Things to Do in Xiangyang: The Walls and Temples of Xiangyang

Xiangyang, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on the wall at Linhan Gate and the Han River runs wide and brown below you, with the moat curling around the old city on three sides. This is the south bank, the old Xiangyang; across the water lies Fancheng, and the two halves of the city have faced each other over the river for centuries.

Xiangyang suits travellers who like their history physical — walls you can walk, temples with an active incense burner, a museum where the labels go back to the pre-Qin period. It is also a city of Three Kingdoms storytelling, and much of what you will see is tied to Zhuge Liang and the wars fought over this stretch of the Han River.

This guide covers the sights and experiences worth your time, followed by a one-day plan and answers to the practical questions that come up most often.

Top things to do in Xiangyang

1. Xiangyang Ancient City

The old city south of the Han River is the reason to come. Built during the Western Han dynasty, it is among the best-preserved ancient cities in China, with a wall running about 7.3 km and a moat averaging 180 m wide on three sides. It earned the name "Iron Xiangyang" for its role as a military and administrative centre. Within the walls, look for Zhenhua Gate, Linhan Gate, Zhongxuan Tower and Zhaoming Terrace.

Entry is free and the site is accessible at all hours. Bus lines 6, 29 or 512 to Shizijie Stop leave you about 980 m from the site, so wear shoes you can walk in. Combine the wall with the streets of the old city rather than treating it as a single stop.

2. Gulongzhong Scenic Area

This is the retreat where Zhuge Liang lived in his youth and the setting of the "Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage" and the "Longzhong Plan". Key sites include Zhuge's Cottage, the Hall of Three Visits and the Wuhou Shrine, and the "Ten Views of Longzhong" preserved from the Ming dynasty give the area its shape. It is a national 5A attraction and the strongest single stop for Three Kingdoms history.

It opens 08:00–17:00 and costs ¥82. Take Bus No. 6 to Gulongzhong Tourist Center North Gate Station, then walk about 340 m. Allow a half day; the site is spread out.

3. Zhuge Liang thatched hut

Inside the Gulongzhong scenic area, about 12 km west of the old city, sits the hut where Liu Bei called three times to recruit Zhuge Liang. The hut itself is a replica, based on a much older one from the Yuan dynasty. The wider area holds the academy where he studied, a temple dedicated to him, a cave and a well he used; the temple has been rebuilt many times after fires and expanded roughly once a dynasty.

It opens 08:30–17:00 and costs ¥87. Since it sits within Gulongzhong, plan the two as one outing rather than separate trips.

4. Xiangyang Museum

A national first-class museum founded in 1975, housed in Tang-style architecture with six main exhibition halls running from prehistory to the Qing dynasty. It displays over 4,000 cultural relics — bronzes, ceramics, jade, calligraphy and stone carvings — with inscribed pre-Qin bronzes as the highlight. Come here early in your trip if you want the objects you see elsewhere to make sense.

It is at 1 North Street in Xiangcheng District, near Shizi Street bus stop, served by routes 6, 8, 13, 21, 24, 28, 29, 512, 517, 532, 537, 539, g03 and k11. Opening is 09:00–17:00 with no entry after 16:00, closed Mondays. Entry is free.

5. Tangcheng Scenic Area

A national 4A attraction built as grand Tang-style architectural complexes, including the Triumph Tower, Mingde Gate and Qinglong Temple. It works as a filming location for many productions and stages live performances recreating the Tang dynasty, and nearby shops rent costumes so you can dress up and take photographs.

Day session runs 08:30–17:30 and night session 17:30–22:30; entry is ¥90. The night session is the better choice if you want the architecture lit, and the costume shops are the practical reason to arrive with time to spare.

6. Xiangyang Ancient City Wall Night Tour

A guided night walk on the ancient city wall, running 19:00–21:30 with seasonal variations possible. Dramatic lighting picks out the fortifications and guides tell stories about the city's history during the Three Kingdoms period. The atmosphere is entirely different from the daytime wall.

Because the schedule shifts with the season, check before you build an evening around it. Pair it with dinner in the old city beforehand.

7. Xin Shenyun Hanjiang Cruise

A sightseeing cruise on the Hanjiang River with a ship design inspired by Three Kingdoms culture, three observation decks and modern facilities. The route passes Changhong Bridge, Wolong Bridge and the ancient city walls. Daytime trips are historical and cultural tours; night trips add a light show, along with traditional performances and interactive activities.

It leaves from Longzikou Wharf on Yanjiang Avenue in Fancheng District and runs 09:00–20:00; tickets are ¥78. The night sailing is the one that shows you the wall from the water.

8. Mi Gong Temple

Built in memory of Mi Fu, the calligrapher and painter of the Northern Song dynasty, this temple dates back to the Yuan period and preserves Qing-style architecture. It houses numerous stone inscriptions and rubbings, including reproductions of Mi Fu's works, and is the place to slow down and look closely at traditional Chinese calligraphy.

It is at No. 2 Jiefang Road in Fancheng District, reached by Bus No. 2 to Mi Gong Temple North Station plus a walk of about 206 m. Opening is 08:00–17:30 and entry is ¥25. It sits north of the river, so combine it with a crossing rather than doubling back.

9. Guangde Temple

Built during the Tang dynasty and renamed during the Ming, the temple shows traditional Ming and Qing architectural styles. Highlights are the Mahavira Hall, the Sutra Library and the brick-and-stone Duobao Pagoda, a national protected relic from the Ming period. An ancient ginkgo tree, revered since imperial times, stands on the grounds.

It opens 08:00–18:00 and entry is free. Take Bus No. 512 to Sangu Lukou Station, then walk about 439 m. It is roughly in the same direction as Gulongzhong, so the two fit into one day.

10. Guanjia Lane

A historic street in the Ancient City that mixes tradition with modern culture, built in Ming–Qing style and offering local cuisine, traditional crafts and immersive performances such as Poetic Xiangyang and Chivalrous Xiangyang. It is the easiest place to eat and wander without committing a whole afternoon.

It runs 10:00–22:00 and is free. The lane sits 50 m north of Xiangyang No. 33 Middle School in the Gulou area, which makes it a natural stop after the museum or the wall.

11. Zheng Wu Shan Temple

A small but active Daoist temple run mainly by Daoist nuns. It is a quiet counterweight to the larger sites and worth an hour if you want to see a working temple rather than a restored monument.

Keep your visit short and respectful, and fold it into a day when you are already in the old city.

12. OCT Fantasy Land Scenic Area

A large theme park with amusement rides, themed zones and performances, combining entertainment, cultural elements and leisure facilities. It is the obvious choice if you are travelling with children or want a break from dynastic history.

Day session is 10:00–18:00 and night session 16:00–22:00; entry is ¥128. It is in Wonder Town, OCT Fantasy Resort, Xiangzhou District — a different part of the city from the old town, so give it its own half day.

13. Xiangyang beef noodles

The city's most iconic dish: alkaline noodles in a rich beef and offal broth with braised beef and red oil, often paired with local yellow wine. The cuisine here represents the northern style of Hubei cooking, blending northern and southern flavours and favouring fresh spiciness, braising or steaming, and a finishing oil.

Eat them as locals do, early in the day, and order the yellow wine alongside. Guanjia Lane is a convenient place to try them while you are already exploring the Ancient City.

If you only have one day

Morning. Start at Xiangyang Museum on North Street when it opens at 09:00, before the halls fill, and give the pre-Qin bronzes proper attention. Walk from there into Xiangyang Ancient City and follow the wall past Zhenhua Gate and Linhan Gate, with a look at Zhongxuan Tower and Zhaoming Terrace. Stop at Guanjia Lane for a bowl of Xiangyang beef noodles and the local yellow wine.

Afternoon. Head west to Gulongzhong Scenic Area and the Zhuge Liang thatched hut within it, taking in Zhuge's Cottage, the Hall of Three Visits and the Wuhou Shrine. If time allows on the way back, add Guangde Temple and its Duobao Pagoda.

Evening. Return to the old city for the Xiangyang Ancient City Wall Night Tour, then finish on the water with the Xin Shenyun Hanjiang Cruise from Longzikou Wharf, which passes the ancient city walls, Changhong Bridge and Wolong Bridge under lights.
