Things to Do in Jember: Tobacco, Tape and a Costumed Catwalk

Jember, Indonesia

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

On a Sunday in August or September, Jalan P.B. Sudirman fills with costumed participants walking a catwalk that runs for kilometres through the centre of town. That single event tells you a lot about Jember: a working regency in East Java's tobacco country, with a food culture built on tape, fermented cassava, and a willingness to put on a show.

The town suits travellers passing through East Java who want a stop that is not organised around tourism, and who are interested in tobacco, print and type, or a large street parade. It also works as a base for the coast to the south, where the regency includes the island of Nusa Barong.

This guide covers the sights and events in and around the town of Jember, with a one-day plan that links them.

Top things to do in Jember

1. JFC (Jember Fashion Carnaval)

The Jember Fashion Carnaval is an annual street event, usually held in August or September and lasting three days, with the peak on the Sunday. Around 600 participants walk a catwalk recorded as the longest of its kind at 3.6 kilometres, along Jalan P.B. Sudirman (Central Park) and Jalan Gajah Mada up to the Jember Sport Hall.

If your trip can be moved, plan it around the carnival rather than the other way round, and treat the Sunday as the day to be in town. Expect hundreds of thousands of spectators along the route, so pick your position on Jalan P.B. Sudirman or Jalan Gajah Mada early and stay put.

2. Museum Tembakau Jember

This is a tobacco museum on Jl. Kalimantan No.1 in Krajan Timur, Sumbersari, and it speaks directly to what Jember is known for: its tobacco farms. It is the most specific of the town's museums and the obvious first stop for anyone curious about the crop behind the local economy.

It opens Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:00, so it does not fit a weekend visit. Pair it with Museum Huruf Jember, which is in the same district of Sumbersari.

3. Museum Huruf Jember

A letter or font museum on Jl. Bengawan Solo No.27, Tegal Boto Lor, Sumbersari. It is a small, focused collection rather than a general history museum, and it is worth the time if you have any interest in printing, type or writing.

Its hours are 12:00-22:00, which makes it the easier of the two museums to fit into an afternoon, and it can follow Museum Tembakau Jember on the same weekday.

4. Sukorambi Botanical Garden (Taman Botani Sukorambi)

A botanical garden on Jl. Mujahir, Krajan, Sukorambi, open 07:00-15:30. It is the place in this list to go for greenery and a slower pace, and its early opening makes it the natural first stop of a day.

Because it closes mid-afternoon, do not leave it until late. Combine it with the museums in Sumbersari afterwards, since both are on the same side of the day's plan.

5. Al-Baitul Amien Mosque

The Al-Baitul Amien Mosque near the alun-alun in Patrang district is described as a common religious tourism destination. Visiting gives you the town square and the mosque in one stop, in the Patrang part of the urban area.

Dress and behave as you would at any working place of worship, and check locally before entering, since this is an active religious site rather than a monument.

6. Tape, the local fermented cassava

Jember is known for tape, a traditional food made from fermented cassava. Trying it is a small, cheap way to eat something tied to the place rather than to the region in general.

Buy it where you are already going rather than making a special trip, and ask what else is made from cassava locally if you want to compare.

7. Nusa Barong

The regency includes the island of Nusa Barong, which lies to the south of Java in the Indian Ocean and forms part of the administrative village of Puger Wetan. It is the southern, coastal counterpart to a day spent in town.

It is reached from the south coast, so treat it as a separate outing rather than something to slot between town sights. Arrange the crossing locally and confirm conditions before you commit to a day.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at Sukorambi Botanical Garden on Jl. Mujahir, which opens at 07:00, and give it the early hours before the 15:30 closing becomes a constraint.

Afternoon: Move to Sumbersari. On a weekday you can visit Museum Tembakau Jember between 08:00 and 16:00, then Museum Huruf Jember from 12:00 onwards. If your visit falls on a weekend, the tobacco museum is closed, so go straight to Museum Huruf Jember and use the extra time for the Al-Baitul Amien Mosque and the alun-alun in Patrang.

Evening: Eat tape, the local fermented cassava, and if you are in town in August or September, finish on Jalan P.B. Sudirman or Jalan Gajah Mada for the Jember Fashion Carnaval.
