Overview
The Naples Metro (Italian: Metropolitana di Napoli) is a rapid transit system serving the city of Naples and parts of its metropolitan area. As one of the largest underground networks in Italy, it provides a convenient way to navigate the urban core. To ride the system, you will purchase a ticket or pass, validate it before boarding, and navigate through various stations that often serve as hubs for other regional transport links.
The network
The metro infrastructure is divided among different operators and includes several distinct lines:
- Line 1 (yellow): Operated by ANM, this line is part of the "Metrò dell'Arte" (Art Metro) initiative.
- Line 6 (blue): Also operated by ANM, this is a "light metro" line and is also part of the "Metrò dell'Arte."
- Line 11 (rainbow or orange): Operated by EAV, this line serves the metropolitan area.
Beyond the underground metro, the region is served by an extensive railway network:
- Circumvesuviana: A series of six lines providing regional connectivity.
- Line 2: An urban railway service that shares some platforms with Metro Line 1.

Tickets & fares
To use the metro for a single trip, you can purchase an ANM type "B" single journey ticket, which is priced at approximately 1.50 euros. For longer stays or more frequent travel, the system offers several other options:
- Passes: Daily and weekly tickets are available for use on the metro network.
- Specialized Passes: Monthly and annual passes are issued by ANM (for Lines 1 and 6) and EAV (for Line 11).
- Integrated Travel: The UnicoCampania system offers integrated tickets and passes for broader regional travel.

From the airport
To reach the city center from Naples International Airport (Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli), you have several options:
- Alibus: A dedicated shuttle with two stops at Stazione Centrale and Piazza Municipio. The ticket costs approximately 5 euros and is valid for further public transport trips for 90 minutes after validation.
- 3S Bus: A more economical alternative to the Alibus that also serves the central station and port areas, though it lacks air conditioning and stops in more local streets.
- Taxi: Authorized taxis offer a fixed fare of approximately 18 EUR from the airport to the central train station (excluding potential motorway fees). Ensure you use an authorized taxi with a visible license and meter.
Etiquette & customs
When navigating Naples by public transport, keep the following local customs in mind:
- Safety: Be vigilant against unauthorized taxis or individuals offering unsolicited help near transit hubs.
- Traffic Rules: While traffic is heavy and construction may cause delays, standard regulations are generally followed; however, it is wise to follow the lead of local drivers when crossing streets.
- Walking: In the historic center, many areas are easily walkable, but be mindful of pedestrians who may cross in the middle of blocks.
