The Yellow River narrows sharply here and pours down in a way that resembles liquid leaving the mouth of a kettle, which is where the name comes from. 2. Guangsheng Temple
Established in the Eastern Han Dynasty in 147 and renamed Guangsheng in 769, the temple was damaged in a major earthquake in 1303 and rebuilt, keeping the architectural style of the Yuan Dynasty through later Ming and Qing repairs. The complex has an Upper Temple and a Lower Temple, with many exquisite sculptures, mainly from the Ming Dynasty.
The highlight is the Feihong Pagoda, the largest and best preserved glazed pagoda in China. 3. Linfen Drum Tower
Also known as Dazhonglou, this square tower was built in the Northern Song Dynasty, roughly 1000 years ago, and has been rebuilt a number of times since, including in 1984. It is supported by 12 wooden pillars each one metre in diameter, and is held together by interlocking wooden pieces rather than nails.
You can climb to the top. The drum on display is not the original, but the bell is some 800 years old. It stands at the centre of a busy roundabout in central Linfen, and routes 601 and 602 of the double-decker sightseeing bus pass through the Gulou area.
4. Yao Temple
Built during the Western Jin Dynasty and renovated in the Tang, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the temple is dedicated to the legendary ruler Emperor Yao. The main structures include the Five Phoenix Palace and Guangyun Hall, which holds a 2.8-metre-tall multicoloured statue of Emperor Yao.
Public buses 3, 11, 22, 30, 201, 239 and 802 stop at Yao Temple Park station, a short walk from the entrance. It opens 08:00–18:00 and admission is 40 yuan.
5. Tiefo Temple
Also called Dayun Temple, this historic Buddhist temple is known for its six-tier glazed pagoda and a colossal iron-cast Sakyamuni Buddha head dating to the Tang dynasty. It sits in Haizibian Alley in Yaodu District and admission is free.

6. Hongdong Dahuaishu Ancestor Memorial Garden
The garden commemorates the Hongdong Great Pagoda Tree migration, which began with the southward relocation of the Song imperial family in the late Northern Song period, peaked during the Hongwu and Yongle reigns of the Ming dynasty, and continued until the mid-Qing dynasty. The Ming-era migration was the largest, most widespread and most organised relocation in Chinese history, lasting about 50 years and involving 1,230 family names.

7. Qianfo Temple
