Stand on Dolsan Bridge after dark and you will see why Yeosu is a city people plan trips around: the bridge lights shift colour across the water, the seafood restaurants below fill up, and the hillside of Dolsan Park rises behind you with a wider view of the harbour. It is a working port city that has learned to show off its coastline.
Yeosu suits travellers who are happy to move between a clifftop hermitage, a wooden pavilion in the old town, a market that has traded for generations and a beach with black sand. Much of the best of it sits along the water or on Dolsan island, connected by the bridge.
This guide covers the sights and experiences worth your time, followed by a one-day plan that strings them together.
Top things to do in Yeosu
1. Hyangiram Hermitage
A hermitage built up the side of a cliff, with views over the sea and the scattered islands of the Yeosu Peninsula. The complex is connected by very thin trails that wind through tight caves and under twisted evergreen foliage. It is claustrophobic in places, which is part of what makes it distinctive. The turtle is its symbol, taken from the natural hexagonal pattern on the rocks that resembles a turtle's shell, and the monks have carved a large collection of small stone turtles.
It lies in a corner of the islands designated as a national park. Admission is ₩2,500 for adults, ₩1,500 for youth and military police, ₩1,000 for children, and free for those 65 or older, national meritorious persons, disabled visitors (limited to one person) and preschool children. The contact number is +82 61 644 4742.
2. Dolsan bridge
A bridge with changing lights at night, surrounded by seafood restaurants and cafes. It is a good place to see Yeosu's night view. For an even more striking view, climb up to Dolsan Park once you have crossed the bridge. The address is 3617-7 Dolsan-ro, Dolsan-eup.
Pair it with dinner in the area, since the restaurants and cafes cluster around the bridge.
3. Replica turtle ship
A full-sized replica of one of Admiral Yi's turtle ships. You can walk around the inside, which is filled with mannequins acting out daily life on board. It sits just south of Dolsan bridge, so it fits naturally into the same outing as the bridge and Dolsan Park.
4. Jinnamgwan
Korea's largest single-storey wooden pavilion, with a small museum attached. It is free to enter. The address is 11 Dongmun-ro, about 100 m up the hill from the plaza beside the harbour, and the contact number is +82 61 659 5711.
Because it is close to the harbour plaza, it works well as a stop while you are walking the old town rather than as a separate trip.
5. Odong island
An island reached from the mainland, and one of the departure points for cruises. The address is 222 Odong-ro and the contact number is +82 61 659 1819.
Use it as your starting point if you want to spend time on the water rather than on land.
6. Ocean Cruise
From Odong island or from across Dolsan Bridge, dozens of different cruises hop between the islands of Hallyeo Ocean Park. This is the easiest way to see the geography that defines Yeosu.
Choose your departure point based on what else you have planned that day: Odong island if you are on that side, Dolsan Bridge if you are already across the water.
7. West market
A traditional market in Seogyo-dong that has operated for more than 100 years, and the largest general market in Yeosu. It sells marine products, clothing and meat. Opening hours are 6:00 to 20:00, the address is Seo Market, 16-6, Jwasuyeong-ro, and the contact number is +82 61 642 6720.
Go in the morning for the fullest stalls, and bring cash for small purchases.
8. Manseongri Black Sand Beach
The only black sand beach in Korea, and the liveliest beach in Yeosu, with plenty of restaurants and cafes along the sand. It is in Manheung-dong.
Along the coastline between Manseongri and Yeosu train station is Marae Tunnel, the only natural rock tunnel in Korea, so combine the two if you are walking or driving that stretch.
9. Jasan Park
A park with a view of Yeosu and a statue of Yi Sun Shin. The contact number is +82 61 659 4627.
It is a straightforward stop for an overview of the city, best slotted in when you want a break from the waterfront.
10. Soho-dong
A coastal area with a yacht marina, various restaurants and cafes along the shore. Come here when you want a slower meal or coffee with a sea view rather than a scheduled sight.
11. Maritime Fisheries and Science Museum
Located on the thinnest part of Dolsan island, beside the main road. It is an easy addition if you are already crossing to Dolsan for the bridge, the turtle ship or the cruises.
12. Mount Gubong
A mountain in yeoseodong (여서동), useful if you want to walk rather than stay on the coast.
13. Paraocean Waterpark
Located in the latest and biggest resort in Yeosu, the Ocean Resort waterpark has dozens of indoor and outdoor pools and slides, as well as a spa, restaurants and shops. The contact number is 1588-0377.
This is a wet-weather or rest-day option, and one to book around if you are travelling with children.
