Things to Do in Panjin: Red Beach and Marshland Sights

Panjin, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

At Red Beach the colour comes from the seaweed itself, not from the light: a flat, saturated red that runs out toward the mudflats of the Liaodong Bay. It is the single image most travellers carry away from Panjin, and it sits inside a much larger marshland that fills twice a year with migrating birds.

Panjin suits travellers who are already in Liaoning and want a coastal stop that is about landscape and wildlife rather than city sightseeing. The places below are spread across the urban districts and the surrounding counties, so plan on transport between them.

This guide covers the sights worth building a day or two around, followed by a one-day route and answers to the questions travellers ask most often.

Top things to do in Panjin

1. Red Seabeach

Red Seabeach (红海滩) is the reason most visitors come. The beach takes its name from seaweed that turns a bright red, and it lies beside a reed marsh. It forms part of a National Nature Reserve area, and rare birds can be found here.

A local delicacy is crabs, and most tours of Red Beach include a chance to sample one. If you would rather go independently, minibuses run to Red Beach Resort from the front of Liaohe Youtian Sport Center on Xinglongtai Street, departing daily at 07:00, 11:00, 15:00 and 17:10 and returning from Red Beach Resort at 06:00, 08:00, 13:00 and 16:00; the minibus costs ¥7 and takes around an hour. From Red Beach Resort you still need a tuktuk, taxi or minibus to reach the beach itself, and bargaining is necessary. The golf carts in the beach area were no longer running as of July 2015, so plan to hire your own vehicle there.

2. Liaohekou State Natural Reserve

Formerly known as Shuangtaihekou State Natural Reserve, this marshland is a natural habitat for a large number of animal species and one of the few breeding grounds for endangered birds such as the red-crowned crane and Saunders' gull. Millions of birds stop here during migration, among them the red-crowned crane, demoiselle crane, white stork, black stork, white-fronted goose, whooper swan and brown goshawk.

This is the place to slow down and watch rather than tick off. Panjin is known as "Home of the Cranes" for these reasons, so bring binoculars and give the marsh more time than you think you need.

3. Golden Silk Beach

Golden Silk Beach (金帛滩) sits on the Bohai Sea and is paired with the clam mound. It is a straightforward coastal stop that works well as a change of scene from the marshland and reed beds.

Combine it with the clam mound in the same outing rather than treating them as separate trips.

4. Liaohe Tablet Forest Park

Liaohe Tablet Forest Park (辽河碑林公园), formerly Hubin Park in Panshan, features the Liaohe Tablets. These stone tablets bear inscriptions of Chinese calligraphy by historical and contemporary artists, showing Chinese scripts from different ages.

It is a quiet, walkable stop and a good counterweight to the coastal sights. The same collection also appears in listings as Liaohe River Forest of Steles (辽河碑林).

5. Panjin Forest Park

Panjin Forest Park (盘锦森林公园) is one of the city's named green spaces and a place to walk among trees rather than reeds or mudflats.

It pairs naturally with the other parks on this list if you are spending a day in the urban districts.

6. Lakeside Park

Lakeside Park (湖滨公园) is a city park and an easy, low-effort stop. It is the kind of place to fold into a half-day rather than a destination in itself.

Note that the former name Hubin Park now belongs to Liaohe Tablet Forest Park in Panshan, so check which one you are heading for before you set out.

7. Zhong Xing Park

Zhong Xing Park (中兴公园) is on Mount Tai Road in Xinglongtai District, reachable by bus numbers 1, 5, 7 or 10 from the train station.

Because it is on a direct bus route from the station, it works well as a first or last stop on a day in the city.

8. Xin Yuan Ecological Park

Xin Yuan Ecological Park (鑫安源生态园) is another of Panjin's named green spaces, focused on ecological display rather than formal landscaping.

Treat it as a relaxed half-day and pair it with one of the other parks nearby.

9. Panjin Equestrian Club

Panjin Equestrian Club (盘锦马术俱乐部) is in Xinglongtai District and offers riding laps. A riding lap of one kilometre is ¥15, with a 7% discount for groups.

It is a short, active stop rather than a full afternoon, so slot it in alongside something else in Xinglongtai District.

10. Clams Kong Scenic Area

Clams Kong Scenic Area (蛤蜊岗风景区) is a named scenic area in the city. It is a coastal stop that fits the same day as the other shoreline sights.

Check locally before travelling out, and combine it with Golden Silk Beach and the clam mound if you are already heading that way.

11. First Sino-Japanese War Martyr Cemetery

The First Sino-Japanese War Martyr Cemetery (中日甲午末战殉国将士墓) is a commemorative site in the city. It is a solemn stop rather than a leisure one.

Give it a quiet half hour and read the inscriptions rather than passing through quickly.

12. The Zhang's Cemetery

The Zhang's Cemetery (张氏墓园) in Dongfeng Town Ye Village is the family cemetery for Marshal Zhang Xueliang.

It sits outside the urban core, so plan it as part of a wider loop rather than a quick detour.

If you only have one day

Morning. Take the early minibus from the front of Liaohe Youtian Sport Center on Xinglongtai Street toward Red Beach Resort, then hire a tuktuk, taxi or minibus for the last stretch to Red Seabeach. Walk the seaweed flats and the neighbouring reed marsh while the light is still low.

Afternoon. Stay in the marshland for Liaohekou State Natural Reserve, where the birdlife is the point. If you have time before the return minibus, sample the local crabs that most tours of Red Beach include.

Evening. Back in the city, unwind at Zhong Xing Park on Mount Tai Road in Xinglongtai District, which is served by buses 1, 5, 7 and 10 from the train station. If you still have energy, the Panjin Equestrian Club is in the same district.

The fare is ¥7 and the journey takes around an hour. From Red Beach Resort you need a tuktuk, taxi or minibus to reach the beach, and bargaining is necessary.

Why is Panjin called "Home of the Cranes"?

The name comes from the birdlife of the marshland. Liaohekou State Natural Reserve is one of the few breeding grounds for endangered birds such as the red-crowned crane and Saunders' gull, and millions of birds of many species stop there during migration.

Decide your dates around the marsh and the beach, then start planning your transport out of the city and back.
