Navigating Chattogram as a visitor offers a variety of transportation options ranging from local public transit to private hired vehicles. Because traffic in the city can be heavily congested, it is advisable to plan your routes in advance and negotiate fares before beginning any journey.
Getting from Shah Amanat International Airport
The city is served by Shah Amanat International Airport, which handles both domestic and international flights. To reach your destination from the airport, you have three primary options:
- Taxis: These are available for direct transport to your location, with costs typically ranging between Tk 200 and Tk 500 depending on the distance.
- Autos (CNG): These three-wheeled vehicles offer a more economical alternative to taxis, usually costing between Tk 100 and Tk 250.
- Buses: This is the most budget-friendly option, with fares ranging from Tk 5 to Tk 30. Buses depart frequently, though intervals can vary significantly.
Rail and Road Networks
The city serves as a major hub for both rail and road transport in Bangladesh.
- Trains: The Chittagong Railway Station is the eastern terminus of the railway system. Trains connect the city to other major hubs like Dhaka, Sylhet, and Mymensingh. Because trains are popular and generally cheaper than bus travel, it is recommended to book your tickets in advance through a travel agency or at the station.
- Buses: A wide network of buses connects Chattogram to other cities. Major private companies such as Greenline, Silkline, and Shohag offer comfortable services to Dhaka and Cox's Bazar. For regional travel, local buses provide frequent service to nearby destinations like Cox's Bazar. The city also serves as the eastern terminus of the Grand Trunk Road.
Local Transit: Taxis, Autos, and Rickshaws
For moving around within the city limits, several modes of transport are available depending on your preference for comfort and distance.
- Taxis: There are two main types of taxis. Black taxis are generally older models without air conditioning, while yellow taxis offer better comfort and include air conditioning. Ride-hailing services like Uber are also available in the city.
- Auto Rickshaws (CNG): These are three-wheeled, partially enclosed vehicles that run on CNG gas. They are useful for shorter trips and are easily recognizable by their green livery.
- Rickshaws: These are pedal-powered, three-wheeled cycles. They are ideal for short distances or navigating areas where larger vehicles might struggle. Because they do not use meters, you should always agree on a price before getting on; a typical fare for a few kilometers is between Tk 20 and Tk 100.
Walking and Cycling
While some areas are navigable on foot, the city's environment requires caution.
- Walking: Walking is feasible in certain areas, such as along the "Strip" where hotels are clustered together. However, be mindful that streets near Station Road and Jubilee Road can be very busy.
- Bicycling: While many locals use bicycles to navigate through heavy traffic, it is not recommended for tourists due to poor road conditions and a high risk of accidents in congested areas.
