Things to Do in Toyohashi: Yoshida Castle and the Tōkaidō

Toyohashi, Japan

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Step off the tram at Shiyakusho-mae and walk into Toyohashi Park: the stone walls of Yoshida Castle rise straight out of the greenery, and on a clear morning you can look up from the moat to the ridges of the city beyond. It is an easy introduction to a place that has been a crossing point on the Tōkaidō for centuries.

Toyohashi suits travellers moving between Tokyo and Nagoya who want a day off the shinkansen treadmill, and anyone following the old Tōkaidō post road east. It also works well for families, with a combined zoo and botanical garden, and for those who prefer their history outdoors and unhurried.

This guide covers the sights the city is known for, the one event that fills its hotel calendars in winter, and how to string the best of it together if you have a single day.

Top things to do in Toyohashi

1. Yoshida Castle

Feudal lord Kohaku Makino built the castle in 1505 and originally called it Imahashi Castle. After the Warring States period it was renamed Yoshida Castle and became the residence of Terumasa Ikeda.

Take the tram to Shiyakusho-mae and head into Toyohashi Park, where the castle stands. Combine it with a wander through the park itself, and go early if you want the walls to yourself.

2. Futagawa Shuku Honjin Museum

This is a reconstruction of the original Tōkaidō lodge, completed in 1988, in Futagawa-cho, Naka-machi. It is the stop to make if you are following the old post road and want to understand how travellers on the Tōkaidō were housed.

It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30 to 17:00. Admission is ¥400 for adults and ¥100 for students. Futagawa also has its own stop on the Tōkaidō Main Line, so you can pair it with the castle without returning to the centre.

3. Toyohashi Zoo and Botanical Gardens (Nonhoi Park)

Known as Nonhoi Park, this combined zoo and botanical garden is the city's main draw for families and a relaxed half-day in its own right.

It is open 09:00 to 16:30. Admission is ¥600 for adults and ¥100 for children. Allow more time than you think, since the animals and the plantings are spread across one site.

4. Irago

Close to Toyohashi and right next to Tahara, Irago is the most popular surfing area for this part of Japan. Come here if you want time on the water rather than in the city.

It sits beyond the city boundary near Tahara, so treat it as a separate outing and check conditions before you commit to the trip.

5. Japan Meeting of Furries

Japan's main furry convention is held at the Loisir Hotel, a short bus ride away from Toyohashi Station. Almost 2,000 people attend each year, with a great number of costumed mascots and fursuiters.

It runs in early to mid January each year from Friday to Sunday, though some years have seen it start on Thursday evening. Admission is charged at ¥9000 for the whole weekend, but access to public, non-event areas of the venue such as the hotel lobby and outdoor courtyard, as well as the shuttle to and from Toyohashi Station, is free.

If you only have one day

Morning: Take the tram to Shiyakusho-mae and spend the early hours at Yoshida Castle in Toyohashi Park, before the day warms up.

Afternoon: Ride the Tōkaidō Main Line to Futagawa and visit the Futagawa Shuku Honjin Museum, open until 17:00, to see how the old post road worked.

Evening: Return to Toyohashi Station, which is the hub for the shinkansen, the Tōkaidō Main Line, the Iida Line, the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line and the Toyohashi Railroad lines, and eat around the station before your onward train.
