Things to Do in Bandar Lampung

Bandar Lampung, Indonesia

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

From the overlook at Puncak Mas on Jalan PB. Marga, the city spreads out below you in the late afternoon, and by early evening the sky over Lampung Bay turns the colour of a ripe mango. That view is the simplest introduction to Bandar Lampung, a port city at the southern tip of Sumatra where the streets between Tanjung Karang and Teluk Betung carry a mix of Javanese, Lampungese, Sundanese, Bantenese, Chinese and Minangkabau residents.

This guide suits travellers passing through southern Sumatra, or anyone using the city as a base for the beaches and islands along the bay.

1. Puncak Mas

This hilltop viewpoint on Jalan PB. Marga in Sukadana Ham looks out over the city, and it is the spot most visitors head for when they want photographs or a sunset. Admission is Rp20,000, with a further Rp10,000 for parking, and it stays open daily from 08:00 to 23:00.

Come in the late afternoon so you catch the view in daylight and then watch the sun go down. Because it is open until late, it also works as an evening stop after a day of sightseeing elsewhere.

2. Lampung Museum

On Jalan ZA. Pagar Alam, this museum holds a gallery of exhibits on the history and culture of Bandar Lampung and Lampung, including bronze work, ceramics, representative Sumatran dwellings, fauna dioramas and weaponry. Admission is around Rp5,000.

Opening hours are 08:00 to 14:00 Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 10:30 on Friday and 08:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, and it is closed on Sunday. Go in the morning, since the doors shut early in the afternoon.

3. Pasir Putih Beach

About 20 km south of Bandar Lampung on Jalan Trans Sumatra in Tarahan, this is a busy tourist area with beautiful reefs and very calm waves. The traditional boats here can take you to one or more of the small islands in Lampung Bay, with boat rides ranging from five minutes to several hours depending on the island.

The islands have clean white sand and are quiet during the week, since most visitors come at weekends. You can arrive in the morning and ask your boat operator to pick you up in the afternoon, so there is no need to check out of your hotel.

4. Pantai Sari Ringgung

On Jalan Way Ratai at KM 14 in Sidodadi, this beach is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00. The entry fee is a bit steep at around Rp20,000, and the highlight is a boat ride or rental out to the floating mosque on Tegal Pulau island or to a sandbar, which costs extra.

Plan the boat trip as the main event of your visit rather than treating it as an add-on. Arriving early gives you calmer water and more time on the sandbar.

5. Taman Wisata Hutan Kera (Monkey Forest Tourism Park)

On Jalan Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo in Sumur Batu, Teluk Betung Utara, this park is open around the clock and entry is free. Monkeys are everywhere, and you can hang out with them, though they will raid your belongings if you do not bring food.

If you do bring food, choose healthy fruits rather than snacks. Keep bags closed and hold on to anything you would rather not lose.

6. Taman Kupu-Kupu Gita Persada (Gita Persada Butterfly Park)

On Jalan Wan Abdulrachman, this park is open from 07:00 to 17:00 and holds about 160 species of butterflies. It also has photo spots, a cafe and a museum describing butterflies, with admission at Rp10,000.

The cafe makes it easy to break up a morning here. Combine it with the other sites along Jalan Wan Abdulrachman, such as Wira Garden and the deer enclosure, which sit on the same road.

7. Wira Garden

On Jalan Wan Adburahman in Batu Putu, this botanical garden has a waterway and some sandstone formations. It is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00 and admission is Rp10,000.

Because it shares a road with the butterfly park and the deer enclosure, the three fit naturally into one outing. Wear shoes you do not mind getting a little damp near the waterway.

8. Penangkaran Rusa Taman Hutan Raya

On Jalan Wan Abdurrahman in Sumber Agung, this is a deer feeding area open daily from 07:00 to 18:00. It is a straightforward stop, best suited to anyone travelling with children or wanting a quiet hour outdoors.

Pair it with Wira Garden and the butterfly park on the same road. The early opening means you can start here before the other two.

9. Pantai Mutun (Mutun Beach)

This is a water park attached to the beach on Lampung Bay, with clear water and banana boat rentals among the activities on offer. Entry is Rp25,000.

It suits a half day if you want both swimming and a few water activities in one place. The attached water park means you can stay put rather than moving between sites.

10. Pantai Gunung Kunyit (Mount Kunyit Beach)

On Jalan Ikan Terbang in Bumi Waras, Teluk Betung Selatan, this beach has small sand hills and sits near Mount Kunyit. It is a simple coastal stop rather than a full day out.

It works well as a short add-on if you are already in the Teluk Betung area. The sand hills are the feature worth seeking out.

11. Adipura Monument

This is the iconic Bandar Lampung monument, set in a roundabout at the junction of Ahmad Yani and Jalan Diponegoro. It is a landmark rather than an attraction with facilities.

Look for it as you move between Tanjung Karang and other parts of the city, since the roundabout sits on a main route. It is a quick stop, not a destination in itself.

12. Teropong Kota Bukit Sindy

On Jalan Tamin, this is an overlook with a coffee-drinking respite attached. The source notes the view is a bit underwhelming, so treat it as a place to sit with a drink rather than a viewpoint to travel for.

It fits best when you want a break between other stops rather than as a planned highlight. Go for the coffee and the pause.

13. Pantai Pasir Putih Lampung

In Rangai Tri Tunggal, this beach has pretty offshore haystack rocks and islets, and boat rides to nearby islands cost an additional Rp100,000. Admission is Rp10,000. Be aware that it sometimes has lots of plastic debris and a foul smell, and it sits in a somewhat industrial area.

If you make the trip, the offshore rocks are the reason to go. Check conditions on arrival before committing to a boat ride.

14. Slanik Waterpark

On Jalan Raya Karang Anyar, this water park has features such as an artificial mountain with water pouring out of it and Indonesian huts. Admission is Rp35,000 for adults and Rp20,000 for children. The source notes the water can be dirty at times, the toilets dirty, the site crowded and the wave pool malfunctioning.

Go with managed expectations and treat it as a casual family stop. The artificial mountain and huts are the more distinctive elements.

15. Taman Wisata Dan Taman Satwa Lembah Hijau (Green Valley Tourist Park and Animal Park)

On Jalan Raden Imba Kusuma Ratu, this is an amusement, water and zoological park with a ropes course, bumper cars, sun bears and deer on display. General admission is Rp25,000, with additional fees for certain attractions such as the water park and elephant rides at Rp35,000. The source describes the animal and amusement upkeep as not exactly optimal and the water as sometimes dirty.

Budget for the extra fees if you want the rides, since they are not included in the entry price. It is best for families who want several activities in one location.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at Lampung Museum on Jalan ZA. Pagar Alam when it opens at 08:00, since it closes at 14:00 on weekdays and earlier on Friday and Saturday. From there, head out along Jalan Wan Abdulrachman to the Penangkaran Rusa Taman Hutan Raya, which opens at 07:00, then continue to Wira Garden and Taman Kupu-Kupu Gita Persada, both on the same road.

Afternoon: Travel south to Pasir Putih Beach on Jalan Trans Sumatra in Tarahan, about 20 km from the city. Take a traditional boat to one of the small islands in Lampung Bay, ranging from a five-minute ride to several hours, and arrange with the operator to collect you later in the afternoon.

Evening: Return to the city and finish at Puncak Mas on Jalan PB. Marga, which stays open until 23:00. Arrive before sunset to take in the city view and the photographs, then stay for the sunset itself.

When is the best time of day to visit Puncak Mas?

Late afternoon into early evening. It is open from 08:00 to 23:00 daily, and visitors come both for photographs and to admire the sunsets.

Can I visit the islands in Lampung Bay without checking out of my hotel?

Yes. From Pasir Putih Beach you can come in the morning and ask the boat operator to pick you up in the afternoon. Boat rides to the islands range from five minutes to several hours.

Is the Lampung Museum open on Sunday?

No. It is closed on Sunday. It opens 08:00 to 14:00 Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 10:30 on Friday and 08:00 to 12:00 on Saturday.

What should I know before bringing food to the Monkey Forest Tourism Park?

Entry is free and the park is open 24 hours, but the monkeys will raid your belongings if you do not bring food. If you do bring some, choose healthy fruits rather than other snacks.

With the viewpoints, museums, parks and beaches above mapped out, you have enough to start planning your days in Bandar Lampung.
