Things to Do in Purwokerto: Eating and Walking Between Trains

Purwokerto, Indonesia

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in the late afternoon and you will see why Purwokerto works as a stopover: the traffic separates at the General Soedirman Underpass, the Gada Rujak Polo Monument fountain runs on the roundabout above it, and the town square fills with vendors and children as the light goes. This is a transit town on the Jakarta–Yogyakarta rail line rather than a resort, and it rewards travellers who treat it as a place to eat, walk and sleep well between trains.

It suits rail travellers breaking a long journey, anyone heading up to the slopes of Gunung Slamet, and visitors who prefer a working Javanese town to a staged attraction. Most of what is worth your time sits along or near Sudirman Street, with the highland country at Baturraden to the north.

This guide covers the sights and experiences the sources describe, plus a one-day plan that strings them together.

Top things to do in Purwokerto

1. Baturraden

Baturraden lies 15 km north of Purwokerto, an area of typical highland country at the foot of the Gunung Slamet volcano. It is a popular site for local tourism, with a children's playground, hot springs, trekking and camping, and there are two natural hot springs, Pancuran Telu and Pancuran Pitu.

The campground is called Wana Wisata, and hotels, villas and budget hotels are available in the area. Give this the best part of a day rather than an hour, and combine it with the culinary places of North Purwokerto on your way back into town.

2. Purwokerto Town Square (Alun-alun Purwokerto)

Purwokerto's central public square has six banyan trees: one at each corner and two in the centre. The townsfolk often spend their leisure time in the shady square, and it is a common place for children to play, with vendors selling children's toys and local foods. On one side is the regional government building, Kabupaten; on the west side is the Masjid Baitus Salam Mosque; to the east is the old cemetery on Ragasemangsang Road.

The square is open 24 hours and free, and it is at its most active at night, when you can buy food from local vendors and picnic on the grassy field. It sits on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in East Purwokerto, so pair it with a walk along the main street.

3. Bank BRI Museum

Located in the city centre, the Bank BRI Museum was built and dedicated to the bank's founder, R.A. Wiriatmadja. It displays a large collection of coins and money from the VOC era to the present. The institution began as De Purwakertosche Hulp-en Spaar Bank der Inlandsche Bestuur Ambtenaren in 1895 and is the oldest bank in the nation.

It is on Jl. Jend. Soedirman No.57 in Kedungwuluh and is open 09:00–14:00. Entry is free, which makes it an easy stop to combine with the town square on the same stretch of Sudirman Street.

4. General Soedirman Monument and Museum

This monument and museum is dedicated to the Indonesian national hero Jenderal Besar Soedirman. It is on Jl. Patimura No.240a in Pasir Kidul, West Purwokerto, and is open 08:00–16:25.

Entry is Rp3,000 per person. It is on the western side of town, so plan it as a separate stop rather than something to fold into a Sudirman Street walk.

5. General Soedirman Underpass

Finished in 2019, this is a decorated underpass that separates road traffic from the rail tracks, and it is dedicated to General Soedirman. It is worth a look as part of a walk along the main street rather than as a destination on its own.

Go when you are already passing between the town square and the monuments on the eastern side of the centre, and look out for the roundabout above it.

6. Gada Rujak Polo Monument

Finished in 2020, this is a monument on a roundabout just before the underpass, and it has a dancing fountain. It is one of the decorated roundabout monuments the town is known for.

Since it sits directly before the General Soedirman Underpass, the two are best seen together in a single pass along Sudirman Street.

7. Andhang Pangrenan Park

This green park replaced the old bus station and has a playground for kids and a stage for events. It is on Jalan Gerilya in Karangklesem, South Purwokerto, and is open 08:00–22:00.

Entry is Rp5,000 for adults and Rp2,500 for children. It is in the same district as Bulupitu's bus station, which makes it a sensible way to fill time before or after a bus.

8. Balai Kemambang Park

This well-decorated park is mostly visited by families with kids, since it has a playground inside and a small dancing fountain. It is on Jl. Karang Kobar No.9 in Bancarkembar, North Purwokerto, and is open 09:00–17:00.

Entry is Rp5,000 for adults and Rp2,500 for children. It is a daytime stop, so pair it with the northern part of town rather than with an evening at the square.

9. Pangripta Brubahan Park

This local community park has a walkway suitable as a jogging track and is free to enter. It is on Jalan Broebahan in Purwanegara, East Purwokerto, just behind RRI Purwokerto, and is open 24 hours.

Because it never closes, it suits an early run or a late stroll when the rest of the town has quietened down.

10. Satria Park

Another local community park with a walkway suitable for jogging, Satria Park is free and open 24 hours. It is on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in Berkoh, South Purwokerto, next to the General Gatot Subroto Monument.

Combine the two in one stop: see the monument, then use the park's walkway. It is an easy addition to a Sudirman Street itinerary.

11. General Gatot Subroto Monument

This monument is dedicated to the Indonesian national hero Jenderal Gatot Subroto. It stands on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in Berkoh, South Purwokerto, beside Satria Park.

It is a quick look rather than a long visit, so treat it as a marker on a walk south along the main street.

12. Satria Sport Complex

This is the largest sport complex in town, containing a football stadium, tennis courts, a reflection park and a few other venues. It is on Jl. Prof. Dr. Suharso in Purwokerto Lor, East Purwokerto, and is open 07:00–18:00.

Locals usually visit in the morning, especially on Sunday when there is an event called sunday morning (sunmor). Entry is free.

13. Soesilo Soedarman Sport Complex

This complex has a better jogging track and a daily football match played by local football teams. It is on Jl. DR. Soeparno in Grendeng, North Purwokerto, and is open 06:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:00.

Entry is Rp2,000 on weekdays and Rp3,000 on Saturday and Sunday. The split hours mean you should choose a morning or late-afternoon slot rather than turning up in the middle of the day.

14. Wijayakusuma Golf Course

The only golf course in Purwokerto, it is relatively small but very affordable. It is on Jalan Profesor Doktor Bunyamin No.10 in Bancarkembar, North Purwokerto, behind Wijayakusuma Military Hospital.

Because it is small, it works as a half-day activity rather than a full one, and it sits in the same northern district as Balai Kemambang Park.

15. Adipura Monument

This monument with a fountain was dedicated as a trophy for Purwokerto winning an Adipura Award, an award for city cleanliness. It is one of several decorated monuments on the town's roundabouts.

It is a passing glance rather than a stop in itself, so note it while moving through the centre rather than planning around it.

If you only have one day

Morning. Start at Balai Kemambang Park when it opens at 09:00, then continue to the Bank BRI Museum on Jl. Jend. Soedirman No.57, which opens at 09:00 and is free. Both are daytime-only, so they belong in the first half of the day.

Afternoon. Walk the Sudirman Street stretch: the General Soedirman Underpass and the Gada Rujak Polo Monument with its dancing fountain on the roundabout just before it. Continue south to Satria Park and the General Gatot Subroto Monument beside it, then take in the Adipura Monument as you pass through the centre.

Evening. Finish at Purwokerto Town Square, which is open 24 hours and free. Buy food from the local vendors, find a spot on the grassy field, and let the square do the work of ending the day.
