Stand on the stone bank at Taierzhuang Ancient Town as the evening lanterns come on and you understand why Zaozhuang's story is a canal story: water streets, old wharfs and bridges strung with light. The city spreads across Shizhong, Xuecheng, Shanting, Yicheng, Tai'erzhuang and Tengzhou, and its sights range from a walled canal town to forested peaks and lake wetlands.
Zaozhuang suits travellers who like their history tied to landscape, who will trade a polished resort strip for a mountain stairway or a lotus marsh, and who are happy to build a day around one or two substantial stops. This guide covers the sights and experiences worth your time, plus how to string the best of them into a single day.
Top things to do in Zaozhuang
1. Taierzhuang Ancient Town
Taierzhuang Ancient Town in Tai'erzhuang District is the anchor of a visit: ancient rivers, ancient wharfs and a Chinese water-town layout, with the Taierzhuang War Memorial Hall and a cross-strait exchange base among the sights inside. It is the clearest expression of the canal culture that shaped the city.
Come on a holiday or a weekend night, when the lantern display is at its best; between 16:30 and 22:00 there are light shows, projection shows, fire dragon and steel performances, and shadow puppet shows to watch or join. The site is open 08:00-17:30, with tickets at ¥118 per adult and ¥59 for children and students. To reach it, take B1 bus rapid transit from the Zaozhuang high-speed railway station, get off after 8 stops at the Fengming Lake transfer station, transfer to Bus B10 at Fengminghu Station, and get off after 5 stops at the Taierzhuang Ancient City Parking Lot.
2. Baodugu National Forest Park
Baodugu is a mountain peak in Shanting District and a national forest park. The mountain is steep as a wall, and the path to the top is a single stone path about 600 metres high with thousands of steps, which makes it the pick for travellers who enjoy hiking.
It is open 08:00-18:00, and the adult ticket is about ¥50, with free admission for students holding student ID cards, children under 1.2 metres, military personnel and the elderly. To get there, take BRT Bus T1 from Zaozhuang Station to the Bus Center Station, then transfer to Bus 131 at Zaozhuang Bus Center Station and get off at Baodugu Bus Station.

In Binhu Town, Tengzhou City, this area holds a very large expanse of wild lotus and reeds, along with purple water chestnuts and cattails. It is recommended in summer and autumn: summer for masses of wild red lotus, autumn for wide reed ponds and waterside scenery.
Weishan Lake itself, also reached at Binhu Town, is the largest lotus viewing place in East China and includes Panlong Island and Xiaoli Village, the Aquatic Botanical Garden, the Wetland Drifting Garden, the Lotus Boutique Garden and the Wetland Museum. Pair the two in one outing, since they sit in the same lakeside area.
4. Zaozhuang Museum
The museum holds three basic exhibitions: the Zaozhuang historical cultural relics display, a special exhibition of cultural relics unearthed from the tombs of Xiaozhu nobles, and the Han portrait stone gallery. If you want the history behind the canal town and the coal-mining years, this is where to start.
