Overview
Kunming Metro is a rapid transit system serving Yunnan Province's capital city. The network currently operates six lines with a total track length of 164.3 kilometers. To ride the metro end to end, you purchase a ticket or pass at one of the bilingual self-service machines in any station, tap your card or QR code at the gate to enter, and insert or tap again at the exit. Trains run from approximately 06:20 to 23:00 daily. The system is modern and air-conditioned, with free clean toilets at stations and reasonably good English signage throughout.
The network
Metro lines
Kunming Metro operates six lines serving the city's key destinations:
- Line 1 (red): 33.3 km with 22 stations, running from South Ring Road to University Town (South) and Kunming South Railway Station. Line 1 is Kunming's main rail link to the developing Chenggong District to the southeast, consisting of an elevated section connecting the city to Chenggong and an underground section below Caiyun Road within Chenggong. A northwest extension is under construction.
- Line 2 (blue): 12.4 km with 14 stations, running from North Coach Station to South Ring Road. It is Kunming's main north-south line, with a short elevated section from North Coach Station to Longtou Street and an underground section beneath Beijing Road. Phase 2 extension towards Haidong Park is under construction.
- Line 3 (magenta): 19.16 km with 20 stations, running from Western Hills Park to East Coach Station. Opened on 29 August 2017, it is Kunming's main east-west line.
- Line 4: A south–north line starting from the new Kunming South Railway Station.
- Line 5: Operational as part of the network.
- Line 6: Connects Kunming Changshui International Airport to the city center, operating from 06:20 to 23:00 daily with trains departing approximately every 10 minutes. This line goes to the East Bus Station, where you can transfer to Line 3, and continues to Tangzixiang, the interchange station for Line 2 in downtown.
Lines 1 and 2 currently have through service, which will be reconfigured when their extensions are completed.
Other transit modes
City buses cost ¥2 per trip and cover most of the city, operating from approximately 06:00 until 21:30–22:00. Buses stop roughly every 500 meters to 1 kilometer along their routes. A bus card reduces the fare to ¥0.90 per trip and costs ¥20. Payment can be made by card, QR code via Alipay or WeChat Pay, or cash (exact fare only, as drivers do not give change).
Airport Express shuttle buses are another option from Kunming Changshui International Airport, with six routes operating from approximately 08:00 to midnight for most popular services. A single ride costs ¥25 and connects to downtown, both railway stations, and outlying bus terminals.
Taxis are metered and regulated; DiDi and Meituan Dache ride-hailing apps are widely available with English-language interfaces.
Tickets & fares
Kunming Metro operates on a distance-based fare system with fares determined by distance traveled in fixed kilometer brackets. Fares range from ¥2 to ¥10 depending on how far you travel. Children under 1.3 meters in height, passengers with disabilities, military personnel, and members of the People's Armed Police travel free. Students receive a 50% discount, and senior citizens aged 60 to 69 receive a 20% discount; those aged 70 and above travel free.
Payment methods
All stations are equipped with self-service ticket vending machines and card recharge facilities that accept cash (¥5, ¥10, ¥20, and ¥50 banknotes), Alipay, WeChat Pay, Visa, and UnionPay. The Kunming Transportation Union Card (Zhihuitong/智慧通) and other China T-Union cards are accepted. The system also supports virtual QR code tickets including WeChat Transit QR Code, Alipay Transit QR Code, and UnionPay Mobile QuickPass, as well as virtual NFC transit cards on mobile wallet platforms such as Xiaomi Wallet and Apple Wallet. Card sales and refunds are handled at customer service counters in stations.
Daily and multi-day passes
Electronic daily passes are available through the Alipay Ride Code mini-program, offering unlimited rides on all metro lines for 24 hours (one-day ticket), 72 hours (three-day ticket), or 168 hours (seven-day ticket). Passes are non-refundable once purchased and take effect immediately. You may exit up to 4 hours after the validity period expires if you have already entered, but cannot re-enter within 10 minutes of exiting.
From the airport
Kunming Changshui International Airport is located approximately 25 kilometers northeast of the city center. The most economical public-transport option is Metro Line 6, which operates from 06:20 to 23:00 daily with trains departing approximately every 10 minutes. A ride to the city center costs ¥6 (as of June 2018). Board at the Airport Center/Kunming Airport station (not Airport Front). Line 6 connects to the East Bus Station, where you can transfer to Line 3, and to Tangzixiang, the interchange station for Line 2 in downtown Kunming.
Airport Express shuttle buses are an alternative, with six routes operating from approximately 08:00 to midnight for most popular services. A single ride costs ¥25 and connects to downtown, the city's two main railway stations, and outlying bus terminals. Shuttle buses depart every 20–30 minutes during daytime and evening hours.
A taxi ride to the city center will take approximately 30–40 minutes under normal conditions; expect this to double during peak traffic times, as Kunming experiences significant congestion. Ride-hailing apps such as DiDi are also available at the airport.
Etiquette & customs
Queue in an orderly fashion when boarding trains and use the designated doors. During rush hours (07:30–09:30 and 17:30–19:30), trains become crowded and seats fill quickly; yield priority seating to elderly passengers, people with disabilities, and pregnant women. Do not eat or drink on the metro (with the exception of water in most systems). Avoid loud phone conversations and keep music at low volume through headphones. On escalators, stand on the right side to allow others to walk past on the left. Observe quiet behavior and do not block doorways. Smoking is strictly prohibited.
