- Visit Huangshizhai Scenic Area to see the Boudoir Gate welcoming guests and Five Finger Peak from a vantage point most visitors choose. A cable car brings you to the top, where a circular walking route takes roughly 100 minutes on relatively flat terrain. The view across the valley to Yuanjiajie in the distance frames the scale of the landscape.
- Travel to Yuanjiajie to stand at the first bridge under the sky, a natural stone span that opens to vertiginous views. The name carries the awe the place demands.
- Walk Golden Whip Stream, a more than 4-kilometre route where water runs clear beside your path and the walk feels entirely pleasant. Look for Divine Eagle protecting the whip and Golden Whip Rock as you move through.

- Travel to Sangzhi County west to Maoyan River, which connects Jiutian Cave to Kuzhu Village, a thousand-year-old settlement, and the Kuzhu River Grand Canyon—a corridor the area calls a mysterious canyon. The Jade Emperor Grottoes extend more than 100 kilometres in length. Maoyan River drifting offers a water-based passage through terrain called the Baili Gallery.
Museums and the Sacred in the City Centre
The urban area of Zhangjiajie holds history that reaches back into deep time. Before you leave the built-up core, spend time understanding the place through its collections and oldest structures.
- Visit Zhangjiajie Museum, located at the intersection of Dayong Road and Ziwu Road in Yongding District. Entry is free, and the museum opens from 09:00 to 16:30 daily except Mondays. No tickets are issued after 15:30, so plan your visit earlier in the day.
- Enter Puguang Chan Temple, a Buddhist temple dating to the 15th century on Jiefang Road in Yongding District. The temple operates from 08:00 to 18:00 and charges ¥40 entry. Buses 6, 7, and 8 serve the location.
- Explore Tujiafengqingyuan, a large-scale cultural and natural landscape park covering more than 809 acres only ten minutes' drive from the airport and railway station. The complex integrates tourism, cultural performances, rare exhibitions, accommodation, catering, entertainment and shopping. Hours run 08:30 to 17:00, with ¥80 entry.
Shopping, Food, and the Texture of Daily Life
The city offers neighborhoods where you can taste local food and purchase the things Zhangjiajie is known for. These streets capture the everyday experience alongside the monumental views.
- Walk People's Square Commercial Pedestrian Street, where local snacks concentrate and specialties cluster. The People's Cinema stands nearby.
- Browse Tianzi Street Ethnic Tourism Mall, open 10:00 to 22:00, a shopping plaza focused on specialty products where you can compare offerings across multiple stores. Supermarkets, movie theaters, and restaurants operate inside the same complex, making it a complete destination for both tourists and residents.
Timing Your Visit and Getting There
The three-day ticket for Wulingyuan Scenic Area allows you to leave and return, a flexibility that matters if you wish to divide your time between the main park and outlying attractions. If you stay on the mountain rather than commuting daily from the city, you gain evening and early-morning light when crowds thin. The Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport lies 5 kilometres from downtown and 30 kilometres from Wulingyuan; the G5513 Changsha–Zhangjiajie Expressway connects the city to the provincial capital. Two railway stations serve the city: Zhangjiajie railway station on the Jiaozuo–Liuzhou line and Zhangjiajie West railway station, which opened in 2019 on the Qianjiang–Changde line.
