Getting Around Pabna

Pabna sits on the north bank of the Padma river in the Rajshahi Division and serves as the headquarters of both Pabna District and Pabna Sadar Upazila. For a visitor, the city is compact enough that a mix of walking, cycle rickshaws, and auto-rickshaws will cover most day-to-day needs, while buses, trains, and boats handle the longer legs in and out of town.

Local Transport Within the City

Pabna's public transport mix is made up of buses, auto-rickshaws (CNGs), cycle rickshaws, and boats. Each suits a different kind of trip.

In the wider Pabna district, you may also come across rides by Nosimon, rickshaw-van, and Korimon.

Rail

Pabna is connected to a newer railway network. Pabna Railway Station is in Shalgaria, near the Pabna Central Bus Terminal. A nearby railway station at Tebunia lies outside the city center.

Reaching Pabna by train from Dhaka is straightforward: go first to Kamlapur rail station in Dhaka and buy a ticket there for the Dhaka–Pabna route.

Buses and Long-Distance Connections

Several Dhaka-bound private bus services operate from Pabna, including Pabna Express, Shyamoli, Sarkar Travels, Raja Badsha, Badol, Mohanagar, C-line, Arif, Ishurdi Express, Night Star, Kings, Esha, Capital Service, Al-Hamra, and Silver Line. The government-owned Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) provides bus services to Rajshahi and Bogra.

By road, Dhaka is roughly five hours away via the Jamuna Bridge, which also links Pabna to cities and towns in Dhaka Division, Chittagong Division, and Sylhet Division. Kushtia District and other parts of Khulna Division and Barisal Division are connected via the Lalon Shah Bridge. Bus tickets from Dhaka to Pabna, routed via Aricha, are inexpensive.

Waterways

Water transport matters in Pabna because the Padma and other rivers, along with the Chalan Beel wetland, are part of everyday geography.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material does not describe a taxi or ride-hailing network in Pabna. In practice, the motorised options available to visitors are the CNG auto-rickshaws and the local bus services, with cycle rickshaws covering the shortest trips. For anything beyond these, arrange transport through your hotel or a local contact.

Walkability

A car is not necessary for daily life in Pabna; walking combined with public transport is a viable way to get around. A car does offer more flexibility if you expect to travel frequently or late at night. The old, narrow, and congested parts of the city are best explored on foot or by cycle rickshaw.

Getting There from the Airport

Ishwardi Airport serves Pabna City, but it is non-operational due to lack of passenger demand. Biman Bangladesh Airlines once operated twice-weekly services to Ishwardi from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, but no airlines currently operate to or from Ishwardi.

The nearest operational airport is Shah Makhdum Airport (Rajshahi Airport), which is more than 90 km from the city centre. From there, you would continue to Pabna by road or rail. Alternatively, fly into Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and travel onward to Pabna by train from Kamlapur rail station or by one of the many Dhaka-bound private bus services that run the route.
