Things to Do in Nanchong

Nanchong, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand at the roundabout at Five Star Garden in Shunqing District and five roads fan out in front of you, each one leading deeper into the city. This is the proverbial heart of Nanchong, and it is where a visit naturally begins.

Nanchong suits travellers who are working their way through northeastern Sichuan and want a base with real food culture, a river crossing it from north to south, and easy rail links onward. The Jialing River runs through the prefecture, and the surrounding countryside is hilly, with springs and autumn the more comfortable seasons for walking.

1. The Ancient City of Lang Zhong

The Ancient City of Lang Zhong is the strongest single stop in the prefecture. Its architectural style embodies the ancient Chinese view of feng shui, and the checkerboard street pattern blends northern and southern building traditions into groups described as "semi-pearl", "character" and "multi" in form. Within the old city are eight national key cultural relics protection units, among them Zhangfei Temple, Yong'an Temple, Five Dragons Temple, Tengwang Pavilion, Guanyin Temple, Baba Temple, Dafo Temple and Chuanbei Dao Gongyuan.

It sits on Langshui Road in Langzhong City. Opening hours run 08:00–18:30 from May 1 to December 30, and 09:00–18:00 from December 31 to April 30 of the following year. Entry is ¥120. Because the site is large and the relics are spread through the streets, give it the better part of a day rather than an afternoon.

2. Zhu De's hometown Linlang Mountain scenic spot

This national 5A tourist attraction lies in Saddan Town, Yilong County, and takes "Zhu De Spirit" as its theme with red culture as the main line and natural ecology as the background. It is divided into four sections: the entrance area, the memorial area, the folk custom area and the background area, which together reproduce the life scene of Zhu De's youth. The core is made up of Zhu De's former residence, his birthplace and the Zhu De Comrade's former Residence Memorial Hall.

It is also a national patriotic education demonstration base and a national museum, and is among the first batch of free open units. Hours are 09:00–17:30. Tickets run ¥10–59. The folk custom and background sections reward slower walking, so arrive in the morning rather than late in the day.

3. Jialing first Sangzi scenic spot

Located in Peng'an County, this national 4A tourism area is planned along both banks of the Jialing River across more than 20 square kilometres, divided into three sections and four-function film with thirteen districts. It gathers what the source calls the most classic poetry and painting countryside in the Jialing River basin, and is associated with the birthplace of Bashu culture and the ancient romantic love holy place. Peng'an is the hometown of Sima Xiangru, a scholar of the Han Dynasty.

It is open all day and free to enter. Because the layout follows the river, plan to walk one bank and cross rather than trying to cover both sides at once.

4. Lingyun Mountain Scenic Spot

In Gaoping District, this national 4A level tourist attraction is one of the key scenic spots in the Jialing River ecological and cultural tourism boutique area. It is a national forest park and is described as the best feng shui tourist attraction in China, as well as a national youth outdoor sports camp, a provincial geopark and a cultural industry demonstration base in Sichuan Province.

Hours are 08:30–17:30 from May 1 to October 31, and 08:30–17:00 from November 1 to April 30. Entry is free. The shorter winter window means an early start is worthwhile if you visit outside the summer months.

5. Nanchong White Tower Park

Treat it as an easy half-day in the city itself rather than a trip out of town.

Combine it with the religious sites below, since the White Pagoda and the temples around Nanchong belong to the same circuit of stops.

6. The religious sites of Nanchong

The source lists Big Like Mountain, Yuntai Temple, Big Buddha Temple, Yongan Temple, Jianhao Temple, Tiangong Yuan, Baba Temple, Mosque, Gospel Hall and Catholic Church, covering the five major religions of Taoism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Catholicism. Also named are Nanchong White Pagoda, Yingshan White Pagoda, south Yuji Mountain, south Li Feng Guan, and Shenba brick Pagoda.

Because these are spread across the prefecture, choose two or three that sit near the other places you are already visiting rather than attempting all of them.

7. The artificial landscapes

Machi Beach, Shengzhong Reservoir, Xichong Red Flag and Baltan are listed as artificial reservoir landscapes. They are the counterpoint to the old towns and temples, and suit a slower day on the water or along a reservoir shore.

These are outdoor stops, so fit them into the sunnier spring months, when days tend to be brighter and warmer than in autumn.

8. The Nanchong new eight views

The source names a set of eight views: Xishan, likened to a "sleeping beauty"; North Lake; Qingquan temple; Wan tower, associated with the phrase "broken ten thousand volumes"; Kui Pavilion; the North Sichuan Travel Office site; Ruiqing former residence; and old Jun Taoist temple.

These are scattered, so use them as a menu for filling spare half-days around the larger sights rather than as a single route.

9. Guokui stuffed with jelly

Guokui stuffed with jelly (锅盔灌凉粉) has a crispy outer skin and a filling of Sichuan jelly, and tastes spicy and delicious. It is the most portable of the local foods and works well as a snack between stops.

Order it fresh, since the contrast between the crisp shell and the cool jelly is the point.

10. Nanchong rice noodles

Nanchong rice noodles (南充米粉) are noted for a rich variety of rice noodles and a clever combination of seasonings. They are the everyday bowl of the city and the easiest way to eat like a local.

Have them for breakfast, when the seasoning is the focus rather than a side note to a larger meal.

11. Shunqing Mutton Rice Noodles

Shunqing Mutton Rice Noodles (顺庆羊肉粉) are made with rice noodles as fine as silk and smooth in texture, while the mutton soup exudes a rich aroma. This is the version to seek out in Shunqing District, the downtown area.

Pair it with a walk around Five Star Garden, which sits at the centre of the district.

12. Steamed buns with white sugar

Steamed buns with white sugar (白糖蒸馍) are naturally fermented and carry only the aroma of wheat, without the alkaline taste of ordinary steamed buns. They are plain by design, which makes them a good companion to the spicier dishes above.

Buy them to eat alongside noodles or cold noodles rather than on their own.

13. Yingshan Cold Noodles

Yingshan Cold Noodles (营山凉面) are golden in colour and described as delicious in appearance, aroma and taste, and refreshing. They are the lightest option on the local food list.

They suit the long, hot and humid summers, when a cold bowl is more appealing than a hot one.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at Five Star Garden in Shunqing District, the roundabout at the heart of the city, and have a bowl of Shunqing Mutton Rice Noodles or Nanchong rice noodles nearby before setting out.

Afternoon: Give the middle of the day to The Ancient City of Lang Zhong on Langshui Road, walking the checkerboard streets and the national key cultural relics protection units within it, including Zhangfei Temple, Yong'an Temple, Five Dragons Temple, Tengwang Pavilion, Guanyin Temple, Baba Temple, Dafo Temple and Chuanbei Dao Gongyuan.

Evening: Return to the city and close the day at Nanchong White Tower Park, then eat Guokui stuffed with jelly or Yingshan Cold Noodles for something lighter after a long afternoon on your feet.
