Things to Do in Hengyang: Temples and River Views

Hengyang, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on the stone torii gate at the foot of Huiyan Peak and the Xiang River bends below you, with the city's towers on one bank and the green ridge of the Hengshan range running north. This is the view that gave Hengyang its old name, Wild Goose City, and it is still the best introduction to the place.

Hengyang suits travellers who are passing through southern Hunan by rail and want a day or two of temples, academies and river scenery rather than a polished resort. The city was badly damaged during the Second Sino-Japanese War, so what survives is a mix of reconstruction and genuinely old sites, and the surrounding countryside holds the sacred mountain of Nanyue.

This guide covers the landmarks, parks and excursions that the sources describe, with practical notes on how to reach each one and what to pair it with.

Top things to do in Hengyang

1. Mount Heng

Mount Heng is one of China's Five Sacred Mountains, a range running some 150 km from Hengyang toward Changsha. Of its cluster of 72 peaks, the best known is Zhurong Peak, and the mountain is regarded as the most scenic of the five sacred mountains.

To reach Mount Heng and Nanyue from Hengyang City, take a bus from Zhongxin or Linghu Bus Station, or take a city bus to Gongxiao Dasha stop where shared taxis and buses continue to Nanyue. The trip takes around 45 minutes. Give it a full day rather than an afternoon.

2. Huiyan Peak

Huiyan Peak sits in the South District of Hengyang City and ranks first among the 72 peaks of Mount Hengshan. Legend holds that wild geese migrating from north to south made a stop here, which gives the peak its name, Delaying Wild Goose Migration. At its foot lies the Misty Rain Pond, which has never dried up and gives its name to one of the Eight Wonders in Hengyang.

Walk through the stone torii gate, past the Banshan Pavilion and up the hundred step scaling ladder to Yanfeng Temple at the summit. Buses 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9 and K1 all reach the peak. It is a natural pairing with Yueping Park, which lies in the same southern part of the city.

3. Shigu Academy

Shigu Academy, also called the Stone Drum Academy, takes its name from Shigu Mountain north of the city. A Tang dynasty scholar built a studio here, and in the Song dynasty it became an academy that drew famous scholars; Emperor Renzong bestowed land and a tablet bearing the academy's name, giving it a national reputation. The original buildings were destroyed in 1944, and the academy, Shigu Park and neighbouring structures have been rebuilt on the ruins.

Bus Lvyou 1 will take you there, or you can walk or take a taxi. Combine it with the Hengyang Museum, which is also in Shigu District.

4. Dongzhou Island

Dongzhou Island lies in the middle of the Xiangjiang River and is rarely visited by tourists, which makes it a quiet place for a slow walk. At the northern tip there is a temple worth seeking out, and the monastery serves vegetarian dishes to visitors. The island also holds the run-down Chuanshan Academy, which once rivalled Shigu Academy and Yuelu Academy in Changsha. The rest is crops, trees and farmhouses.

Ferries cross from the temple side for a small one-way fare, and some local people swim across in summer. Go only if you are not in a hurry.

5. Yueping Park

Yueping Park lies in the south of Hengyang city and covers 21 hectares. Its west side holds the City Museum, with thousands of cultural antiques and relics on display, and a zoo with a Mount Monkey, Birds and Beasts Lake and a fishpond. A skating rink and a man-made boating lake sit on the park's south mountain, and the grounds are laid out with pavilions, bridges, pebble-paved paths and flower gardens.

The Monument of Martyrs stands on top of the hill, with a Ferris wheel nearby that gives an interesting look over the city, plus an amusement park popular with local families. Entry to the park is free, though the zoo charges. Buses 1, 3, 12, 16, 20, 33 and K1 go there.

6. West Lake Park

West Lake Park is a relaxing stop for quiet boat rides and shady promenades. In summer the West Lake Water Park is the busiest part. The park holds a Lotus Tower featured in poems by the ancient poet Zhou Dunyi and a Taichi square where locals practise Taichi in the morning and dance at night. A bronze bust of the revolutionist Xia Minghan stands at the main entrance, as the park also serves as his memorial.

Come in the early morning for the Taichi, or in the evening for the dancing.

7. Hengyang Museum

Hengyang Museum on Minghan Road in Shigu District holds collections and exhibitions on the history, archaeology and cultural heritage of Hengyang. It is a compact, focused stop that gives context to the reconstructed sites elsewhere in the city.

It opens Tuesday to Sunday, with a break in the middle of the day, and last admission is half an hour before closing; it is closed on Mondays. Pair it with Shigu Academy, which is in the same district.

8. Xiangjiang River Scenic Belt

The Xiangjiang River Scenic Belt follows the river that Hengyang straddles, and the sources list it among the city's landmarks. It is a straightforward place to walk and take in the water and the skyline.

It works well as an unhurried link between other stops rather than a destination in itself.

9. Ming Qing Street

Ming Qing Street is named among Hengyang's landmarks. It is a short, easy addition to a walk through the centre of the city.

Combine it with the Xiangjiang River Scenic Belt, since both are central and suit the same stretch of an afternoon.

10. Jiangkou Bird Island

Jiangkou Bird Island lies near Jiangkou Town in Hengnan County. Rare bird species including white cranes and white egrets live on the island, and the warm climate and natural scenery are further draws.

This is an excursion out of the city, so set aside time for the journey and treat it as a half day at least.

11. Leiyang Shennong Hot Springs

Leiyang Shennong Hot Springs is described as the largest hot springs in Hunan. It is a rest day rather than a sightseeing day.

It sits outside the city, so plan it as a separate outing from the central landmarks.

12. Jiulong Valley Water Rafting

Jiulong Valley means Nine Dragons Valley, and the rafting route here is described as one of the most exciting in China. It is a seasonal activity, best matched to the warmer months.

Like the hot springs, it is an out-of-town excursion and needs its own slot in your plans.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at Huiyan Peak, climbing through the stone torii gate and the hundred step scaling ladder to Yanfeng Temple, then look down over the Misty Rain Pond. Continue to Yueping Park in the same southern part of the city, where you can see the Monument of Martyrs and the City Museum collections.

Afternoon: Cross to Shigu District for Shigu Academy on Shigu Mountain, then visit the Hengyang Museum on Minghan Road nearby. If time allows, walk the Xiangjiang River Scenic Belt and Ming Qing Street in the centre.

Evening: Finish at West Lake Park, where locals practise Taichi in the morning and dance at night, and where the Lotus Tower and the bronze bust of Xia Minghan stand among the promenades.
