Monasteries Where Two Traditions Meet
Walk through the gates of Tashi Gomang Shedra Buddhist Monastery in Salugara—a fifteen-to-twenty-minute drive from the city centre—and you enter a space that draws pilgrims and curious travellers alike. Inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 1999, this monastery belongs to the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and sits as a living link between Himalayan spiritual practice and the plains below. The quiet courtyards and prayer halls offer a genuine encounter with monastic life, far from the city's traffic.
Siliguri holds several other monasteries worth exploring if you want to understand how Buddhist practice has taken root here. Buddha Mundir Monastery in Salbari was established by the Nyingma yogi Chatral Sangye Dorji Rinpoche. The large Ewam (Nupchen Namchak) Monastery, also known as Toribari Gompa, sits in Toribari Village in the Bhaktinagar area and follows the Nyingma tradition. Khordong Byangter Monastery on the road to Darjeeling near NJP Station is another Nyingma community with accommodation available if you want to stay longer. And in Salbari, Triratna Monastery welcomes visitors into its Nyingma practice space.
If you're drawn to other faiths, the ISKCON Temple on Iskcon Road houses idols of Advaita Acharya, Lord Narasimha, and Lord Chaitanya and serves as a centre for devotional worship in the city.
Wildlife and the Mahananda Sanctuary
The North Bengal Wild Animals' Park—often called Bengal Safari Park—occupies the Siliguri section of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary at 5 Mile, Salugara. Tigers, leopards, elephants, and herbivorous animals roam here in a forest-park setting. You can arrange elephant rides and move through the landscape the way earlier travellers did, watching the land rise toward the mountains. Entry is ₹200 for half an hour or ₹400 for a full hour, making it an accessible way to spend an afternoon in the natural world that surrounds this city.
Science, Learning, and Seasonal Culture
The North Bengal Science Centre in Matigara houses a museum, a planetarium, and an Interpretation Centre displaying various types of flora. It's the kind of place where you can spend an hour or a morning, especially if you're travelling with curiosity about the region's natural heritage.
In early December, the North Bengal Book Fair takes over the Kanchanjunga Stadium Fair Ground for its first two weeks. This is one of the city's significant cultural events—a chance to encounter local writers, publishers, and readers gathered in one space, and to get a feel for what matters to the reading public in North Bengal.
Amusement Parks and River-Side Time
If you're looking for a more casual afternoon, Dreamland Amusement Park in Fulbari opens from 10 AM to 7 PM and offers rides and entertainment in a theme-park setting. Savin Kingdom near Darjeeling More combines an amusement park with a water park set among tea plantations—open daily from 10:30 AM to 6 PM—giving you a sense of the agricultural landscape that surrounds the city.
Surya Sen Park in Janta Nagar sits along a river with kids' rides, play equipment, shade trees, and a miniature train. It opens from 3 to 7 PM daily and hosts alternative energy exhibitions and picnic areas, making it a spot where locals and visitors mix in the cooler evening hours.
When to Come
The winter months bring pleasant temperatures—maximum around 20 to 25°C and minimum between 6 and 9°C—making them the most comfortable time to explore. If you're here in early December, you'll catch the North Bengal Book Fair. Avoid the monsoon season from June to September, when rainfall exceeds 3,000 millimetres annually and July alone sees 804 millimetres. Summer heat can exceed 38°C, making outdoor walking less appealing, though the monasteries offer cool refuges.
Siliguri's position at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, on the banks of the Mahananda, with roads leading toward Nepal, Bhutan, and the Northeast, makes it a natural stopping point—a place where you can touch both the spiritual traditions of the Himalayan world and the practical life of a modern Indian city. Start by visiting one of the monasteries, move through the wildlife park, and let the landscape pull you toward whatever comes next.
