Getting Around Lavras

Lavras is a mid-sized city in southern Minas Gerais, and getting around it is fairly straightforward for a visitor. The city is compact enough that many trips can be made on foot, while local buses cover the routes that stretch beyond the centre. There is no metro or tram network to rely on today, so buses, taxis, ride-hailing and walking are the practical options.

Rail, Metro and Trams

Lavras has no metro or tram system in operation. Historically, the Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas railway reached the nearby settlement of Ribeirão Vermelho in 1888 and was extended to Lavras in 1895, and a tram system was introduced in 1911, making Lavras one of the few inland Brazilian cities with such infrastructure at the time. That tramway was discontinued in 1967. For a visitor today, these are historical notes rather than transport options: plan on buses, taxis or walking instead.

Buses and Public Transport

Local city buses are the main form of public transport. The most useful tool for a visitor is the Viação Real Lavras mobile app, which provides real-time public transportation information for the city. Through the app you can:

The app supports TalkBack accessibility features, including arrival predictions at nearby stops, timetables, and step-by-step directions to destinations. It requires Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later; on earlier versions you would need to use the internet browser instead. Because the app shows ticket purchase points, you can buy what you need for your journey through those locations rather than relying on a single central ticket office.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing services are an option for getting around Lavras, and they are particularly handy for trips where a bus route does not line up with your plans. For longer journeys, ride-sharing is also used to reach the city from elsewhere: Blablacar rides between Belo Horizonte and Lavras were available for around R$55 (Dec 2021), which makes shared rides a practical alternative to a private taxi for the intercity leg.

Walking

Lavras is a walkable city for many everyday trips. The centre and its surrounding streets are compact, and the Viação Real Lavras app's trip planner includes walking as part of a journey, so you can combine on-foot segments with bus rides. Walking is a sensible default for short hops, with buses filling in for longer distances.

Getting There from Belo Horizonte

Lavras is connected by highway to the state capital, Belo Horizonte (237 km), as well as to São Paulo (379 km) and Rio de Janeiro (423 km). The most direct public transport option from Belo Horizonte is the intercity bus: Expresso Gardenia lets you join the ride for R$95 (Dec 2021), and Buser for R$60 (Dec 2021). Blablacar rides are around R$55 (Dec 2021). These prices are from December 2021 and should be treated as a rough guide rather than current fares.

Arriving by Air

The source material does not describe a commercial airport serving Lavras with scheduled passenger flights, so there is no airport-to-city transfer to set out here. Lavras did have an airline operating from 1947 to 1960, and a highway link to the Rodovia Fernão Dias opened in 1962, which is how the city connects to the wider road network today. In practice, visitors arriving by air would come through a larger regional or state gateway and continue to Lavras by intercity bus or shared ride; the Belo Horizonte services described above are the concrete example available.
