Things to Do in Hosapete: Gateway to Hampi and Vijayanagara

Hosapete, India

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on the road out of Hosapete towards the river and you are standing on the old western approach to Vijayanagara, the route travellers took into the empire's capital five centuries ago. The town itself was raised in 1520 by Krishna Deva Raya and named for his mother, and the area between here and Hampi is still called Naagalapura.

Hosapete suits travellers using it as a base rather than a destination in its own right: it is the practical gateway to Hampi, with road and rail links to Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai, and a well-developed market area for supplies. This guide covers the sights and experiences the sources support, and how to string them into a single day.

Top things to do in Hosapete

1. Tungabhadra dam (TB dam)

One of the biggest dams in Karnataka and the main draw in Hosapete itself, roughly 4 km from the KSRTC bus stand. Entry to the dam is free, and alongside it are a large garden with an aviary, an aquarium and a deer park; the gardens are charged at ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for children.

Time your visit for the evening: a musical water fountain plays every day from 7PM to 8:30PM. It is also a good place to pass time if you are waiting for a late-night bus out of Hosapete. Take a bus or share auto for ₹10, or a tuk-tuk for ₹60.

2. Hampi

Hampi, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 13 km from Hosapete and is the reason most travellers stop here at all. The town is the connecting link between the two, which makes it the natural base for a day at the ruins.

Pair it with the Tungabhadra dam on the same outing if you have transport, since both sit on the river side of town.

3. VijayShree heritage

An authentic Rajasthani heritage village with cottages and a restaurant, and staff who are consistently well regarded. It is a place to eat and, if you want to stay out of town, to sleep.

Rooms were on the expensive side — ₹5000–7000 in 2009 — so check current rates before committing. Treat the food as the low-commitment way to sample it.

4. The market area

Hosapete has a well-developed market area, useful for stocking up before heading to Hampi or the dam, and for seeing the everyday city rather than the sights around it.

Combine it with a wander along the Tungabhadra riverbank, which the city sits on.

5. The tallest flagpole in the nation

The city is home to the tallest flagpole in the country: on Independence Day, 15 August 2022, Hosapete hoisted the national flag on a 405 ft (123 m) pole. It is a landmark of the modern town rather than of the Vijayanagara story.

It is a quick stop, best folded into a walk through the city rather than made the purpose of a trip.

6. Hosapete Junction railway station

The station lies on the Hubballi–Guntakal line and is how many visitors arrive, with connections to Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. Even if you come by road, it is worth knowing where it is for onward travel.

If you are flying in, the nearest airport is Jindal Vijaynagar Airport, about 30 km away, with daily flights to and from Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at the market area to get your bearings and pick up anything you need, then head out to Hampi, 13 km away, and give the ruins the bulk of the day.

Afternoon: Return towards Hosapete and continue to the Tungabhadra dam, about 4 km from the KSRTC bus stand. Walk the dam itself, which is free, then pay the garden entry — ₹20 for adults, ₹10 for children — for the aviary, aquarium and deer park.

Evening: Stay on at the dam for the musical water fountain, which plays daily from 7PM to 8:30PM, then eat at VijayShree heritage. If you have a late bus or train out, the dam gardens are a comfortable place to wait.
