1. China Ceramics and Glazed Glass Museum
This is one of the largest and most comprehensive modern museums in China devoted to ceramics and glazed glass, and the obvious first stop in Zibo given how central both crafts are to the city. It spans four floors, with two galleries on the first floor and around six on each of the remaining floors, covering ceramic artworks from the Neolithic era to the present alongside glassware from around the world.
Admission is free but requires an advance reservation, up to seven days ahead including the reservation day. It is closed on Mondays except public holidays, and last entry is at 17:30. Store bags or large items at the front desk and pick up a guide map on arrival; bus routes 79, 92, 136 and 160 serve the Huaguang Road address.
2. Qi Heritage Museum
In Linzi District, this museum holds galleries about the ancient Qi State that once controlled half of modern Shandong Province. A second, paid gallery contains relics from an ancient royal tomb, described as very much like the Terracotta Warriors in miniature, and there is material on the ancient football-like sport cuju.
It is closed on Mondays except Chinese public holidays, with no entry after 16:30. Groups must reserve at least three days in advance and arrive at the appointed time; casual guests cannot reserve. Only the Dongsun Warring States Tomb Museum charges admission, at ¥10. Bus routes 84, 200, 237 and k237 stop nearby.
3. Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City and the Art Museum
Zhoucun was one of China's four "dry ports" alongside Foshan, Jingdezhen and Zhuxian, and its major trade streets — Dajie, Sishijie and Yinzijie — are well preserved. Walking them is the clearest way to read Zibo's role in the Silk Road trade.
The Art Museum at 23 Yinzishi Street sits near the south gate of the ancient commercial city and is free to enter, which makes it an easy addition to the same walk. Combine the two rather than treating them as separate outings.
4. Haidai Tower Zhongshuge Bookstore
Haidai Tower, in Qisheng Lake Park in Zhangdian District, is a cultural landmark built around the essence of Shandong's traditional culture, and the bookstore inside it is the reason to go in. For the best daytime photographs, head to the peak of Shangxian Bridge, where you can frame the tower across the water.
The tower lights up around 18:30 and goes dark at 23:00, so arrive a little early if you want to catch the moment it comes on. The light show starts after 20:00. Summer hours begin on 1 May, and the B1 level is where to look for souvenirs.
5. Zibo Shi Wenhui taoci Bowuguan
Also known as the Zibo Wenhui Ceramics Museum, this is a large ceramics museum in central Zibo with a number of galleries holding examples of Chinese ceramics both ancient and modern. The central hall is the highlight, with particularly interesting ceramic figures of Chinese heroes, real and fictional.
It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, and is closed on Mondays except national public holidays. It sits at the south end of West Tenth Road in the Economic Development Zone.
6. Pusong Ling Ancient Home
On Liaozhai Road in Zichuan District, this is the home of the Qing-dynasty author of famous horror stories and one of the most famous people associated with Zibo. It is a small, focused stop rather than a full afternoon, and best paired with other Zichuan District sights.
7. Linzi Ancient Chinese Vehicle Museum
Built on both sides of and underneath a motorway, this museum in Qiling Town, Linzi District, holds galleries with information about and full-scale replicas of chariots from various periods of Chinese history. The chariots are the draw, and the setting is genuinely unusual.
An archaeological site displaying slain horses from an ancient Qi State royal tomb sits directly under the motorway, which explains the isolated location. Admission is ¥30.
8. Yuanshan National Forest Park
Southwest of Boshan District, this is the only national forest in Zibo. It consists of five scenic zones, including the great wall of the Qi Kingdom, the grass skiing field, the Dinosaur Valley and the folk custom garden.
Because the zones are spread out, decide which ones you want before you arrive rather than trying to cover all five.
9. Thousand Buddha Temple
Across from the north gate of Zhoucun Ancient Commercial City, this temple offers a stark contrast to the bustle of the marketplace. Its modest exterior is easy to overlook, but inside is a charming garden surrounded by six grand halls, forming a historic architectural complex where Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism coexist.
It opens from 08:30 to 17:00. Pair it with your Zhoucun walk, since it is directly opposite the north gate.
10. Zhengjue Temple
In Anshang Village, Boshan District, on Lianhua Mountain, Zhengjue Temple is a serene spot suited to a calm break in the middle of a travel day. The traditional Buddhist architecture and peaceful setting make it worthwhile, and entry is free.
Afterwards, head to Qingmei Residence Boshan Halal Restaurant nearby, a local favourite known for its crispy beef jerky and sesame beef.
11. Red Leaf Persimmon Rock Tourism Area
In Heshangfang Village, Boshan District, this tourist area sits in a valley surrounded by mountains with a rural atmosphere. Scenic buildings covered in blue stone masonry and red tiles are built into the mountainside, and well-preserved Qing buildings remain.
Autumn is the most beautiful time here, with the best viewing days from 1 September to 30 November. It opens from 08:00 to 16:30 and admission is ¥10. From the Binlai Expressway Boshan exit, head 100 metres westbound.
12. Badaju Pedestrian Street
A pleasant spot for a leisurely stroll in Zhangdian District, with old buildings on both sides of the street, plenty of authentic Zibo snacks and unique handmade craft shops. The area is not large, but the winding alleys and lively crowd make it worth an hour or two, and there are many long-established stores.
If it is your first time in Zibo, this is a good place to start.
13. Xiaofu River Wetland Park
Known for its expansive water surfaces and natural wetland landscapes, this park in Zhangdian District is popular with nature lovers and families. It has walking and biking trails and seasonal fountain shows.
Check the music fountain schedule in advance if you want to be sure of catching one, and watch out for mosquitoes.
14. Tangku Cultural and Creative Park
Converted from the original Mashang Warehouse of Zibo's Sugar and Wine Station, a former national sugar reserve, Tangku takes its name from the storage facility it once was. Inside you will find a cat café, coffee shop, ceramics shop, bakery, tea house, a crayfish restaurant and a handmade goods store.
Admission is free, though a special festival market may require a ticket of around ¥10. The location is a bit out of the way — roughly a 30-minute bike ride or 20 minutes by car from the train station — and parking is very limited at weekends, so avoid driving in. Markets run only on weekends and holidays, typically from 14:00 to 20:00, with stalls selling handmade items, milk tea and cakes; you can apply for a stall yourself through Tangku's WeChat public account for a small daily fee, though wholesale and finished goods are not accepted.
