Getting Around Chandpur

Chandpur is a river port city in Bangladesh, and the way visitors move around it is shaped by the water and the rail line that meet there. The practical picture is simple: you arrive by bus, train, or boat, and once you are in town you explore on foot and by local transport, using the launch terminal and the rail line as your main landmarks.

Arriving by Bus

Several bus services connect Chandpur with the rest of the country. From Dhaka, buses leave from the Saydabad bus stand, which lies south of Dhaka Airport, and run to the Chandpur bus terminal. Padma Express is one of the operators serving this route. Buses also come to Chandpur from Chittagong, Sylhet, Laksmipur, and Comilla, and they return after a short stop.

Arriving by Train

Chandpur is on the railway network, but reaching it from Dhaka and other districts means travelling via Laksam junction, where you change trains. Direct services run to and from Chittagong: the Meghna Express departs Chittagong in the late afternoon and arrives in Chandpur in the evening, returning the next morning; the Sagorika Express also runs between Chittagong and Chandpur, leaving Chittagong in the morning and heading back in the early afternoon. If you are coming from elsewhere in the country, plan on connecting through Laksam.

Arriving by Boat

For many visitors the launch, the local word for ferry, is the most enjoyable way to reach Chandpur. Boats run from the Dhaka Sadarghat boat terminal from early morning until midnight, and the crossing takes a few hours. Services also connect Chandpur with Barisal. On board you can choose from a range of seating, including single and double cabins, Shoukhin class, and first-class air-conditioned seats.

Getting Around the City

Once you are in Chandpur, the city is best explored on foot and with the local transport that clusters around the bus terminal, the launch ghat, and the rail line. The rail line itself is a useful orientation point: as you enter Chandpur along it you pass a lake and the Angikar liberation monument. Arriving by road, you will notice Sapla Chattar near Kali Bari Rail Station and Hilsa Chattar on stadium road.

A highlight of any visit is the "thota", a strip of land that appears like an island when you approach by water from Dhaka or Barisal. You can visit it right after arriving in Chandpur, and the train also stops there. From the thota you can take in the Dakatia river, the fishermen and the hilsa trade, and country roads running off in different directions. It is a popular picnic spot and a fine place to watch the sunset.
