Things to Do in Hengshui: Slow Days by Hengshui Lake and Old Bridge

Hengshui, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on the old bridge in the older part of the city and you are looking at one of the few surviving remnants of the town that stood here before the modern streets grew around it. A short ride north, the reed beds and open water of Hengshui Lake begin almost at the city's edge, which is why many travellers treat Hengshui as a place to slow down rather than to tick off sights.

The city suits visitors interested in Han-era history, wetland birdlife, and a craft tradition that is practised at a very small scale: inside painting on snuff bottles. It also suits anyone passing through on the Beijing–Kowloon railway who wants a quieter stop between larger cities.

1. Hengshui Lake

Hengshui Lake is a national nature reserve with inland freshwater wetland ecosystems, and its protection targets include national Class I and II birds. It lies adjacent to Hengshui City to the north and Jizhou City to the south, so it is easy to reach from the urban area.

Come for the wetland scenery and the birdlife rather than for a formal circuit of sights. Because the lake is the anchor of the northern edge of the city, it pairs naturally with Luli Ancient Town, which sits on its bank.

2. Luli Ancient Town

Luli Ancient Town is built on the bank of Hengshui Lake, on the east side of National Highway 106 in Weitun Town, Binhu New District. It is laid out with Han culture as its theme and relies on the wetland scenery of the lake around it.

Treat it as a half-day stop combined with the lake itself, since the two sit together and the town's character comes largely from its setting on the water.

3. Inside painting and the snuff bottle craft

Hengshui is known as a centre for inside painting, mainly of small snuff bottles. Zhang Rucai, born in Hebei Province, began learning the art in 1972 and was conferred the title Master of Chinese Folk Arts & Crafts by UNESCO in April 1996.

The city has a museum and exhibition of the art of the inside painter, showing complex paintings done on the inside of small snuff bottles as well as special larger pieces of glassware. This is the craft most closely associated with Hengshui, so give it real time rather than a quick look.

4. Hengshuisi

Hengshuisi is one of the named temples in the city, open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Its stated hours make it straightforward to fit into a morning or an early afternoon. Check the hours again before you go, as they may change.

5. Zhulin Temple

Zhulin Temple is another of the city's temples and is listed among the places to see in Hengshui.

Pair it with Hengshuisi if you are working through the city's religious sites in one stretch, and allow unhurried time at each.

6. The Buddhist temple on the outskirts and the old bridge

There is a Buddhist temple on the outskirts of the city, and a bridge in the old part of the city that is one of the few remnants of the old town.

The bridge is the more distinctive of the two because so little of the old town survives. Go for the bridge as a marker of what Hengshui used to be, and treat the temple as a separate, quieter stop outside the centre.

7. Jingxian Fengshi Tombs and the Relic Pagoda

These are two of the city's national-level cultural relics protection units, both in Jing County.

They are the strongest choices if Han-era history is your reason for coming. Because they sit together in Jing County, plan them as one outing rather than two separate trips.

8. Houzhong Han Tomb, Shuangzhong Han Tomb and Xiyuantou Han Tomb

These three Han tombs are in Jizhou. They are among the city's protected relics and are best understood as a group.

Combine them with the Jizhou side of Hengshui Lake, since the lake's southern edge reaches Jizhou City.

9. Qinglin Temple Pagoda

The Qinglin Temple Pagoda stands in the old city and is one of the protected relics in the area.

It fits neatly with the old bridge, as both belong to the older part of the city. Visit them in the same stretch of the day.

10. Baoyun Temple Pagoda

The Baoyun Temple Pagoda is in Taocheng District and is among the city's protected relics.

It is a natural addition if you are already spending time in the Taocheng part of the city, which is also where Julu sausage comes from.

11. Harrison International Peace Hospital exhibition room

The Harrison International Peace Hospital is a comprehensive teaching and research hospital named after Dr. Tillson Harrison, a Canadian who died in 1947 while transporting medical equipment and supplies. Some of that equipment is on display in an exhibition room in the hospital.

The hospital uses both traditional Chinese medicine and modern western diagnostic and therapeutic technology. The exhibition room is the reason to include it in a visit; ask locally about access before you go.

12. Local handicrafts: paintings and calligraphy

Hengshui is known for its traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy, which can be purchased in local art shops.

This is the easiest way to take something home that reflects the city's craft reputation, and it sits well alongside a visit to the inside-painting exhibition.

13. Hengshui Laobaigan Liquor

Hengshui Laobaigan Liquor is a famous local liquor and makes for a distinctive souvenir. It is available at specialty shops and local markets.

Buy it late in the day so you are not carrying bottles around the lake or the tombs.

14. Tea and herbs

Various teas and medicinal herbs are sold in Hengshui's markets, reflecting local health practices and culture.

Market browsing pairs well with a food stop, since the same markets are where you will find local specialities.

15. Julu sausage and Wuyi Kouwan

Julu sausage is a speciality of Julu Village in Heyan Town, Taocheng District. It uses Chinese medicinal materials and is not seasonal, so it is available whenever you visit.

Wuyi Kouwan is a speciality of Wuyi County. The "dunwan" here is not a single dish but a table of steamed bowls, made up of eight local "clean bowls" including Dongpo meat, lean meat, fat meat, elbow meat, rice noodles, mixed meat, and meatballs, with pork ribs forming a bowl and mat. The dishes run fat or lean, meat or vegetarian, and are fat but not greasy.

If you only have one day

Morning. Start at Hengshui Lake, reaching it early while the wetland is at its quietest, and walk or look out over the water with the birdlife in mind. Continue on to Luli Ancient Town on the lake's bank, where the Han-themed layout and the wetland setting make for an easy late morning.

Afternoon. Return to the city and spend the middle of the day on the inside painting and snuff bottle museum and exhibition, then look at traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy in the local art shops. If time allows, add Hengshuisi, which is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Evening. Head for the old part of the city to see the bridge, one of the few remnants of the old town, and the Qinglin Temple Pagoda nearby. Finish with local food: Julu sausage, or a table of Wuyi Kouwan steamed bowls if you can find it, and pick up Hengshui Laobaigan Liquor or teas and herbs from a local market or specialty shop on the way back.

When is the best time of year to visit Hengshui?

Hengshui has a cold semi-arid climate with hot, humid summers driven by the East Asian Monsoon and very cold, mostly dry winters. More than three quarters of the annual precipitation falls in the summer half of the year, and snowfall is not common in winter, though it occurs almost every year in small amounts. Relative humidity is highest in summer and lowest in spring.

What should I buy as a souvenir?

Inside-painted snuff bottles and larger inside-painted glassware are the craft most associated with the city, and traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy can be bought in local art shops. Hengshui Laobaigan Liquor is available at specialty shops and local markets, and teas and medicinal herbs are sold in the city's markets.

What local food should I try?

Julu sausage, a speciality of Julu Village in Heyan Town, Taocheng District, which uses Chinese medicinal materials and is not seasonal, and Wuyi Kouwan from Wuyi County, a table of eight steamed bowls that is fat but not greasy.

Decide whether your day belongs to the wetland or to the Han tombs, check the current hours for Hengshuisi before you set out, and start planning your trip to Hengshui around that choice.
