Stand at the Sejila Mountain pass on a clear morning and the shape that resolves out of the haze is Namjagbarwa Peak, its summit at 7,782 metres, with the gorge of the Yarlung Tsangpo dropping away below. Nyingchi sits lower than the rest of the Tibetan plateau, averaging around 3,040 metres, so the forests here are thick, the rivers run fast and the air is easier to breathe than most visitors expect from Tibet.

Basu Lake, also written Basongcuo Lake, is a pristine glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush forests. It is a popular spot for trekking and photography, and is known for its serene beauty and clear waters. It sits in the Basongcuo Lake Scenic Area in Gongbu Jiangda County, and is open from 08:00 to 18:00, with an entry fee of ¥120.
Boat trips are one of the activities available at Pagsum Lake, and the lake is a good place to slow down for a half day rather than rush through.
4. Pagsum Lake
Pagsum Lake is the sacred lake of the Nyingma tradition. It has beautiful scenery, and on the island in the heart of the lake stands a temple called Tsozong Gongba Monastery.
Boat trips are among the things to do here. Allow time on the water as well as on the shore.
5. Medog Nature Reserve
Medog Nature Reserve, in Medog County, is China's largest nature reserve, with the best preserved primitive jungle in its lower reaches. It lies on the southern side of the Himalayas and slopes down from north to south.
It is a long way from Bayi, so treat it as a trip in its own right rather than a stop to add to a packed day.
6. Lulang
Lulang offers beautiful alpine forests, grasslands and flowers, giving a sense of Swiss scenery. Horse riding in the grasslands of Lulang is one of the activities the area is known for.
Pair the grasslands with the forest views on the road towards Bayi, and keep a layer handy since the altitude and weather shift through the day.
7. Peach Blossom Valley
Peach Blossom Valley lies south of Linzhi. Every spring, usually from March to April, thousands of peach blossoms bloom and the whole valley is covered in pink. Visitors can hike, cycle or simply take in the scenery. Entry is free.
Timing is everything here: come during the blooming season, March to April, or you will find the valley without its main attraction.
8. Linzhi Forest Sea
Linzhi Forest Sea, near Bayi, is a forest viewpoint. On a clear day the peak of Mt. Nanjiabawa can be seen from here.
It works well as a shorter stop on a day when cloud is forecast to clear, since the view is the point.
9. The World Cypress King Park
The World Cypress King Park, 13 km from Bayi, is home to a 2,600-year-old cypress tree.

10. Miling Town
Miling Town is a small town near Linzhi, rich in Tibetan culture and traditions, with traditional Tibetan houses, monasteries and local markets. It is open year-round, and best visited from 09:00 to 18:00. Entry is free.
