Stand on the dam at the head of the City Pond and the Iset River runs away from you on both sides, the water held back by a wall of stone first thrown up in the 1720s. Turn around and the city's history stacks up in front of you: a merchant's house, a constructivist apartment block, a keyboard made of white stone.
Yekaterinburg suits travellers who like their cities industrial and literary at once, who are happy to walk a river embankment and read a century of architecture off the facades. It rewards a day of wandering rather than a checklist.

1. Church on the Blood
Built in 2003 on the site of the execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, this is the city's most consequential single site and the one most visitors come for. The building sits near the Dinamo metro station.
Combine it with the embankment walk, since it stands within reach of the City Pond and the streets around Prospekt Lenina.
2. Dam on the River Iset
The dam, known locally as the Plotinka, is the point where the city began: the ironworks that founded Yekaterinburg in 1723 were built here on the Iset. It is the natural hinge of a walk along the water.
It is about 300 m from the Ploshchad 1905 Goda metro station, which makes it an easy first stop before you head along the embankment.
3. QWERTY Monument
Big white stones rise from the river bank near the Ploshchad 1905 Goda metro station, engraved with "Q", "SHIFT" and the rest. It is one of the strangest things you will see in Russia, and it takes only a few minutes.
It sits on the river bank itself, so fold it into the embankment walk rather than making a separate trip.
4. Sevastjanov House
Also known as the District Court and the House of Trade Unions, this is one of the ornate historic buildings on Prospekt Lenina, at number 3. It is worth pausing for the facade on your way along the avenue.
It is close to the embankment sights, so it fits naturally into the same walk.
5. Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts
On Voevodina Street, just south of the Gorodskoy Prud on the west bank of the river, the museum holds works by Russian 18th- and 19th-century artists, minor artists of the 16th- to 18th-century European schools, and small sculptures and jewellery. Admission is 50 руб.
Pair it with the embankment, since it sits directly off the water.
6. Town of Chekists and Hotel "Iset"
An architectural complex at Prospekt Lenina 69, built between 1929 and 1936, occupying the block between Lenina, Lunacharskogo, Pervomayskaya and Kuznechnaya streets. It is a prime piece of the constructivist architecture the city is known for.
It stands on Prospekt Lenina, so you can see it on the same walk as the Central Military District building.
7. Central Military District
The headquarters building at Prospekt Lenina 71, built in 1929. Take tram 4, 8, 13, 15 or 18 to the stop "Восточная улица", or the city train to Pervomayskaya, about 500 m away.
It is next door to the Town of Chekists, so see the two together.
8. Opera and Ballet Theatres
At Prospekt Lenina 46А, reached by tram 2, 6, 13, 15 or 18 to the stop "Оперный Театр". There are many theatres in the inner city around Square of 1905, so this is the anchor for an evening.
Check what is playing before you build an evening around it, and note that the surrounding streets hold the rest of the theatre cluster.
9. Black Tulip War Memorial
Opened in 1995, this memorial remembers soldiers who died in the Afghan War. Its centrepiece is a seated soldier holding a rifle, head bowed, staring at the ground. The name comes from the nickname of the An-12 transport aircraft that carried dead soldiers home.
It is a sombre stop rather than a long one, and works best as part of a walk that includes the other Prospekt Lenina sights.
10. Building of the HQ of Mining plants
At Naberezhnaya Rabochey Molodezhi 3, this is one of the historic buildings on the embankment. It is a short look rather than a destination in itself.
See it while walking the embankment, along with the House of the Merchant Pshenichnikova.
11. House of the Merchant Pshenichnikova
At Naberezhnaya Rabochey Molodezhi 2, dated 1830. Another piece of the embankment's 19th-century frontage.
It sits beside the HQ of Mining plants building, so the two are seen in a single pass.
12. Building of the Sverdlovsk Region Railways
At Ulitsa Chelyuskintsev 11, built between 1925 and 1928. Worth a look if you are already in that part of the centre.
It is away from the embankment cluster, so treat it as a separate short detour.
13. Zotova-Tarasova Manor
At Ulitsa Gorkovo 21, a manor house that adds to the city's stock of historic buildings. A brief stop for anyone interested in the older streets.
It is not on the main embankment route, so slot it in only if your walk takes you that way.
14. Watch football at Yekaterinburg Arena
The stadium hosted matches in the 2018 World Cup and is home to FC Ural, who play in the Russian Premier League. The stadium dates back to 1957 and was upgraded and expanded for the World Cup.
It is 3 km southwest of the city centre; take a tram or bus to Kommunarov Square.
15. Shirokorechenskoye Kladbishche Cemetery
Known as the "Mafia cemetery", with dozens of ornate graves carrying large life-size images in stone of former Mafia members. It is unlike anything else on this list.
Take buses 14, 22, 24, 37к, 048 or 69 to Kontrol'naya. Go in daylight and treat it as a working cemetery.
