Getting Around Juazeiro do Norte
Juazeiro do Norte is a city in the state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, located in the semiarid sertão far south of the state capital, Fortaleza. It is best known as the base of Padre Cícero, the charismatic priest and politician, and every November it draws thousands of pilgrims for a celebration in his honour. For a visitor, the city is compact enough that a mix of walking, buses, taxis and ride-hailing will cover almost everything, with a commuter rail link offering an easy side trip to neighbouring Crato.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Juazeiro do Norte has a commuter rail line rather than a full urban metro system. Known as the Cariri Metro, it connects Juazeiro do Norte with the nearby city of Crato and opened in 2009–2010. For a visitor, this is the most straightforward way to travel between the two cities without a car, and it is a practical option if you are staying in Juazeiro do Norte but want to spend time in Crato.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses are the main form of public transport within the city. A great number of buses pass by the western corner of Praça Padre Cícero, particularly at the terminal-like structure there. That square, at the heart of the city and its pilgrimage life, is therefore the most useful landmark for a visitor trying to catch a bus: head for the western corner and you will find both the stops and the informal terminal where routes converge.

Taxis are readily available and are a convenient option for short trips, such as between the bus station and the centre. Walking
The centre of Juazeiro do Norte is walkable, with the area around Praça Padre Cícero serving as the natural focal point for visitors. Many of the places a traveller is likely to want to see cluster around this central square, so on foot is often the simplest way to get between them. Outside the centre, distances grow and you will want a bus, taxi or ride-hailing car.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Juazeiro do Norte is served by Orlando Bezerra de Menezes Airport. The airport handles daily flights to Fortaleza, Petrolina, Recife, Brasília and São Paulo, operated by Gol. On arrival, taxis and ride-hailing are the most direct way into the centre; the same options apply in reverse when you leave. If you are continuing onward by long-distance bus, note that the bus station sits a few kilometres from the centre, and a taxi between the two costs around R$ 10.
Arriving by Long-Distance Bus
If you reach Juazeiro do Norte overland, you will arrive at the bus station, which is a few kilometres from the centre. Guanabara operates most departures from here. From the bus station you can take a taxi into the centre for around R$ 10, or arrange a ride-hailing pickup.
- Fortaleza: roughly a six-hour journey by bus.
- Crateús: served by TransCeará/Pernambucana, with three daily departures taking around seven to eight hours.
- João Pessoa: served by Guanabara, an overnight-length trip of about eleven hours, via Sousa, Patos and Campina Grande.

- Anchor yourself near Praça Padre Cícero: it is the hub for city buses and the most walkable part of town.
- Keep small change handy for bus fares and short taxi hops.
- Use the Cariri Metro for the trip to Crato rather than negotiating a road journey.
- If you are flying out, confirm your flight to Fortaleza, Petrolina, Recife, Brasília or São Paulo in advance, as these are the routes served from the local airport.
