1. Mananchira Pond and Gardens
A sprawling park around a clean pond, with statues, a very big lawn to relax on, an artificial stream, a musical fountain, a music stage and an open-air theatre. The park is ringed by historic buildings: the town hall, the art gallery and the Crown Theatre on the western side, the Basel Evangelical Mission and Girls School on the eastern side, and the Commonwealth Company building nearby.
The gate opens only after 2PM and entrance is free, so plan this for the afternoon rather than the morning. The circular mosque called Pattala Pally sits on the southern side of the park, and the crowded Mittayi Theruvu shopping zone begins on the same side.
2. Mittayi Theruvu
The Sweetmeat Street was an important trading street under the Zamorins, and it remains the busiest shopping zone in the city. It runs off the southern side of Mananchira Pond, which makes it the natural next step after a walk in the park.
Go on foot and go slowly. The street is crowded, and the point is the press of people and shops rather than any single stop.
3. Thali Temple
A beautiful 14th-century temple at Palayam, with a second temple near a very big pond and a vegetable market. The temple walls are elephant-shaped, which is the detail most visitors remember.
Combine it with the market and pond next door, and keep in mind that the name Kozhikode may derive from Koyil-kota, meaning fortified palace, possibly referring to this temple.
4. Mishkal Mosque
A 600-year-old structure at Kuttichira, built mostly of wood across four levels, with no cupolas or minarets. It looks closer to a Hindu temple than to a conventional mosque, and Kerala's temple architecture is thought to have influenced old mosques here, which have gopuram-style entrance arches and no minarets.
The mosque is very photogenic when you look at it from the other side of the pond, which is surrounded by several old buildings. Non-Muslims need special permission to enter the mosque, so plan on viewing it from the water's edge.
5. Sarovaram Biopark
A 200-acre area near Baby Hospital with canal walkways, boating facilities, an Otter Park and a Butterfly Park. It holds seven mangrove species, twenty-nine mangrove associates, fauna ranging from protozoa to otter, and a habitat that draws twenty types of water birds.

8. Pazhassi Raja Archaeological Museum

At Chevarambalam, this is a tribal research station maintained by the government.

Near Town Hall, about a kilometre from the centre.

Head south to Mohammedhali Beach, follow the promenade to Francis Road junction within ten minutes, then continue along the beach road past Kannanm Parambil cemetery, Kannam Parambil mosque, Nainan Valappil beach and finally the New Kothy bridge.
Cross the bridge to reach Chakkukm Kadavu village and proceed to Payyanakkal beach. Ask for Panniyankara police station to get back to the main road, and return by one of the green buses, which all go to Mananchira pond junction.

A 5 km walk starting from the Nalam Gate. After the railway gate the road forks into three; take the third, walking past Caffe Coffee Day and Gateway Hotel, with the Mayor Residence and Moidhu Museum on the way. Enter Vellayil Road and walk to the beach, where there is a very short sea bridge and the Vellayil Fishing Harbour.
Turn right along the beach and you pass Vellayil Police Station, Shanthi Nagar, Radio Mango, Puthiyappa, Vengaly, Elathur and Pavangad. Pavangad offers air-conditioned buses back to the city.

Morning. Start at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium, Calicut near the new bus station, since regular shows run only in the forenoons. From there, walk the City Walk Two route, which begins at the bus stand, passes Markaz Mosque and Samastha centre, turns right towards More Supermarket, the Planetarium and Science Centre, continues through Cherootty Nagar and on past Bhagavathy Temple, Muthappan Forest, Balan K Nair Road and the Zoological Survey of India, before returning to the new bus stand.
