Things to Do in Yunfu: Mountains, Caves and Old Villages of Yunfu

Yunfu, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand at the foot of Longshan in Xinxing County and the smell of incense drifts down through the trees from a temple founded in the Tang dynasty. Yunfu rewards travellers who are willing to move between its mountains, caves and old villages rather than expecting everything in one compact centre.

The city suits people who like karst scenery, temple history and quiet rural roads, and who are comfortable planning around a spread-out prefecture.

1. Guo'en Temple

Guo'en Temple sits at the foot of Longshan (Dragon Mountain) in Liuzu Town, Xinxing County. Its name means "temple of national mercy", and it is also known as Longshan Temple. It is a large temple covering more than 10,000 m², built in the year 683 during the Tang dynasty.

Give it a generous block of time rather than treating it as a quick stop, since the scale of the complex is the point. It pairs naturally with the rest of a day in Xinxing County.

2. Panlong Cave

Panlong Cave is a long karst cave named after the "coiled dragon" of ancient Chinese legend. The name is the reason to go in with the right expectations: this is a cave visit built around a legend and its rock formations.

It is one of the city's major attractions, so it works well as an anchor for a day out.

3. Dayunwu Mountain

Dayunwu Mountain stands in Yun'an District at an altitude of 1,140 m. It is the northeastern main peak of the Yunwu Mountain Range, which runs northeast-oriented, and it is perpetually shrouded in clouds and mist.

The high mountains and misty clouds produce fine tea, and in the small villages around it, villagers mostly grow tea for their own consumption. There are also protected animals such as pangolins and protected plants like tree ferns. Wear proper footwear and allow for the altitude and the mist.

4. Dawan Ancient Buildings

Dawan Ancient Buildings in Dawan Town, Yunan County, is a group of old villages built around the end of the Qing dynasty. Entry is free.

This is a slow walk rather than a single sight, so set aside time to wander. It sits in Yunan County, which makes it a sensible pairing with Zhanggong Temple.

5. Zhanggong Temple

Zhanggong Temple is a small Ming dynasty temple on Chengdong Road in Liantan Town, Yunan County. It was built in 1587 and is one of the relatively well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming dynasty in the city.

It was built by local people to pay homage to Zhang Yuanxun, the general of Guangdong during the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty. Its decorations, including poetry, colourful lyrics, painted murals, pictures, overhanging eaves and dragon ridges, embody the folk culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Entry is free, and it combines well with Dawan Ancient Buildings.

If you only have one day

Evening: If you have the energy and your own transport, finish with the old villages of Dawan Ancient Buildings in Dawan Town, Yunan County, which are free to enter.
