Things to Do in Sanmenxia

Sanmenxia, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on the south bank of the Yellow River where it cuts through the Loess Plateau and you are standing in the gorge that gave Sanmenxia its name — "The Gorge of Three Gateways," after the two islands that split the river into three channels. The city spreads along the water at the point where Henan, Shanxi and Shaanxi meet, with mountains rising on three sides.

Sanmenxia suits travellers working a west Henan route who want archaeology, a working stretch of the Yellow River and a winter wildlife spectacle without a large tourist crowd. The sights are spread across the Hubin and Shanzhou districts and out to Lingbao and Mianchi, so plan on buses, taxis and at least one train ride.

This guide covers the museums, historic pass, dam, wetland park and cave dwellings that the sources document, with the practical details you need to string them into a day or two.

Top things to do in Sanmenxia

1. Guo State Museum

This is the largest comprehensive museum devoted to the state of Guo, a vassal state of the Zhou Dynasty, and the strongest single stop in the city. The collection is extensive, and the highlights are the artefacts unearthed from the royal tombs, including an actual burial pit holding the remains of dozens of horses and chariots.

It sits on Liufeng North Road in Hubin District. Take bus no. 208 to Yellow River Park or bus no. 6 to the Guo State Museum stop. It opens 09:00–16:00, with no entry after 16:30, and admission is ¥40.

2. Sanmenxia Museum

The city museum stands in the centre of Shanzhou Park on Taiyang Road in Hubin District, which makes it easy to combine with a walk in the park itself. It is free, so it works well as a low-cost anchor for a morning.

Take bus no. 1, 2 or 17 and get off at the stop named Scenic Area on the eastern side of the park; buses no. 1 and 2 can be caught from Sanmenxia Railway Station. Opening hours are 09:00–17:00 with no entry after 16:30, and it is closed on Mondays.

3. Shanzhou Silo-Cave

These are the troglodyte houses of Shanzhou, underground dwellings cut into the loess. The form is an old one — the Book of Rites records that people lived in caves in winter and cypress nests in summer — and the silo-caves here show how cave dwelling developed on the Loess Plateau, shaped by climate and terrain.

They are at Beiying Village in Zhangbian Township, Shanzhou District, and you can take the Dikanyuan tourist bus from Sanmenxia Railway Station and South Station. Hours are 08:30–18:30 and admission is ¥60.

4. Swan Lake Wetland Park

Swan Lake, also called Qinglong Lake, lies west of National Highway 209 and east of Qinglong Dam in Shanzhou District. Every October, tens of thousands of white swans arrive from Siberia to live and overwinter on the water, flying, swimming and feeding across the lake through the cold months.

The park is open around the clock and entry is free, so timing your visit to the swan season is the whole point. Reach it by taxi, or by bus no. 23 or Yingbin no. 1 to the Development Zone and then transfer to bus no. 101 to Swan Lake Tourist Resort.

5. Hangu Pass

This was the historic pass guarding the Qin state in the Wei valley to the west against the states to the east — important enough that during the Warring States period the North China Plain was known as "East of the Gate." Be aware that today's gate structure was built after 1992 and is of questionable authenticity, so come for the setting and the history rather than the fabric.

It is at Wangduo Village in Hanguguan Town, Lingbao. Catch a train to Lingbao (not Lingbao West), then transfer to bus no. 8 and ride to the final stop. Hours are 08:00–18:30 in summer and 08:00–17:30 otherwise, and admission is ¥80.

6. Sanmenxia Dam

The dam is the reason the ancient passes in this stretch of the gorge were flooded, and archaeologists studied them intensively before they went under. Seeing the structure itself gives context to everything else you will read about the river here.

It is about 14 km northeast of the city, on Wangda Road in Hubin District; buses to the dam reportedly leave from the northeast corner of the intersection of Liufeng North Road and Jianshe Road. It is open 08:00–17:00 and admission is ¥30.

7. Yangshaoxianmen Mountain Scenic Area

This is a wine culture and tourism area built around Yangshao culture and Yangshao wine brewing, with mountains, dense forest and unusual geology across the grounds. The Cuiping Valley and Taoming Valley scenic groups within the park are both national scenic groups.

It is in Mianchi County, reached via Lianhuo Expressway, Shaozhou Road, G241 National Highway and Yuanmian Expressway, with Yangshao Station and Xianmenshan Station along the way. It opens 08:00–17:30 with no admission after 17:30, and admission is ¥40.

8. Lingbao Fudi Mountain

Fudi Mountain in Lingbao is known for its Taoist temples and its natural surroundings, with scenic hikes and a quiet atmosphere for anyone interested in both nature and old religious sites. It pairs naturally with a Lingbao trip that includes Hangu Pass.

Bring what you need for a hike, since the appeal here is the walking and the setting rather than a single building.

9. Sanmenxia Sports Center

The sports centre is a large facility offering swimming, tennis and fitness, and it is a straightforward place to get some exercise or use modern amenities between sightseeing days.

It works best as a wet-weather or rest-day option rather than a headline stop.

If you only have one day

Morning: Start at the Guo State Museum on Liufeng North Road, arriving close to opening so you have time for the royal tomb artefacts and the horse-and-chariot burial pit. Follow it with the Sanmenxia Museum in Shanzhou Park, which is free and a short bus ride away — remember it is closed on Mondays.

Afternoon: Head to Shanzhou Silo-Cave at Beiying Village to see the underground loess dwellings, then continue to Swan Lake Wetland Park. If you are travelling between October and the winter months, the swans will be on the water; the park stays open around the clock and costs nothing to enter.

Evening: Finish at Sanmenxia Dam on Wangda Road, which is open until 17:00, to see the river crossing that reshaped this stretch of the gorge and submerged the old passes.
