Overview
Qingdao Metro (青岛地铁; Qīngdǎo dìtiě) is the rapid transit system serving Qingdao in Shandong province, China. It opened on 16 December 2015 with the northern section of Line 3, and has grown into a network that now reaches the airport, the old town, the beaches and the West Coast. Trains generally run from approximately 06:00 to 22:30, and announcements are made in both Mandarin and English.
Riding end to end is straightforward. Look for a station entrance within about 500 m — entrances are marked with the metro logo, the line number, the station name and an entrance number. You will pass through a mandatory security check of people and bags before reaching the concourse. Buy or validate your ticket in the non-paid area, then tap a card, scan a QR code or insert a single-ride token at the automatic gates to enter. At your destination, exit through the gates (single-ride tickets are collected, stored-value fares are deducted) and follow the lettered exits (A, B, C, D) to street level. If a gate fails, staff at the station Service Center can help.
The network
The metro is the backbone of visitor travel in Qingdao, supplemented by buses, trolleybuses and a bay ferry. Lines carry colour-coded identities, and two lines were renamed in 2024.
- Line 1 (yellow) — runs north–south for about 60 km, linking Chengyang district with the West Coast (Huangdao District) via a 5.5 km tunnel under Jiaozhou Bay. It connects with Qingdao North Railway Station.
- Line 2 (red) — runs east–west near the south shore before turning north, serving tourist attractions and the Laoshan Jinjialing financial area. It interchanges with Line 3 at May Fourth Square and Licun. A 2024 extension reaches Sichuan Road near the Qingdao Ferry Terminal.
- Line 3 (blue) — the oldest line, running roughly north–south between Qingdao Railway Station (火车站; huǒchē zhàn) and Qingdao North Railway Station (青岛北站; Qīngdǎo Běizhàn), passing May Fourth Square. It can be the noisiest line and is heavily used, so seats are hard to find at peak times.
- Line 4 (green) — runs roughly east–west, connecting the old town (Daxue Road, Xinhao Hill, Guanxiang Hill) with the Laoshan Scenic Area entrance at Dahedong.
- Line 6 (light blue) — runs through Huangdao district, linking old Huangdao with the Lingshan Bay section; it is the only line with driverless capability.
- Line 8 (pink) — links Hongdao and Jiaozhou to Qingdao North Railway Station, and is the line serving Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport.
- Oceantec Valley Line (Line 11) (dark blue) — runs through Laoshan district and the Aoshan section; useful for Laoshan Jiushui Scenic Area.
- West Coast Line (Line 13) (teal) — runs through Huangdao district, linking old Huangdao with Jiaonan; useful for Dazhu Mountain Scenic Area and Langyatai Scenic Spot, and connects Qingdao West Railway Station.
Beyond the metro, the bus and trolleybus network is well put together and useful once you work out the routes. Buses 11, 26, 228 and 501 run from the railway station along the coast via Donghai Xi Lu to the eastern beaches, while buses 316 and 231 connect the station with the town centre. Many major routes have dedicated bus lanes, which can make buses faster than cars at rush hour. For crossing the bay, the Qingdao–Huangdao Ferry (薛家岛轮渡; Xuējiādǎo lúndù) runs from No. 1 Sichuan Road in Shinan District to Huangdao (Xuejiadao), taking about 15–25 minutes and offering a scenic alternative to the tunnel or bridge.
Tickets & fares
Metro fares are distance-based and range from about ¥2 to ¥8. The starting fare is ¥2 for up to 5 km, then ¥3 for 5–10 km, ¥4 for 10–17 km, ¥5 for 17–27 km and ¥6 for 27–38 km, with ¥1 added for each further 20 km above 38 km. These prices are approximate and subject to change.
- Single-ride tickets — buy from Ticket Vending Machines in the station concourse, which have an English interface and accept cash (5- and 10-yuan notes and 1-yuan coins at cash machines) as well as Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay and Digital Yuan by QR code. A single-ride ticket is valid only on the day of purchase and at the station where you bought it, and is collected at the exit gate.
- Day passes — a 1-Day Pass (valid 24 hours) and a 3-Day Pass (valid 72 hours), available in physical and electronic form and activated on first use, give unlimited rides for one person during their validity. Digital versions can be bought in the Qingdao Metro app.
- Qingdao Tong card (Qindaotong) — a rechargeable stored-value card sold at station service counters, select convenience stores and airport kiosks, with a refundable deposit of about ¥20. It works on the metro and citywide buses, and can be topped up at ticket machines or counters.
- Mobile payment — the Alipay QR code can be linked to an international credit card without a Chinese bank account; activate it via the Alipay "Transport" section, search "Qingdao Metro" and complete identity verification. The official Qingdao Metro app also provides a scannable transit QR code, route planning and service updates.
- Other cards — Commemorative Tickets and the UnionPay Interoperability Card are also accepted.
One person needs one ticket — tickets cannot be shared. If your balance is insufficient to cover the minimum fare, entry is blocked; if you have paid too little for your journey, pay the difference at the exit. Unused, readable single-ride tickets and day passes can be refunded, but commemorative tickets cannot. Each ride has a 240-minute time limit, after which the current fare plus the network's highest single-ride fare applies. A lost or damaged ticket means paying the highest single-ride fare at the Service Center. Invoices for single-ride tickets should be requested at the Service Center before exiting.
From the airport
Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (青岛胶东国际机场; IATA: TAO) is the main airport, located about 55–60 km from the city centre. The airport is connected to downtown by Metro Line 8, airport buses and taxis.
- Metro — Line 8 runs from the airport to Qingdao North Railway Station, where you transfer to Line 1 or Line 3 for the downtown area.
- Airport shuttle buses — these serve major hotels and districts, with fares around ¥25–30.
- Taxis and ride-hailing — taxis to May Fourth Square take about 50–60 minutes and cost roughly ¥120–150; some sources quote 1–1.5 hours and ¥200–250, so allow for variation. Ride-hailing apps such as Didi are widely used, with pickup at the Ground Transportation Center.
Etiquette & customs
- Queuing — queue according to the floor markings at platform doors, and let passengers exit before you board. Do not board or alight once the door chime sounds.
- Security — security screening is mandatory; if you refuse or carry prohibited items, you will be denied entry.
- Eating and drinking — eating and drinking on trains is prohibited, with exceptions for infants and sick passengers. Smoking, including e-cigarettes, and open flames are banned in stations and trains.
- Quiet and courtesy — audio without headphones, speeches, pushing, running and fighting are all prohibited. Do not knock on the driver's cab or use flash photography that could distract drivers.
- Rush hour — trains are frequent, but the busiest lines (notably Line 3) are heavily used by residents and workers, so finding a seat at peak times can be difficult. Allow extra time for transfers, and note that ticket sales and validation stop when the last train arrives.
- Prohibited items — firearms, controlled weapons, explosives, flammables, radioactive, toxic and corrosive substances are banned, as are strong-odour items, inflated balloons, non-foldable bicycles, electric mobility devices (except disability scooters), oversized or overweight items, and live poultry or animals (except marked service dogs).
- Accessibility — all entrances have accessible ramps, all stations have wide gates and accessible lifts, and wheelchair tie-downs are provided in the middle four carriages of six-car trains and all carriages of four-car trains. Temperature-controlled carriages operate on Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 — choose by the signs at the platform doors. Expectant Mother Badges are available at all stations or via the app.

Keep the Qingdao Metro app or an Alipay transit QR code ready before you reach the gates, and always allow a few extra minutes for the mandatory security check at busy stations.
