Orientation
Bragança is a compact city, and the practical reality for most visitors is that you can cover the centre on foot, with taxis and a local bus system filling in the gaps. There is no rail-based option to rely on, so plan your movements around walking, buses, and road transport.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Bragança has no train service. Rail connections to the city ended in 1991 and have not been restored, so you should not expect to arrive or move around by train. There is likewise no metro or tram network in the city.
One useful legacy of the old railway is that the city's bus station now occupies the disused railway station building, so the historic station site is still the place you go for intercity coaches.
Walking
Walking is the easiest way to get around Bragança for most visitors. The one caveat is the short but steep hill up to the Cidadela, the historic citadel area. If that climb looks daunting, you can simply take a taxi up instead and walk back down at your leisure.
Local Buses and Public Transport
The city has a local bus system, which is the main public transport option within Bragança. It is a useful fallback for reaching parts of town beyond a comfortable walk, though for most central movements walking remains simpler.
Intercity Buses
Long-distance coaches are the primary way to reach Bragança from elsewhere in Portugal and beyond. The Estação Rodoviária de Bragança (the city bus station) is located on Av. João da Cruz, at the site of the disused railway station, and can be reached by phone on +351 273 300 183.
- Rede Expressos operates buses from Braga, Porto, and other cities.
- Rodonorte provides bus service from many places in Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and Douro Litoral.
- There is also a bus from Zamora in Spain, running twice a week. This service has no web address, so you will need to phone either bus station for details.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a practical option in Bragança, particularly for the climb up to the Cidadela if you would rather not walk it. Beyond that, they are best treated as a convenient supplement to walking and the local bus system rather than a primary way of getting around a city this size.
Getting There by Plane
Bragança is served by the Aeródromo de Bragança (Bragança Airport, IATA code BGC), located in Baçal. The airport can be contacted on +351 273 304 253.
Air service to Bragança is provided by Sevenair, with flights from Cascais (CAT), Portimão (PRM), Vila Real (VRL), and Viseu (VSE). If you are arriving by air, these are the connections that feed into the city's airport.
Practical Summary
- Expect to walk for most trips in the centre; take a taxi for the steep hill to the Cidadela if needed.

- Forget trains, metros, and trams — none serve the city, and rail service ended in 1991.
- Arrive by intercity coach at the bus station on Av. João da Cruz, served by Rede Expressos and Rodonorte, plus a twice-weekly bus from Zamora in Spain (phone for details).
- Arrive by air at Aeródromo de Bragança in Baçal, served by Sevenair from Cascais, Portimão, Vila Real, and Viseu.
