Overview
The Baku Metro (Bakı metropoliteni) is the only rapid transit system in Azerbaijan, serving the capital city of Baku. It is a historic system characterized by deep stations and elaborate decorations that blend Azerbaijani motifs with Soviet-era aesthetics. To ride the metro, you will navigate through a network of lines featuring distinct architectural styles. The system operates from 06:00 until 24:00 daily. While it can become very crowded during rush hours, it remains one of the most affordable ways to travel across the city.
The network
The Baku Metro functions as a large four-branch system with several distinct lines and segments:
- Red Line: This line features tracks running from Həzi Aslanov to various points, including a branch that serves the Bakmil station.
- Purple Line (Bənövşə xətti): This line passes through the Memar Əcəmi interchange and is part of the ongoing expansion projects.
- Green Line (Yaşıl xətt): This line also connects at the Memar Əcəmi station and currently includes segments under construction to serve new bus complexes and the airport.
- Blue Line (Mavi xətt): A planned line with a designated depot at Ramana.
- Yellow Line (Sarı xətt): A planned line with a designated depot at Binagadi.
In addition to the metro, other transit options include:
- Suburban Rail: The Baku electric train runs through several parts of Baku and the surrounding area, including Sumqayit.
- Buses and Minibuses: These vehicles provide extensive coverage across the city.
- Funicular: A specialized lift system providing access to the Viewpoint and Flame Towers.
Tickets & fares
The metro operates on a flat fare structure. As of October 1, 2025, the cost per trip is approximately 0.60 AZN (60 gapiks). To use the system, you have several options for payment:
- Bakı Metropiliten Kart: A rechargeable smart card that requires a 3 manat refundable deposit. This card can be used for both metro and bus travel.
- Limited Cards: You may purchase a limited card (costing 0.20 AZN) which comes pre-loaded with 1, 2, 3, or 4 trips. These cards can be shared by multiple people.
- Azerbaycan Sosial Kartı: This is an alternative card type that may be used for payment on the metro.
You can purchase these cards at ticket machines located at metro stations and some bus stops; these machines offer an English language option. Note that while some buses cost 0.60 AZN, specific routes (such as those to Bibi Heybət Mosque) may cost 0.65 AZN.
From the airport
Several options are available to travel from Heydar Aliyev International Airport into the city center:
- T1 Airport Express: This bus runs between the airport and the railway station, with a stop at Koroglu metro station. The fare is approximately 1.30 manat with a BakiKart; however, using contactless bank cards or mobile wallets (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) may result in a higher price of approximately 1.52 manat.
- N16 Bus: This route runs between the airport and Samed Vurgun Park in the heart of Baku. The trip costs 1 manat and takes roughly 40–60 minutes.
- Minibus (No. 135): A more economical option, this minibus travels from the airport traffic circle to the 28 May Metro Station for approximately 0.40 manat.
- Taxi: Taxis are available but prices can vary significantly due to a lack of meters and different pricing structures. You should negotiate the price before beginning the trip; standard rates for trips to the center typically range from 15 to 50 manat depending on the provider.
Etiquette & customs
When navigating the Baku Metro, be mindful of local rules and environment:
- Photography: Do not take photos inside the metro stations; there is clear signage prohibiting photography indoors, though it is permitted outside.
- Crowds: Be prepared for heavy crowds during peak rush hours.
- Navigation: Pay close attention to signage when transferring at major hubs like 28 May and Jafar Jabbarli (Cəfər Cabbarlı), as signs can be difficult to spot.
