Things to Do in Sumedang: Sumedang Tofu, Tombs and Colonial Roads

Sumedang, Indonesia

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Jalan 11 April in the centre of town and the smell of hot oil and frying tofu tells you where you are before any sign does. Sumedang is a highland town in Western Java, just south of Mount Tampomas, and it wears its history lightly: a museum of Sundanese regalia on Geusan Ulun Road, a colonial road cut through rock on the edge of town, and a tomb that marks where an Acehnese heroine spent her last years.

This guide suits travellers passing between Bandung and the north coast, or anyone spending a day or two in the Priangan highlands and wanting to eat well while doing it. It covers the sights named in the sources, the town's famous tofu, and how to string them together.

Top things to do in Sumedang

1. Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun

On Jl. Prabu Geusan Ulun No. 40 B, this museum holds a collection of traditional Sundanese weaponry along with crown jewels and other finery. It is the single best introduction to the regency's royal past, and the reason to build a morning around the centre of town.

It opens Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday to Sunday, 08:00-14:00, so plan your visit for a morning rather than late afternoon. The phone number listed is +62 261 201 714.

2. Tahu Bunkeng

Sumedang's fried tofu, known as tahu sumedang, was originally called "tahu bunkeng", and Tahu Bunkeng is one of the oldest tofu stores in the city. The authentic version was first made by Ong Kino, a Chinese immigrant from Anxi County in Fujian, in the early 20th century.

The outlet sits in the city centre on Jalan 11 April No. 53, Tegalkalong. Branches are on Jalan M. Abdurahman No. 50, Jalan M. Abdurahman No. 155, and Jalan Prabu Gajah Agung, so you are rarely far from a plate of it.

3. Cadas Pangeran

This is a section of the trans-Java postal road, built on the order of Dutch governor Willem Daendels in the first quarter of the 19th century. It is known for the difficulty of its construction, which required blasting a mountainside; "cadas" means mountain rock in Sundanese. The work was completed through cooperation between the governor, the regent Kusumadinata, known as "pangeran kornel", and the people of Sumedang, though with considerable ill-feeling because of forced labour.

A statue commemorating the event stands on the section. Pair it with a stop for tofu on the way back into town.

4. Mount Tampomas

The volcanic mountain rises just north of town to 1,684 m and is usually climbed from Cimalaka District, 7 km from Sumedang. Treat it as a full outing rather than an afternoon add-on.

Because the approach begins outside the town, sort out your transport to Cimalaka before you set off.

5. Tomb of Cut Nyak Dhien

The Acehnese national heroine Cut Nyak Dhien was exiled to Sumedang in her old age, after her capture during the Aceh War at the beginning of the 20th century. Her tomb lies near the town.

It is a quiet stop that pairs naturally with the museum, since both deal with the same stretch of Indonesian history.

6. Gunung Kunci

Gunung Kunci is listed among the town's attractions and is worth folding into a walk or drive around the centre. Keep it as a short stop rather than a half-day.

Combine it with the museum and the tofu shops on the same outing, since all sit within the town.

7. Masjid Agung Sumedang

The town's great mosque is one of several places of worship in Sumedang and a natural point on any walk through the centre.

Dress modestly and time your visit outside prayer times if you want to look around calmly.

8. Masjid Agung Tegalkalong

A second large mosque, this one in Tegalkalong, the same area as the main Tahu Bunkeng outlet on Jalan 11 April.

It fits neatly into a stop for tofu: eat, then walk over.

9. Al Huda

Al Huda is one of the town's places of worship and can be included in a circuit of the central mosques.

As with the other mosques, visit respectfully and avoid the busiest prayer periods.

10. Masjid Islamic

Masjid Islamic is another of Sumedang's places of worship, useful if you are already moving between the centre and the surrounding districts.

Keep it as a brief pause rather than a destination in itself.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun on Jl. Prabu Geusan Ulun No. 40 B, arriving when it opens at 08:00 and giving the weaponry and regalia a proper look before it closes at 14:00.

Afternoon: Head to Jalan 11 April No. 53 in Tegalkalong for Tahu Bunkeng, then walk over to Masjid Agung Tegalkalong nearby. If you have time and transport, continue out to Cadas Pangeran and the statue on the old postal road.

Evening: Close the day at the Tomb of Cut Nyak Dhien near town, a quiet end to a day that began with Sundanese royal regalia and ended with an Acehnese heroine's resting place.
