Getting Around Elbasan
Elbasan is a compact city in central Albania, and most of what a visitor wants to see sits close to the centre. That makes getting around fairly simple: you can cover the main sights on foot, and fall back on buses, minibuses or taxis for anything further out. There is no metro or tram network in the city, and no urban rail service for moving around town.
On Foot
Walking is the most practical way to see Elbasan. All the main places of interest are near the city centre, so you can simply stroll between them. The centre is pedestrian-friendly, with maintained sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, and most everyday amenities are close together.
- Expect the centre to be easy and pleasant to walk.
- Take extra care at night in quieter, less crowded areas.
Buses and Minibuses
Buses are the primary form of public transport in Elbasan. They run on regular schedules covering most of the city, and fares are low. Routes are generally well-marked, with timetables and route maps posted at most stops. Buses can get crowded at peak hours.
Alongside the buses are minibuses known locally as furgons. These are smaller and faster, suited to short trips within the city, and they run frequently. They have no fixed schedule and depart when full, and their fares are slightly higher than bus fares.
For specific journeys, a few useful boarding points stand out:
- St. Bashkia stop: the place to catch the bus to the thermal baths (Llixhat), east of Elbasan Central Palace. The ticket is 50 lek for the roughly 12 km trip.
- Tiranë–Elbasan service, Lagjja "Aqif Pasha": runs from 06:00 to 20:00, with the trip to the capital taking about 45 minutes. The fare is 200 lek.
- Tregu i Rrobave terminal: near the clothes market on the way to the Cërrik intersection, this is a key hub in southern Elbasan for local routes into the city and surrounding villages, as well as intercity travel to other regional destinations.
Between buses, furgons and taxis, it is possible to live in Elbasan without a car.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available and are metered, with reasonable fares. In the centre, you will find them close to the main square. They are the sensible choice when you are carrying luggage, are in a hurry, or are travelling at night when buses and furgons are not running.
Arriving from the Airport
Tirana International Airport is the main gateway for reaching Elbasan, and the airport lies some distance from the city. The straightforward option is to take a taxi from the airport directly to Elbasan. If you are coming from Tirana itself rather than the airport, buses to Elbasan leave from the terminal in front of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tirana, in the "Qyteti Studenti" area on "Arben Broci" street; the ride takes about 45 minutes along the motorway toward Elbasan.
Practical Summary
- Best for sightseeing: walking — the main sights cluster around the centre.
- Cheapest for longer hops: buses, with furgons as a faster, slightly pricier alternative.
- Best for luggage, urgency or late nights: metered taxis, found near the main square.
- From the airport: take a taxi; from Tirana city, catch the bus at the Qyteti Studenti terminal.
