From the summit of Yudalsan the city folds around you: the old downtown on one side, the harbour on the other, and beyond it a scatter of islands across the Yellow Sea. Mokpo is a port town at the southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula, and much of what is worth your time sits within a short walk or a cable car ride of that view.
It suits travellers who like working harbours, short ferry hops and seafood, and who are happy to spend a day on foot between a mountain, a plaza and a cluster of small museums.
1. Yudalsan Park
Yudalsan Park is the anchor of a visit to Mokpo. The walk to the summit rewards you with a commanding view over the city and the many scenic islands offshore, and the mountain is surrounded by strange cliffs that rise like a wall. It is open 24 hours and you can bring a dog.
On the way up, look for the noon gun installed during the Japanese occupation and two Buddhist rock carvings. If you would rather not walk, the Mokpo Marine Cable Car runs from Bukhang (North Port) to the peak and then across the sea to another island.
2. Mokpo Marine Cable Car North Port Station
The cable car is a sightseeing route in its own right, offering a panoramic view of Mokpo's old downtown, North Port, Yudalsan Mountain and the Dadohae scenery including Gohado Island. It is the longest cable car in Korea and reaches the highest point of any in the country.
It runs Friday and Saturday 09:00–20:00 and Sunday to Thursday 09:00–19:00. Combine it with a walk on Yudalsan at the top rather than treating it as transport alone.
3. Mokpo Peace Plaza
Mokpo Peace Plaza is the representative square of the city and a place to slow down. Come for the sea scenery during the day and stay for the night view of Mokpo in the evening; it is open 24 hours.
It is also the base for the Mokpo Peace Plaza Marine Leisure Experience Classroom, where you can try kayaking, paddleboating and jet boating in the waters offshore. That activity runs annually from September to October, is free, and requires an online reservation.
4. Samhakdo
Samhakdo takes its name from three peaks that rose where three cranes fell. It was an island until the late 1960s, when reclamation of the waters off Mokpo joined it to the land, and it has since been transformed into a lake that offers a beautiful nighttime view.
It sits in Sanjeong-dong and is also the departure point for the Samhakdo Cruise, so you can pair a walk here with a boat trip.
5. Samhakdo Cruise
This cruise carries up to 890 passengers along the Mokpo coastline, departing from Samhakdo Island and passing 14 locations including Mokpo Bridge before returning. Each trip lasts about one hour and 20 minutes, and the route may change with the weather.
Departure times are 11:00, 14:30, 18:00 and 18:30. Fares vary by service: the Samhakdo Cruise is ₩20,000 for adults and ₩12,000 for minors, the Fireworks Busking Cruise ₩35,000 and ₩22,000, the Sunset Yacht ₩50,000 and ₩35,000, and the Public Yacht ₩30,000 and ₩20,000.
6. Sihwa
Sihwa is a set of tiny old streets on a hillside, decorated with artistic paintings and made famous by the drama Love and Ambition. There is a small resting area at the top. It is free.
People live in these small colourful houses, so keep your voice down as you walk through. It is described as the best place to spend an hour while waiting for your ferry.
7. Gatbawi
Gatbawi is a group of big rocks with a strange shape, illuminated at night. It is free to visit.
Because the lighting is the point, an evening stop makes more sense than a daytime one. It falls within the Mokpo Special Tourist Zone, which runs from the northern port through Yudalsan, the Old Town Area, Samhakdo and Gatbawi.
8. Mokpo Modern History Museum – Hall No. 1
This museum covers modern history and occupies a neoclassical building that once served as the Japanese Consulate in Mokpo; the building of the Oriental Development Company's Mokpo branch is also part of the complex. Much of the original exterior survives, and the site is well known as a filming location for television dramas.
It is in Yudal-dong and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30–17:30. Admission is ₩2,000 for adults and ₩1,000 for youths or soldiers.
9. Mokpo Maritime Museum
Operated by the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage, this museum is run by the only national organisation in Korea dedicated to excavating and researching underwater cultural heritage and exhibiting what it finds. It has four permanent exhibition halls, a special exhibition hall, an outdoor exhibition area and a children's experience centre.
The outdoor area displays actual ships and has playgrounds shaped like boats, while the children's centre lets young visitors see, touch and learn. It is free, and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–18:00.
10. Mokpo Natural History Museum
This museum presents modern exhibits on the 4.6-billion-year history of the Earth, with dinosaur fossils, minerals, insects, birds and marine life, alongside materials representing the history and culture of Korea's southwestern region.
It is closed on Mondays and otherwise open 09:00–18:00, with last entry one hour before closing. Admission is ₩3,000 for adults, ₩2,000 for teenagers and soldiers, ₩1,000 for elementary school students and ₩500 for preschoolers.
11. Gohado
Gohado Island takes its name from Yudalsan Mountain, Mokpo's highest mountain, and stands as if embracing the coastline. Admiral Yi Sun-sin's navy used it strategically during the Imjin War to block enemy advances.
You can reach it by bus 33 or by cable car from Mokpo. It pairs naturally with the cable car crossing over the sea.
12. Gatbawi Literature Hall
Part of the Gatbawi cultural area, this hall features information about famous writers from Mokpo. Admission is ₩2,000.
Note that no English is available on site, so it is best suited to visitors who read Korean or are willing to go without labels.
13. Mokpo Harbor Festival
Held around October each year at Mokpo Port and Samhakdo Island, this festival lets visitors enjoy the traditions of Mokpo. You can cook seasonal seafood bought through an auction on the spot.
The timing varies from year to year, so check ahead before planning around it. In one recent year it ran from 26 to 28 September.
14. Yudalsan Flower Festival
This event is held around Yudalsan in early April every year, with various foods and entertainment options on offer.
It combines well with a walk up the mountain, since the festival takes place on its slopes.
15. Mokpo World Madang Festival
Artists from eight countries, including Laos and China, take part in overseas guest performances, alongside parties with free markets, food trucks and beer.
It is a good evening option if your visit coincides with it, and it sits easily alongside the other events held around the port.
If you only have one day
Morning: Start at Mokpo Modern History Museum – Hall No. 1 in Yudal-dong when it opens at 09:30, then walk up Yudalsan Park to the summit for the view over the city and islands, looking out for the noon gun and the Buddhist rock carvings on the way. If you would rather ride, take the Mokpo Marine Cable Car North Port Station up instead.
Afternoon: Come down to Mokpo Peace Plaza for the sea scenery and something to eat, then continue to Samhakdo for the lake and the walk around it. If the season allows, book the Mokpo Peace Plaza Marine Leisure Experience Classroom in advance, or take the Samhakdo Cruise at 14:30.
Evening: Return to Mokpo Peace Plaza for the night view, or head to Gatbawi to see the rocks lit up after dark. If you have time before a ferry, spend the wait in Sihwa.
