Things to Do in Kaduna: Railways, Markets and Colonial History

Kaduna, Nigeria

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand at the gate of Kaduna and look down at the Lugard Footbridge, a structure moved here in 1920 from the old northern capital at Zungeru. The city grew around the Lagos–Kano Railway, and that railway history still shapes how you move through it today.

Kaduna suits travellers interested in northern Nigeria's political and colonial history, in markets and plazas, and in green space and family recreation. It is a working trade and transport hub rather than a resort town, so plan around specific sites rather than wandering.

This guide covers the sights and experiences the sources describe, plus a one-day route that strings the strongest of them together.

Top things to do in Kaduna

1. Arewa House

Arewa House on Rabah Road in Ungwan Sarki Muslimi was designed as the private residence of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, and was converted into a Historical Documentation Centre in 1973. The expanded complex now includes an auditorium, a museum, a library and a restaurant.

It is open Monday to Friday, 8AM to 4PM, and entry is ₦350. Come on a weekday morning so you have time for both the museum and the library.

2. Lugard Footbridge

The footbridge was built in 1904 at Zungeru, then the capital of the northern protectorate, and was reconstructed in 1920 after being moved to the gate of Kaduna. It is a direct piece of the city's colonial-era infrastructure.

It pairs naturally with a walk along Independence Way, where Lugard Hall also stands.

3. Lugard Hall

On Crescent, Independence Way, Lugard Hall served as the House of Assembly and House of Chiefs during Nigeria's first republic, and as the House of the Legislature during the second republic between 1979 and 1983. The structure remains a centre of political power in northern Nigeria.

View it from the outside as part of a circuit that includes the Lugard Footbridge and Arewa House, all in the same part of the city.

4. National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Kaduna

At Plot 47 Ali Akilu Road in the City Centre, this museum holds historical and ancient artefacts telling the story of Kaduna people. It is open 8AM to 6PM.

Its long opening hours make it a good fallback if you arrive in the city in the afternoon, after Arewa House has closed for the day.

5. Kajuru Castle

Kajuru Castle is a stone villa designed like a medieval castle, with turrets and dungeons, and it operates as a tourist site with a resort hotel. It is wheelchair-accessible and appropriate for children, and overnight lodging is available.

Because it is open around the clock and offers lodging, it works best as an overnight stay rather than a quick stop. Call ahead on +234 8156440144 to arrange your visit.

6. Splash Park

Formerly Kofar Gamji Park, Splash Park on Gamji Street has water slides, space for picnics and a zoo. It is described as clean and safe, and it is open 24 hours.

This is the obvious choice if you are travelling with children. Combine it with a picnic rather than planning a separate meal stop.

7. Barnawa Paradise Park

Reached via Benin Close, off Tanzania Road in Barnawa, this private recreational centre has a mini-zoo, gardens and a playground. Animals include monkeys, giant tortoises, rabbits, jackals and peacocks, and there is a children's swimming pool.

You can get there by car, taxi or motorcycle taxi. Bring board games or outdoor games, and note that restaurants, a toy shop and stores selling accessories and ice cream are on site.

8. Makarfi Plaza

On Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Makarfi Plaza is the biggest plaza in Kaduna town, with an underground building and a four-storey building above it. It is a straightforward stop for shopping and for seeing a busy commercial interior.

Call +234 8027086615 if you need to confirm anything before you go.

9. Ahmadu Bello Stadium

At NR 27 Constitution Rd in Kakuri, the stadium is open from 6am and hosts football, volleyball, handball, karate, running and boxing. If you want to watch or join local sport, this is where to do it.

Go early in the morning to catch activity before the heat builds.

10. Kaduna Central Market

The central market sells provisions, furniture, electronics and generators. It can be entered from several directions: from the north through Zaria Road on the Kawo side, from the south via the Yakowa Expressway, and from the east via the bypass that links to the Air Force base.

Decide which approach you want before you set out, since the market is large and the entrances lead to different sections.

11. Murtala Mohammed Square

This large racecourse has a perimeter of approximately 1.6 kilometres, and the Kaduna Polo Club is found inside it. It is a landmark for sport in the city.

Pair it with the Kaduna Golf Club, which is located within the Kaduna central business district, if you want a day built around sport.

12. Kaduna Golf Club

The golf club sits within the Kaduna central business district, making it easy to reach from the City Centre. It is one of the city's established sports facilities.

Combine it with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments on Ali Akilu Road, which is also in the City Centre.

13. Sultan Bello Mosque

Sultan Bello Mosque is the biggest and central mosque in Kaduna. It is one of the city's principal places of worship.

Visit respectfully and outside prayer times, and combine it with the other City Centre stops on Ali Akilu Road.

14. Kaduna Polytechnic Main Campus

Kaduna Polytechnic has four branches, at Sabo, Barnawa, Ugwan Rimi and Tudun Wada, with Tudun Wada serving as the main campus. It is a long-established institution in the city.

If you are visiting the main campus, note that Barnawa Paradise Park is in the same Barnawa area as one of the branches.

15. Rigasa Railway Station

Trains for Abuja depart from Rigasa Railway Station, and Kaduna sits on the completed stretch of the Lagos–Kano Standard Gauge Railway between Abuja and Kaduna. The city is also an important junction on Nigeria's Cape gauge network.

If you are arriving or leaving by rail, build your day around the station rather than treating it as a sight in itself.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start early at Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kakuri, which opens at 6am, then head to Arewa House on Rabah Road when it opens at 8AM. Give the museum and library your full attention before it closes at 4PM.

Afternoon: Move to the City Centre for the National Commission for Museums and Monuments on Ali Akilu Road, which stays open until 6PM. If you have time afterwards, walk Independence Way to see Lugard Hall and the Lugard Footbridge.

Evening: Finish at Makarfi Plaza on Ibrahim Taiwo Road, which is open for shopping into the evening, or take children to Splash Park on Gamji Street, which is open 24 hours.
