Things to Do in Morogoro: Everyday Morogoro Below the Uluguru Mountains

Morogoro, Tanzania

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Boma Road at the upper end of town and the Uluguru Mountains rise directly behind the rooftops, close enough that cloud often sits on the ridge by mid-morning. Morogoro is a working agricultural city, not a resort, and much of what there is to do here is about everyday life: a market, a temple, a pool on a hot afternoon.

This guide suits travellers passing through on the road between Dar es Salaam and the southern highlands, or anyone staying a few days and wanting to see the city on its own terms. It covers the sights and activities the sources describe, with practical notes on how to combine them.

Top things to do in Morogoro

1. The main market

The main market sits off University Road and is the largest of its kind in the city. It is worth your time for the sheer scale of it and for a sense of how Morogoro trades, with produce from the surrounding agricultural area moving through in volume.

It is massive, so get your bearings before you go in rather than trying to work out the layout once you are inside. Go earlier in the day when it is cooler and busier.

2. Hindu Temple

The Hindu Temple on Railway Road is a beautiful building and an active place of worship. If you time your visit for a Saturday, you can attend prayers with Prasadam.

Pair it with a walk along Railway Road, which also passes near the station road end of town.

3. Swimming at Morogoro International School

Morogoro International School, found near the main bus stand and Mambo Club, has a full-sized pool. Non-members pay TSh 4,000 per day.

The tennis courts and children's play areas are also available to paying customers at the weekends, which makes this a good option if you are travelling with children and want to fill a whole afternoon.

4. Swimming at Nashera Hotel

Nashera Hotel, alongside Boma Road, has a pool open to visitors at TSh 5,000 per day. It is the most expensive of the hotel pools listed here, but its position on Boma Road puts it close to the upper end of town.

Combine it with a walk up Boma Road earlier in the day.

5. Swimming at Morogoro Hotel

Morogoro Hotel, near VETA on Rwegashora Road, has a lovely pool available at TSh 4,000 per day. It is a straightforward option for a hot afternoon.

Note the road name when giving directions to a boda boda or Bajaj driver.

6. Swimming at Oasis Hotel

Oasis Hotel has a swimming pool for TSh 3,000 per day, the cheapest of the pools described here. It is on the station road, which makes it easy to reach.

Because it sits on the same road as New Savoy Hotel, you can plan an afternoon swim here and an evening of music further along the road without crossing town.

7. Music at New Savoy Hotel

New Savoy Hotel is on the station road, past Oasis Hotel, and is a place to hear music in a city with a real musical heritage. Morogoro Jazz Band was established in 1944, and the songwriter and guitarist Mbaraka Mwinshehe lived here from the mid-1960s into the 1970s.

It is not safe to walk in this area after dark, so go in a group to avoid hassles, and arrange your transport back rather than setting out on foot.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at the main market off University Road while it is still cool, and take a few minutes outside to get your bearings before entering. Walk or take a boda boda to Railway Road and visit the Hindu Temple.

Afternoon: Spend the hottest part of the day in the water. Choose one of the pools: Oasis Hotel at TSh 3,000, Morogoro Hotel or Morogoro International School at TSh 4,000, or Nashera Hotel on Boma Road at TSh 5,000. If you have children and it is a weekend, Morogoro International School also gives access to the tennis courts and play areas.

Evening: Head to New Savoy Hotel on the station road, past Oasis Hotel, for music. Go in a group and do not walk there or back after dark.
