Getting Around Guarapari
Guarapari is a coastal resort town in Espírito Santo, part of Greater Vitória, and its layout is shaped by the shoreline: a heavily built-up coast of white sand beaches backed by commercial development, stretching south toward Nova Guarapari and Meaípe. Because the town caters heavily to seasonal tourists, the practical rhythm of getting around changes with the season — during peak periods you will find more frequent service and more traffic, while outside those periods things are quieter.
Rail, Metro and Trams
There is no rail, metro, or tram network serving Guarapari. Visitors should plan on road-based transport — buses, taxis, or a car — for all local and regional travel.
Local Buses
Buses are the mainstay of public transport in Guarapari. Many local buses run throughout the night, which makes them a usable option even for late evenings out. Fares are inexpensive, and you pay on board.
- Local routes: Frequent local buses connect the intercity bus station with downtown, and the trip is only slightly slower than taking a taxi.
- Coastal route to Vitória: The company Alvorada runs hourly buses (more frequent during peak hours) to Vitória via Vila Velha along the coastal route, with service running until 21:00. You do not need to go to the main bus station to catch these.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis in Guarapari do not have meters. Instead, there should be a table available showing fixed prices between different neighbourhoods, so it is worth asking to see it or confirming the fare before you set off. Taxis can be scarce in some areas — Praia do Morro, for instance, has few of them — so it is wise not to rely on hailing one at random in quieter neighbourhoods.
Walking
Guarapari's tourist core is a built-up coastal strip, with beaches backed by commercial development, which makes walking a reasonable way to move between the beach, shops, and nearby restaurants if you are staying close to the shore. Beyond that strip, the town spreads out, and the intercity bus station in particular sits well outside the centre, so walking is not a practical way to cover the whole municipality.
Getting There from the Airport
Guarapari itself has a small domestic airport with no regular passenger traffic, so virtually all visitors arrive through Vitória.
- Vitória Airport (VIX): Also known as Eurico Salles Airport, this is the closest airport to Guarapari. It receives daily flights from most state capitals in the country. Main airlines serving it include LATAM and Gol, along with smaller carriers such as Azul, TEAM, and TRIP.
- Direct bus: Alvorada runs two daily direct buses between the airport and Guarapari. The journey takes about 1.5 hours. Departures from the airport are at 09:30 and 16:30; departures from Guarapari are at 08:10 and 14:50.
- Bus via Vila Velha: Alternatively, take an Alvorada bus to Vila Velha, get off near Terminal Vila Velha, and pick up a local bus to the airport. Total travel time is about 2 hours.
- Taxi: A taxi to or from Vitória Airport is the most direct option if you would rather not wait for a scheduled departure.
- Car rental: Rental companies including Hertz and Localiza have desks at Vitória Airport. From there you can drive south along Rodovia do Sol, the coastal highway.
Arriving by Long-Distance Bus
Guarapari's intercity bus station is new and notably modern and shopping-mall-like, but it sits some distance out of town on the main highway, BR-101, which makes it somewhat inconvenient as an arrival point. If your itinerary allows, consider long-distance buses to Vila Velha instead.
- Main long-distance lines: Vitória (some services via Vila Velha), Rio de Janeiro (three times daily, roughly eight hours, via Campos and Niterói, operated by Kaissara), and Belo Horizonte.
- From the station to downtown: Frequent local buses run straight to downtown, only slightly slower than a taxi, which charges a fixed price for the trip.
Arriving by Car
Guarapari sits on the coast south of Vitória on highway 60, officially nicknamed Rodovia do Sol, with easy access also from BR-101. If you are driving down from the capital, Rodovia do Sol is the scenic coastal approach.
