Getting Around Sete Lagoas

Sete Lagoas is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, set about 70 kilometres from the state capital, Belo Horizonte, and linked to it by the BR-040 motorway. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: the downtown core is compact and best explored on foot, local buses cover the main neighbourhoods, and taxis and ride-hailing apps fill in the gaps. There is no practical passenger rail option, so plan your arrival and day-to-day travel around road transport.

On Foot

The Centro (downtown) is compact and walkable, and it makes a sensible base for arranging day trips out to the surrounding caves and lakes. Within the centre and along Avenida Amazonas you will find supermarkets, banking and health clinics, and reliable 4G mobile coverage. English-speaking services are limited, so it helps to have key addresses written down in Portuguese. Carry cash for smaller vendors, who may not accept cards.

Rail, Metro and Trams

There is no regular long-distance intercity passenger rail service to Sete Lagoas, and regional passenger rail in Minas Gerais is very limited. Trains are not a practical way to arrive in the city or to get around once you are there. Plan on road-based transport instead.

Local Buses

The municipal bus network serves the main neighbourhoods and the rodoviária (bus terminal). It is the cheapest option for travellers who have time and light luggage, but it is slow and infrequent outside peak hours. Timetables are best checked at the terminal or locally rather than online. Fares are modest, and you generally pay on board, so keep small notes and coins handy.

Intercity Buses

The Terminal Rodoviário de Sete Lagoas is the central hub for regional connections. From here there are frequent services to Belo Horizonte's own rodoviária and to other cities in Minas Gerais, with the Belo Horizonte run taking roughly under an hour and a half depending on the company and service level. Service classes range from basic to executive, with the executive options offering more legroom and fewer stops. Booking online is recommended for popular times, though ticket offices at the terminal also sell seats. Local buses and vans link the rodoviária to city neighbourhoods, and the intercity services to Belo Horizonte run along the BR-040.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Uber operates in Sete Lagoas, and the 99 app is also available. For short trips within the city these are often the fastest and most convenient option, especially at night or when you are carrying luggage. Local radio taxis are available at stands and at the bus terminal. Surge pricing is possible at peak times and during events, so it can pay to compare options before you confirm a ride.

Car Rental

Renting a car is useful if you want to explore the countryside around Sete Lagoas or visit multiple sites across Minas Gerais. Rates are in the range you would expect for a mid-sized Brazilian city, and having your own vehicle gives you far more flexibility for out-of-town trips than the local bus network allows.

Getting There from the Airport

The nearest major airport is Tancredo Neves–Confins International (CNF), which serves the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area. From CNF you have several options:

Belo Horizonte–Pampulha–Carlos Drummond de Andrade Airport (PLU) is a smaller domestic airport. From there, a taxi or ride-hailing car to Sete Lagoas takes roughly forty to sixty minutes. Taking a public bus into Belo Horizonte and then an onward bus takes significantly longer.
