Getting Around Canoas
Canoas sits in the Greater Porto Alegre area of Rio Grande do Sul and is the largest municipality in the Porto Alegre metropolitan region. For a visitor, the city is compact enough to navigate with a mix of rail, bus, taxi and ride-hailing, and its position next to Porto Alegre's airport makes it unusually easy to reach by train.
Rail: TRENSURB
The backbone of public transport in Canoas is the commuter rail system known locally as TRENSURB. It is the simplest way to move between Canoas and the wider region, and it links the city to Porto Alegre as well as to neighbouring municipalities such as Esteio, Sapucaia do Sul, São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo.
- The line serves multiple stops within Canoas, so you can use it to move around the city itself, not just to leave it.
- It connects directly to Porto Alegre's central bus station (Rodoviária) and to Salgado Filho airport, with a station near each.
- Fares are inexpensive; buy your ticket at the station before boarding.
- Walking between the Rodoviária or the airport and the nearby stations is generally considered safe during daylight hours, but you should avoid doing so at night.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Local bus services cover the city, operated by SOGAL (Sociedade de Ônibus Gaúcha), Canoas's city bus transport provider. Buses are the practical option for reaching parts of Canoas that the rail line does not serve, and for cross-town trips within the municipality. As with the train, pay your fare on boarding and keep small change or a transit card handy.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are a convenient choice for short trips, for late-night travel when you would rather not walk, and for reaching destinations away from the rail and bus corridors. They are also a straightforward option if you are arriving with luggage and do not want to navigate the walk to a station.
Walking
Canoas is a low-lying city, sitting at roughly 8 metres above sea level, and is crossed by the Gravataí and Sinos rivers. Walking works well for short, local errands and for the connections between the rail stations and nearby transport hubs such as the airport and the Porto Alegre Rodoviária. Those specific walks are best done in daylight. For longer journeys across the city, plan on using the train, a bus, or a taxi or ride-hailing service rather than walking.
Getting from the Airport into Canoas
Porto Alegre's Salgado Filho airport is the main gateway for visitors heading to Canoas, and the rail network is the easiest way in.
- Take the TRENSURB train from the station near the airport; it runs to many stops in Canoas and onward to Porto Alegre and other cities in the region.
- The fare is low, and you buy your ticket at the station.
- The walk from the airport to its station is generally fine during the day; if you arrive after dark, consider a taxi or ride-hailing service instead.
- If you are coming from Porto Alegre's central bus station, the same rail line has a station nearby, so you can connect from long-distance buses onto the train toward Canoas.
Practical Tips
- Treat TRENSURB as your default for airport transfers and for trips into Porto Alegre and neighbouring cities.
- Use local SOGAL buses for destinations within Canoas that lie off the rail line.
- Keep taxi and ride-hailing as a backup for nights, heavy luggage, or places the train and buses do not reach.
- Plan daytime walks around stations and transport hubs; arrange a vehicle after dark.
