Things to Do in Baoji: Bronzeware and Riverfront Sights

Baoji, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Binhe Avenue in Weibin District and the Wei River runs beside you, with the Chinese Stone Drum Park and the Baoji Bronzeware Museum sharing the same stretch of riverfront. Baoji sits in a valley ringed by hills on three sides, the point where the Qin Mountains and the old Northern Silk Road routes meet, and most travellers pass through it by train on the way between Xi'an and China's west.

The city suits travellers who care about bronze-age archaeology, Taoist and Buddhist sites, and mountain walking, and who are willing to take a long-distance bus or a local bus to reach the best of it. Several of the strongest sights sit outside the urban districts, in Fufeng County, Mei County and Qishan County, so plan around transport rather than around a single neighbourhood.

This guide covers the museums, temples and parks worth your time, plus how to string the best of them into a single day.

Top things to do in Baoji

1. Baoji Bronzeware Museum

This museum in the Chinese Stone Drum Park on Binhe Avenue, Weibin District, holds more than 120,000 pieces of cultural relics, primarily of Zhou dynasty descent. It is the single best introduction to why this valley matters archaeologically, and it sits in the same park as the stone drums, so you can pair the two without moving far.

Take bus no. 10 from Baoji Railway Station, or bus nos. 8, 17, 20, 28, 41, 49, 61 or 71. Opening hours are 09:00-17:00 with no entry after 16:30, closed on Mondays except when Monday is a public holiday. You are expected to make an appointment on the museum's WeChat account before visiting. Entry is free.

2. Famen Temple

In Fufeng County, this Buddhist temple is recorded as far back as 67 AD and contains a 13-story brick pagoda. The pagoda collapsed in the rain in August 1981 and revealed a 1,000-year-old underground vault filled with 2,400 treasures from the Tang and earlier dynasties, including gold and silver utensils, glazed wares, porcelains, pearls, precious stones, textiles and religious items. The greatest of them is a finger bone of Buddha offered to the Emperor of China during the Tang dynasty.

Buses to the temple leave from Baoji Bus Station, and there are also direct buses from Xi'an's Chengxi (City West) Bus Station departing at 09:00 and 16:30 daily. Opening hours are 08:30-17:30. Entry is ¥100, or ¥158 including return bus fare.

3. Mount Taibai National Forest Park

A national park centred on Mount Taibai, the highest mountain in the Qinling range, reached via Tangyu Town in Mei County. The mountain still carries traces of roadways built during the Three Kingdoms period, generally unusable now but preserved because they were made by building wood plank bridges along the mountainside.

Take a long-distance bus from Baoji Bus Station to Mei County, then bus no. 203 or 204 to the Mount Taibai Visitor Center. General hours are 08:00-18:00, but the ticket office closes at 15:00, the cable cars stop at 18:00 and the park bus stops at 19:00, so arrive early. Entry is ¥90 between March and November and ¥54 between December and February; a round trip on the park bus costs ¥60.

4. Wuzhangyuan Zhuge Liang Temple

About 20 km south of Qishan County, this temple sits on the Wuzhangyuan Plateau overlooking the Wei River and commemorates Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions. Built during the Yuan dynasty and expanded in the Ming and Qing, it preserves a grand temple gate, side halls, Bell and Drum Towers and a main hall. Look for the "Five Zhang Autumn Wind" plaque above the Hall of Offerings, Zhuge Liang's Memorial of Military Expeditions carved in stone, and a pavilion displaying the Eight Trigrams.

In the main hall a statue of Zhuge Liang sits flanked by statues of notable Shu generals. To the southwest is his symbolic tomb, and nearby the Meteor Pavilion houses a meteorite said to have fallen shortly before his death. Opening hours are 08:30-17:30.

5. Jintai Taoist Temple

A major Taoist temple dedicated to Zhang Sanfeng, the legendary Taoist monk credited with the invention of Tai Chi, on Jintai Lane in Jintai District. It is about 900 metres north of Baoji Railway Station, which makes it the easiest of the city's religious sites to fold into a travel day.

Opening hours are 09:00-17:00 and entry is ¥10.

6. Jiulong Mountain Scenic Area

In Chencang District, Jiulong Mountain is known for rugged terrain and a blend of peaks, forests, streams and caves, with nine distinct peaks encircling one another. Sites within the area include the Jade Emperor Cave, Wuliang Cave, Yaowang Cave, Sanxian Cave, Baxian Cave, Chuantian Cave, Lotus Peak, Yaotao Cliff and Leishen Pool. The ancient architectural complex is a designated provincial cultural heritage site and has long been a centre of Buddhist and Taoist culture in western Guanzhong.

Opening hours are 08:00-17:30. It suits travellers who want a full day outdoors rather than a quick stop.

7. Honghegu Forest Park

In Mei County, this park spreads more than 80 attractions across four developed areas. You will find religious cultural relics including Jinglin Temple, Xiandong Temple, Jade Emperor Pavilion and Guanyin Cliff, alongside gorges, waterfalls and pools. Highlights include the ancient Taigong Stone Boat, the Twin Caves Water Curtain, Panlong Bay and Doumu Waterfall.

Its distinguishing feature is the Quaternary glacial remains of Taibai Mountain, including a glacier stone sea that can be seen without climbing to high altitude. The "Red River Red Cliffs" and "Doumu Peak Reflections" are two of the Taibai Eight Views, and "Taibai Snow in June" is one of the Guanzhong Eight Views. The Lingyun Plank Road, an iron walkway built along towering cliffs, is the standout walk. Opening hours are 09:00-16:30.

8. Baoji Folk Customs Museum

On Xibao Road in Weibin District, this is the city's dedicated folk customs collection and a useful counterweight to the bronzes if you want a sense of local life rather than ancient ritual objects.

Take bus nos. 10, 17, 20, 22, 28, 33, 41, 46, 61 or 71. Opening hours are 09:00-17:00 with no entry after 16:30, closed on Mondays except when Monday is a public holiday. Entry is free.

9. Bei Puo

North of the city, Bei Puo is a giant hill made of loess with a panoramic view over Baoji and a landscape dotted with small farming villages that offer local cuisine. It works well as a half-day when you want the valley in front of you rather than another interior.

Combine it with a meal in one of the villages rather than eating back in the city.

10. Jialing Jiang Fountainhead

South of Baoji, where the plank road into the Qin Mountains begins, the Jialing Jiang Fountainhead offers small waterfalls and forests. It is a natural site rather than a built attraction, and pairs naturally with the mountain scenery of the same southern approach.

Treat it as a walking stop on a day when you are already heading south, not as a standalone trip.

11. Tomb and temple of Yandi

The Baoji area was home to the legendary Yandi, a forefather of the Han Chinese. His tomb is in the southern part of the city and his temple is in the north, so the two are separate visits rather than one stop.

If you are already heading north to Bei Puo, the temple fits the same direction of travel.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at the Baoji Bronzeware Museum on Binhe Avenue, arriving for the 09:00 opening and remembering that entry stops at 16:30 and the museum closes on Mondays. Book your slot on the museum's WeChat account beforehand. Walk the Chinese Stone Drum Park afterwards, since it is the same site.

Afternoon: Take bus no. 10 back towards Baoji Railway Station and continue to Jintai Taoist Temple on Jintai Lane, about 900 metres north of the station, open 09:00-17:00. If time allows, add the Baoji Folk Customs Museum on Xibao Road, which is free and open until 17:00 with no entry after 16:30.

Evening: Head north to Bei Puo for the panoramic view over the city and eat in one of the farming villages on the loess hill, which serve local cuisine.
