Getting Around Yevlakh
Yevlakh is a compact city in central Azerbaijan, and its layout makes it relatively easy for a visitor to find their bearings. The city is built around a long central avenue and a large square, with parks and public buildings clustered nearby. Because the city is small and its main sights and services sit close together, most visitors will find that a mix of walking and short taxi rides covers almost everything they need.
Walking
Walking is the simplest way to get around central Yevlakh. The city's core is organised around Heydar Aliyev Square, the largest square in the city, and the surrounding streets and avenues, including the long Nizami Avenue. Several green spaces are within easy reach of the centre, among them Heydar Aliyev Alley and the Dede Gorgud, Samad Vurgun, Nizami, Friendship and Independence parks. If you are staying or spending time in the centre, you can reasonably expect to reach these on foot.
For anything beyond the central area, be prepared to use a vehicle, as the city spreads out along its main avenue and side streets.
Rail
Yevlakh's Central Railway Station is the city's main rail hub and the terminus for national and international rail links serving the city. Yevlakh sits on one of Azerbaijan's primary east–west rail lines, which connects the capital, Baku, with the rest of the country. This makes the train a practical option for arriving in or leaving Yevlakh, and it also links the city into the wider regional network.
The Kars–Tbilisi–Baku railway runs along the line through the city and connects Yevlakh with Tbilisi in Georgia; from there, trains continue onward to Akhalkalaki and Kars in Turkey. In other words, Yevlakh's station is not just a local stop but a point on an international corridor. If you plan to travel by rail, the station is the place to start, and it is worth checking schedules in advance since long-distance services are less frequent than local ones.
Metro and Trams
Yevlakh has no metro or tram network. Visitors should not expect urban rail of this kind; the city's rail provision is the mainline station described above, not a local metro or tram system.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Public transport in Yevlakh is centred on buses. The city's airport is connected by bus to the city centre, which gives arriving passengers a public transport option for the final leg of their journey. Beyond that, buses serve as the general means of moving around by public transport.
As with many smaller cities, services may be less frequent outside peak hours, so it is sensible to allow extra time if you are relying on a bus to reach a specific appointment or connection.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a convenient way to cover short distances around Yevlakh, particularly if you are carrying luggage or heading somewhere outside the central walking area. For a city of this size, a taxi is often the quickest door-to-door option. Ride-hailing apps may have limited coverage in a city of this scale, so it is worth confirming locally what is available, or simply asking your hotel or guesthouse to arrange a car.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Yevlakh Airport (IATA code YLV) is the only airport in the city. The most straightforward way into town is by bus: the airport is connected by bus to the city centre. This is the public transport option for the airport run and is the simplest choice if you are travelling light and want to avoid arranging a private car.
If you prefer a more direct journey, a taxi from the airport to the centre is a practical alternative, especially if you are arriving with luggage or at an hour when bus services are sparse. Because the airport sits close to the city, the transfer itself is short.
Practical Tips
- Base yourself near the centre if you want to walk to the main square, avenue and parks.
- Use the Central Railway Station for national and international train connections, including services toward Baku and, via the Kars–Tbilisi–Baku line, toward Georgia and Turkey.
- Rely on buses for public transport, including the airport-to-centre connection.
- Take a taxi for short hops outside the walkable core or when carrying luggage.
- Do not expect a metro or tram system; Yevlakh does not have one.
