Getting Around Kandahar
Kandahar is a large, spread-out city in southern Afghanistan, and getting around it is a practical matter rather than a sightseeing one. The city has no metro, tram, or urban rail network, so visitors rely on road transport: taxis, rented vehicles with drivers, and intercity buses for journeys beyond the city. The guidance below covers the options you can actually use, and how they connect.
Rail, Metro and Trams
There is no metro, tram, or passenger rail network in Kandahar. No such system is described for the city, so you should not plan on using rail-based transport to move around or to reach Kandahar. All practical movement within and into the city happens by road or by air.
Taxis and Rented Vehicles
Taxis are the main way visitors get around Kandahar. The standard arrangement is to hire a vehicle together with a reliable driver, which is the usual and most straightforward option for a visitor. If you prefer to drive yourself, special arrangements can be made to rent a vehicle without a driver, but the basic requirement for such a rental is that the vehicle must be insured. In practice, most visitors will find that taking a taxi or hiring a car with a driver is simpler and more predictable than self-driving.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Kandahar does not have a city bus network aimed at visitors moving around within the city. The bus service that exists is intercity: there is a large national bus station known as "Kabul Adda" (meaning Kabul Junction), located a block north of Durahi Circle in the Aino Mina section of the city. From this station, buses run to Kabul, Lashkar Gah, Zaranj, Herat, and Spin Boldak. Smaller vehicles are also available at the same station to take passengers to other destinations within the province and beyond. If your trip involves leaving Kandahar by road, this is the place to arrange it.
Walkability
Kandahar is not a city that lends itself to getting around on foot for most visitor journeys. It is a substantial city spread across a wide area, with its districts, bazaars, business centres, hotels, and other facilities distributed across the municipality. Walking may be practical for short hops within a single neighbourhood or bazaar area, but for covering distance between parts of the city, a taxi or a hired vehicle is the realistic choice.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Kandahar International Airport (KDH) is the city's air gateway. It has flights on Ariana Afghan Airlines and Kam Air connecting Kandahar with Dubai, as well as domestic flights between Kabul and Kandahar and a domestic service linking Kandahar, Herat, and Kandahar. Flights operated by the UN and ICRC also use the airport, but those are open only to UN staff and other approved organisations, so they are not an option for ordinary visitors.
To get from the airport into the city, the practical approach is the same as getting around once you are there: arrange a taxi or a hired vehicle with a driver. Since there is no metro, tram, or city bus network to fall back on, it is worth sorting out your transfer in advance rather than assuming you can simply walk out and find public transport.
Arriving by Road
If you are reaching Kandahar overland rather than by air, the main highway, the A01, links Kandahar with Kabul and is one of the busiest roads in Afghanistan. The drive between the two cities takes roughly six hours. A highway also runs from Kandahar towards Herat, and another, the A75, runs southeast towards Spin Boldak, the last town in Afghanistan before the start of a Pakistani highway. Highways in Afghanistan can be dangerous at times because of militant activity, though militants do not necessarily target tourists. If you travel by road, the national bus station at Kabul Adda in Aino Mina is the departure point for buses to Kabul, Lashkar Gah, Zaranj, Herat, and Spin Boldak, and smaller vehicles there serve other destinations in the province and beyond.
