Overview
Kuala Lumpur's public transport system is a network of rail lines, buses, and other services operated by multiple authorities. As a visitor, you will use four main types of rail transport: the LRT (Light Rapid Transit), MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), Monorail, and KTM Komuter commuter trains, plus buses operated by Rapid KL. Most city journeys use the integrated Rapid KL system (LRT, MRT, and Monorail), which share a common ticketing platform. The system operates from approximately 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM daily. You can buy a single-journey token at vending machines or use a reloadable Touch 'n Go card, which offers discounted fares.
The network
Light Rapid Transit (LRT)
The LRT comprises three lines that are fully grade-separated and operate as part of the Rapid KL system:
- Kelana Jaya Line: Covers 46.4 km and links the city centre with Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, and Gombak. It carries over 250,000 passengers daily and includes an underground section between Pasar Seni and Damai with five stations.
- Ampang Line and Sri Petaling Line: These two lines share a common section from Sentul Timur to Chan Sow Lin, then split to their respective termini. Together they cover 45.1 km and carry over 200,000 passengers on weekdays. Unlike other rapid transit lines, they run completely above ground. The Sri Petaling Line extends south through Puchong to Putra Heights; the Ampang Line serves eastern Kuala Lumpur and Ampang.
- Shah Alam Line: The newest LRT line, covering 37.8 km and connecting Bandar Utama and western Petaling Jaya with Klang via Shah Alam. It interchanges with the Kelana Jaya Line and Kajang Line, allowing travel to western Selangor.
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)
Two fully automated driverless MRT lines operate as part of Rapid KL:
- Kajang Line (Sungai Buloh–Kajang or SBK Line): Runs 47 km from Kwasa Damansara to Kajang with 29 stations, passing through the city centre and areas including Damansara, Cheras, and Kajang. It is the second-longest fully automated driverless metro system in Malaysia.
- Putrajaya Line: At 57.7 km with 36 stations, it is currently Malaysia's longest fully automated driverless metro system. It runs from Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral, serving Sungai Buloh, Kepong, the city centre, Seri Kembangan, and Cyberjaya.
A third line, the Circle Line, has been approved and is expected to form a loop line connecting Bukit Kiara to the University of Malaya.
Monorail (KL Monorail)
A single elevated monorail line with 11 stations operates through the city centre, including Brickfields, Bukit Bintang, and Chow Kit, starting from KL Sentral. It operates as part of the Rapid KL integrated system and runs at frequencies of 5–15 minutes. Fares range from 1.3 ringgit depending on distance.
Commuter Rail (KTM Komuter)
Operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), commuter trains serve the outer fringes of the Klang Valley. Three main lines operate:
- Batu Caves–Pulau Sebang Line: Connects the city centre to Batu Caves and extends south as far as Pulau Sebang in Malacca.
- Tanjung Malim–Port Klang Line: A historic line dating from 1886 that extends north to Tanjung Malim in Perak and south to Port Klang, serving Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, and Klang.
- KL Sentral–Terminal Skypark Line: Connects to the city's major transport hub and skypark terminal.
All three lines converge at KL Sentral, Malaysia's largest railway station and intermodal transport hub. KTM Komuter trains operate from 5:35 AM to 10:35 PM with frequencies of approximately 30 minutes, and include women-only pink cars. Fares start from 2.6 ringgit.
Airport Rail Links
Two dedicated rail services connect Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA):
- KLIA Ekspres: A non-stop service running in 28–33 minutes between KLIA and KL Sentral, operating every 15–30 minutes from 5:00 AM to midnight. The fare is 55 ringgit for adults and 25 ringgit for children.
- KLIA Transit: Makes three stops en route to KL Sentral, taking approximately 35 minutes and operating every 30 minutes. The fare is also 55 ringgit for adults and 25 ringgit for children.
A third rail link serves Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport).
Buses
Rapid KL operates bus services throughout the Klang Valley, with fares ranging from 1 to 5 ringgit depending on distance. Operating hours are generally 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, varying by route. The GoKL City Bus service provides free rides on colour-coded routes (Purple, Green, Red, Blue) serving major areas including KLCC, Bukit Bintang, KL Tower, and Chow Kit, with frequencies of every 5–15 minutes.

Payment Methods
The Rapid KL system (LRT, MRT, Monorail, and buses) accepts two main payment methods:
- Single-journey tokens: Plastic tokens purchased from vending machines at stations. You specify your destination and the machine dispenses the appropriate token. Vending machines accept both cash bills and coins.
- Touch 'n Go card: A reloadable smartcard with a 10 ringgit non-refundable deposit. You can top up at vending machines, ticket offices, and supermarkets. The card is accepted across the entire Rapid KL system (LRT, MRT, Monorail, and buses) and offers discounted fares compared to single tokens.
KTM Komuter and airport rail services (KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit) use separate payment systems. KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit accept card and e-wallet payments only, not cash. KTM Komuter tickets are paper QR-code tickets purchased at station counters or online.
Fares
Rapid KL fares for LRT, MRT, and Monorail start from 1.3 ringgit per trip and vary by distance, with typical journeys in the city centre costing between 1.3 and 3 ringgit. KTM Komuter fares start from 2.6 ringgit (for example, KL Sentral to Batu Caves). Monorail fares range from 1.20 to 4.10 ringgit depending on distance. Bus fares range from 1 to 5 ringgit depending on distance. GoKL City Bus is free. These are approximate fares subject to change.
Tourist Passes
The KL TravelPass is designed for visitors and includes a single or return KLIA Ekspres ticket plus 2 days of unlimited rides on Rapid KL services (BRT, LRT, MRT, Monorail, and buses). The pass comes with a 5 ringgit preloaded balance on a Touch 'n Go card platform. The 2-day unlimited rides are valid for two consecutive calendar days (not a 48-hour rolling period), beginning from your first use. The KLIA Ekspres ticket portion is valid for one month from purchase, and first use of the unlimited rides must occur within that month. You can purchase the KL TravelPass at KLIA Terminal 1 (Platform Level 1) and KLIA Terminal 2 (gateway@klia2, Level 2), at KL Sentral's KLIA Ekspres Departure Hall (Level 1), or online via the KLIAekspres.com website and mobile app. The card is valid for 10 years; the 5 ringgit cash balance is refundable, but the unlimited ride portion is non-refundable.
Operating Hours and Frequency
The LRT, MRT, and Monorail operate from approximately 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM daily, with variations of up to 15 minutes by line. During peak hours (7–9 AM and 5–7:30 PM), frequencies are every 2–10 minutes depending on the line. During off-peak hours, frequencies are typically 10–15 minutes. KTM Komuter operates from 5:35 AM to 10:35 PM with 30-minute frequencies.
From the airport
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
KLIA is located 50 km south of Kuala Lumpur in the Sepang district of Selangor. The airport has two terminals: the main KLIA terminal for Malaysia Airlines and other mainline carriers, and KLIA2 for Air Asia and other low-cost carriers. The two terminals are connected by a 3-minute train ride.
The fastest and most direct option into the city centre is the KLIA Ekspres, a non-stop train service taking 28–33 minutes to reach KL Sentral. Trains depart every 15–30 minutes from 5:00 AM to midnight. The fare is 55 ringgit for adults and 25 ringgit for children.
The KLIA Transit is an alternative that makes three intermediate stops en route to KL Sentral, taking approximately 35 minutes and operating every 30 minutes. The fare is also 55 ringgit for adults and 25 ringgit for children. KLIA Transit is the only service accepting UnionPay cards among airport rail options.
Both services arrive at KL Sentral, Malaysia's largest railway station and intermodal transport hub in Brickfields, just south of the city centre. From KL Sentral, you can connect to all LRT, MRT, Monorail, and commuter rail lines to reach your destination within the city.
Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport)
Subang Airport is much closer to the city centre (25 km away) and less crowded than KLIA. The most convenient way to reach the city is by taxi. Alternatively, you can take Rapid KL bus 772 (destination: Subang Suria/Mah Sing) from Terminal Jalan Sultan Mohammad next to Pasar Seni LRT station. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes in clear traffic but can extend to nearly 1 hour 30 minutes during peak rush hour.
Etiquette & customs
- Queuing: Queue orderly at station gates and when boarding vehicles. Allow passengers to exit before you board.
- Escalator etiquette: While specific standing sides are not documented for Kuala Lumpur, the general convention in most Asian cities is to keep to one side to allow others to walk past; observe local behaviour and follow suit.
- Priority seating: Seats marked or designated for elderly passengers, pregnant women, and those with disabilities should be vacated if occupied by able-bodied passengers who see these groups boarding.
- Eating and drinking: Eating and drinking on trains and buses is generally discouraged or prohibited; follow signage on individual vehicles and respect the cleanliness of the transport system.
- Rush-hour behaviour: Peak hours (7–9 AM and 5–7:30 PM) can be very crowded. Be patient, keep your belongings secure, and move into the carriage to make room for others boarding.
- Women-only cars: KTM Komuter trains include designated women-only pink cars; men should not board these cars during designated hours.
- Quiet zones: Maintain a quiet demeanour on trains; loud conversations and phone calls are considered impolite.
