Stand on the reconstructed platform of Chaorantai at 64 Beiguan Road and you are standing where Su Shi expanded the old city wall in 1075, looking out over a county-level city in southeast Shandong that most travellers pass through on the road between Qingdao and Weifang. The draw here is not a single monument but a pairing: one of China's richest dinosaur fossil grounds and a small set of historic sites tied to the Song and Qing dynasties.
Zhucheng suits travellers who are already in Shandong and want a day or two off the main circuit, particularly those travelling with an interest in palaeontology or in the region's literary and official history. It is about an hour's drive from Qingdao. This guide covers the sights and experiences worth your time, followed by a one-day plan and answers to the questions visitors ask most.
Top things to do in Zhucheng
1. Zhucheng Dinosaur Museum
This museum on Mizhou West Road, inside Dinosaur Park, is the centrepiece of a visit to Zhucheng. Its highlight is the skeleton of a Zhuchengosaurus maximus, a hadrosaur standing 9.1 metres high and 16.6 metres long. The wider area has been an excavation site since 1960, and the world's largest hadrosaurid fossil, found here in the 1980s, is on display in the local museum.
Allow a good half-day and combine it with the rest of Dinosaur Park. The museum is open 09:00-17:00 and entry is ¥60; reach it on bus no. 2, 9 or 16.
2. Zhucheng China Tyrannosaurus Museum
On Zangkejia Road, this museum displays fossils of Zhuchengtyrannus magnus, a species first discovered at this very site. If you have any interest in theropods, this is the companion visit to the Dinosaur Museum and the reason to give Zhucheng a full day rather than a few hours.
Opening hours are 09:00-17:00 and entry is ¥25. Take bus no. 3, 215 or 216 to Lübiao; the museum is about 2.5km south of there, so plan the final leg accordingly.
3. Chaorantai
Chaorantai at 64 Beiguan Road is the foundation of the city wall, built in the Northern Wei Dynasty and expanded by the writer Su Shi in 1075. The original structure was destroyed in 1948 during the Chinese Civil War, and a new Chaorantai was completed at the original site in January 2010.
Entry is free. Opening hours are 08:30-11:30 and 13:30-17:00 from October to April, and 08:30-11:30 and 14:00-17:30 from May to September, with no entry in the last 30 minutes; it is closed on Mondays. Take bus no. 10 or bus K5.
4. Zhucheng Museum
On Heping North Street, this is the place to put the region's history in order, including the bronzes relocated here after their discovery at the Qingyun Temple site in 1978. It pairs naturally with Chaorantai, since both deal with the same stretch of the city's past.
Entry is free. Spring and summer hours are 08:30-11:30 and 14:00-17:30; autumn and winter hours are 08:30-11:30 and 13:30-17:00; closed on Mondays. Bus nos. 7, 11, 12 and K3 serve it.
5. The Zhucheng section of the Great Wall of Qi
The ruins of the Great Wall of Qi in Zhucheng are fairly well preserved, which makes this the most rewarding of the outdoor sites for anyone willing to travel beyond the city centre. The coordinates most often used are for the ruins near Hanjiagou Village, and more ruins may be found near Bogeya Village.
This is best reached by car or taxi, so build it into a half-day rather than trying to slot it between two city sights.
6. Qingyun Temple
In Qingyun Village, Danjiadianzi Community, Linjiacun Town, this temple faces north and south and has three main halls of brick and wood with blue bricks and black tiles. The roof carries many ridge beasts and dragons, the gate is more than three metres high, and the pillars bear carved couplets. The temple was demolished during the Cultural Revolution, leaving only a thousand-year-old ginkgo tree to the south, and has since been rebuilt.
It is open 09:00-21:00, and the long evening window makes it a reasonable late stop. There is no public transport in the area, so it is best reached by car or taxi.
7. Zhucheng Zoo
On the west side of Dongsu Village in Mizhou Subdistrict, this is a young zoo, founded in 2017, with African lions, Siberian tigers, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, camels, deer, bears and other animals, plus a set of amusement rides. It is the most straightforward option if you are travelling with children.
It is open 08:30-17:30. Standard entry is ¥70, with free entry for children under 1.2 metres and seniors over 70. Take bus no. 215, 216, 207, 208 or K3 to Zhujia Village; the zoo entrance is about 1km east of the bus stop.
8. A walk on Changshan Mountain
If you want time on foot rather than in museums, a walk on Changshan Mountain is the recommended choice in the area. Treat it as a half-day outing and check conditions before setting out.
9. The God of Wealth Festival
This festival with local characteristics is held on the 22nd day of the seventh lunar month and reflects people's wish to become richer. If your dates are flexible, timing a visit around it adds a local occasion to the trip.
If you only have one day
Morning: Start at the Zhucheng Dinosaur Museum on Mizhou West Road, arriving for the 09:00 opening so you have time with the Zhuchengosaurus maximus skeleton and the rest of Dinosaur Park.
Afternoon: Continue to the Zhucheng China Tyrannosaurus Museum on Zangkejia Road, open 09:00-17:00, to see the Zhuchengtyrannus magnus fossils at the site where the species was first discovered. If time allows afterwards, head to Chaorantai at 64 Beiguan Road, which is free and open until 17:00 or 17:30 depending on the season, with no entry in the last 30 minutes.
Evening: If you have a car or taxi, finish at Qingyun Temple in Linjiacun Town, which stays open until 21:00. Otherwise, stay in the city and visit Zhucheng Museum on Heping North Street earlier in the day instead, noting that it is closed on Mondays.
