Things to Do in Dezhou: A Sultan's Tomb and Dezhou's Quiet Streets

Dezhou, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Dongfanghong East Road in Decheng District and you are a short walk from the tomb that gives Dezhou its place in maritime history: the resting place of a sultan who died here in 1417 on his way home from the Yongle Emperor's court. Few cities of this size carry that kind of story, and it sits quietly beside ordinary streets.

Dezhou suits travellers breaking a Beijing–Shanghai high-speed rail journey, or anyone using the city as a base for the surrounding counties, where the temples, parks and forest landscapes are spread out. This guide covers the sights the sources describe, with practical notes on timing and what to pair with what.

Top things to do in Dezhou

1. Tomb of Sultan Paduka Pahala of Sulu

Dezhou's biggest historical attraction. The Sultan of Sulu died in Dezhou in 1417 while returning from a tribute mission to the Yongle Emperor, and his tomb is well preserved and has been declared a national heritage site. Descendants of the sultan's Muslim followers still live in the city and are classified as the Hui minority.

Give yourself time to take in the setting rather than treating it as a quick stop. It pairs naturally with the Dezhou Museum, which sits on Dongfanghong East Road in Decheng District.

2. Dezhou Museum

A free museum at 566 Dongfanghong East Road, Decheng District, next door to Dezhou Grand Theater. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:00, with no entry after 16:30, and closed on Mondays. Buses 5, 65, 107, 111 and K1 serve it.

The museum also organises traditional handicraft experience activities, where you can try paper-cutting, embroidery or pottery yourself. Check the day of the week before you set out, since Monday closures catch people out.

3. Haidao Jinshan Temple

In Qingyun County, in the northern suburbs, this is one of the biggest centres of Buddhism in Northern China. The temple was restored and rebuilt in 2004 and the scenic area now includes a Buddhist activity area, a commercial area and a landscape area. The most striking feature is the underground aisle, where the portrait of hell is presented using high technology.

Opening hours are 08:30–16:00. Because it sits well outside the city centre, plan it as the main stop of a half-day rather than squeezing it between other sights.

4. Memorial Hall in the People's Park of Lingxian

Lingxian is the hometown of Dongfang Shuo, adviser during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, and in the Tang Dynasty the calligrapher Yan Zhenqing took office as administrator of the county. The memorial hall in the People's Park preserves materials relating to Dongfang Shuo and stone inscriptions of Yan Zhenqing.

In the same area, part of the ancient city wall of the Tang Dynasty still exists in the south of the region. Combine the two, and note that before the Three Kingdoms formed, Liu Bei was chief of the county here together with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.

5. Quancheng Oleburg Dream World

A large theme amusement park at No. 08, Tourism Road, Yellow River International Ecological City, Qihe County, open 09:00–17:30. It is built around European classic architectural styles and incorporates technology from Europe and the United States, with a full range of rides. Quancheng Polar Ocean World sits to its east.

Tickets are ¥220. Because it is a full-day outing for most visitors, pair it with the Polar Ocean World next door rather than trying to add a city sight on the same day.

6. Dezhou Dongzi Garden Scenic Area

On Dongfanghong East Road, open 08:00–18:00 and free to enter. The Dongzi Reading Station here was built in the Sui Dynasty and destroyed by war during the Republic of China; in 2007 the site was rebuilt as a scenic park. The layout takes Confucian culture as its theme, centred on Dongzi's reading platform, which connects to the Shawang River system.

The buildings are traditional in grey and white tones, in the style of the Han Dynasty, with Dongzi Cultural Street on the west side and an ecological garden on the east. It is an easy, low-cost stop to fold into a day that already includes the museum.

7. Xiajin Old Course of the Yellow River Forest Park

A vast forest landscape of rolling dunes and ancient trees, known as the "Northern Deciduous Fruit Tree Museum", with nearly 30,000 trees more than a hundred years old. Opening hours are 08:30–18:00.

This is a place for walking and slow looking rather than a checklist stop. It sits in Xiajin County, so give it a half-day and combine it with the hot springs nearby.

8. Debai Hot Spring Resort

In Area A of the Old Yellow River Forest Park, Xiajin County, open 09:00–20:30. The development includes a hot spring resort hotel, landscape garden, indoor and outdoor hot springs, an indoor swimming pool and a health centre.

The natural pairing is the forest park itself: walk in the morning, soak in the afternoon. The late closing time means you do not have to rush the forest to make it here.

9. Dezhouchanghe park

On Changhe Avenue, Decheng District, opposite NIO City, and open around the clock. The park takes its name from what Dezhou was called during the Sui and Tang dynasties, and it forms an important part of the city's east–west ecological axis, with a large water surface at its centre.

Because it never closes, it works well as an early-morning or evening walk when other sights are shut.

10. Dezhou People's Park

At No. 1487, Dongfeng Middle Road, Decheng District, southeast of Hualian Commercial Building. It is a large urban park with lawns, lakes, recreational facilities and walking trails, and a good place for a morning walk or a leisurely afternoon.

Come early if you want to see it at its liveliest, when locals use it for morning exercises.

11. Laoling Film Studio

A filming location for film and television productions that has become a tourist destination since opening to the public. It offers an immersive interactive experience, letting visitors walk through the real scenes of film and television dramas.

It sits in Laoling, which is also where the region's Golden Silk Jujubes come from, so the county makes a natural day trip.

12. Laoling Shiguang

A cultural park converted from an old factory of the last century, in Laoling. It draws both local and foreign visitors and works as a companion stop to the film studio on the same county outing.

Pair the two in one trip rather than treating either as a standalone destination.

13. Jiurushan Scenic Area

A scenic area with mountains, forest and lake, plus facilities for visitors to rest and take in the views. It rewards a slower pace than the city parks.

Bring what you need for a few hours outdoors, since the appeal here is the landscape itself.

14. Dezhou Dongzi Garden and city parks for a quiet hour

If you have time left over, Dezhou has several parks suited to an unhurried hour: Paradise Park, open around the clock, with vegetation, lakes, walking trails and children's play facilities; Water Conservancy Park, open 09:00–17:00 and free, built around lakes, fountains, artificial rivers and waterfalls; and Century Park, open 06:00–18:00, with modern landscaping, art installations and recreational facilities that make it popular with families and younger visitors.

These are best treated as filler between bigger sights or as an evening wind-down, not as the reason for your trip.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at the Tomb of Sultan Paduka Pahala of Sulu, Dezhou's biggest historical attraction, then walk or take a short ride to the Dezhou Museum on Dongfanghong East Road. Remember the museum opens at 09:00 and is closed on Mondays.

Afternoon: Continue to the Dezhou Dongzi Garden Scenic Area on the same road, free and open 08:00–18:00, for the Confucian-themed buildings and the reading platform by the water. If energy remains, finish with a stroll in Dezhou People's Park on Dongfeng Middle Road.

Evening: Head to Dezhouchanghe park on Changhe Avenue, which stays open around the clock, for a walk beside the water as the day cools.
