Stand at the Yellow River's Greatest Roar
Drive west from central Linfen for two to three hours, and you will reach Hukou Waterfall, where the Yellow River narrows sharply and releases all its gathered force in one spectacular pour. The river here resembles liquid flowing from the mouth of a kettle—which is exactly where the waterfall gets its name. It is the largest yellow waterfall in the world and the second largest waterfall in China. The vertical drop may not be extreme, but the concentrated water flow creates powerful sound, mist, and swirling currents that you can feel from close range. Walk Through Temples Where Glazed Towers Catch the Light
Guangsheng Temple sits 17 km northeast of Hongdong Town at the foot of Huoshan Mountain, and its most breathtaking feature is the Feihong Pagoda—the largest and best preserved glazed pagoda in China. This octagonal, 13-storey tower, nearly 500 years old and 47 metres tall, glimmers on sunny days as light reflects off the multi-coloured glazed tiles. Wind chimes dangle from ceramic dragons at the corner of each eave; 114 of them ring in the breeze. The pagoda's eaves feature exquisitely sculpted glazed Buddha figures, birds, beasts, dragons, guardians, and warriors, all still in excellent shape. The temple itself, established in 147 CE during the Eastern Han Dynasty, consists of an Upper Temple and a Lower Temple, with buildings that contain many spectacular Ming Dynasty sculptures.
In the city itself, visit Tiefo Temple (also called Dayun Temple) in Yaodu District, where a colossal iron-cast Sakyamuni Buddha head from the Tang Dynasty sits alongside a six-tier glazed pagoda. And for a quieter encounter with Buddhist art, Qianfo Temple in Hongdong County houses multiple Buddha statues and ancient murals that reveal centuries of Chinese Buddhist craftsmanship.

Climb the City's Ancient Drum Tower and Survey the Basin
Linfen's most iconic structure rises at the center of a busy roundabout in central Yaodu District. The Linfen Drum Tower, also called Dazhonglou, stands 43.75 metres tall—just slightly shorter than the one in Beijing—and holds the distinction of being the second tallest drum tower in China. Built during the Northern Song Dynasty approximately 1,000 years ago, it was rebuilt in 1984, yet retains its original engineering marvel: 12 massive wooden pillars, each one metre in diameter, with no nails holding the structure together, only interlocking wooden pieces. Climb to the top for views across the Linfen Basin. Inside you will find a bell about 800 years old on display, though the drum is a later replacement.

Linfen's deep connection to ancient Chinese history centers on Emperor Yao, the legendary sage-king revered across Chinese tradition. Yao Temple in Yaodu District was built during the Western Jin Dynasty (265–316 AD) and later renovated through the Tang, Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods. Today it occupies about 5.33 hectares and contains more than 100 halls and rooms. Inside the main "Guangyun Hall" stands a 2.8-metre-tall multicoloured statue of Emperor Yao, and the complex includes the striking "Five Phoenix Palace."

About 17 km from Linfen city, Hongdong County holds three attractions that reward a day trip. The Hongdong Dahuaishu Ancestor Memorial Garden commemorates one of history's largest organized population movements: the Hongwu Great Migration of the early Ming Dynasty, which lasted approximately 50 years, involved 1,230 family names, and ultimately affected hundreds of millions of descendants. The garden preserves the memory of this monumental shift in Chinese settlement and culture.
For mountain scenery and folk experiences, Yunqiu Mountain lies south of Linfen in Xiangning County, about 1.5–2 hours by car via the G5 expressway. This national scenic area sits where the Lüliang Mountains meet the Fenwei Graben and features forested mountains, karst landscapes, ancient villages with traditional cave dwellings, and natural ice caves. In summer, the cooler weather on the mountain draws visitors; in autumn, the red-leaf scenery turns the landscape brilliant.
