Things to Do in Jiamusi: Ice, Wetlands and Kites

Jiamusi, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Stand on Binjiang Road on a winter evening and the Songhua River is a sheet of grey ice, while the fountains on Zhongshan Street throw coloured light into the dark. Jiamusi is a river port city in eastern Heilongjiang, and its pleasures are seasonal and outdoor: ice and snow in the long winter, wetlands and kite-filled skies once the ground thaws.

It suits travellers who are already in Heilongjiang and want a stop that is not built around a single monument, and who are happy to plan around the weather. Winters are bitter and dry, summers humid and very warm, and most of the year's rain falls from June to August.

This guide covers the sights and activities the sources describe, with practical notes on timing and what to pair with what.

Top things to do in Jiamusi

1. Jiamusi Ice and Snow World

A large winter scenic area along Binjiang Road, built around ice lantern art, ice sculpture, skiing and other winter entertainment. It is the city's main cold-season draw and the easiest way to see northern ice culture without leaving the urban area.

Go between December and February, when temperatures are workable and the ice events are running; it opens 09:00-18:00 daily in winter, from ¥50 per person. Pair it with a walk along Binjiang Road, which also leads to the kite-flying grounds in spring.

2. Wofoshan Skiing Resort

A ski resort at Zhongda Village in Dalai Town, in the suburbs, with snow tracks and facilities pitched at all levels. The surrounding scenery is part of the appeal, so it works as a full day out rather than a quick stop.

It operates 08:30-17:30 daily in winter, with prices around 100-200. Check conditions before committing, and treat it as an alternative to, not an addition to, the same day as Ice and Snow World.

3. Sanjiangkou Wetland Park

A wetland reserve in the Sanjiangkou suburb, at the meeting of the rivers, with dense vegetation and a lot of bird life. It is the best option here for nature lovers, photographers and anyone wanting to walk rather than ride.

Open 08:00-18:00 daily and free to enter. The migratory season is the reason to come; you can stroll the paths or charter a boat to see the wetland from the water. Buses run from the city, or drive, and there is parking near the park.

4. Jiamusi Music Fountain Square

The civic square on Zhongshan Street in Qianjin District, where fountains and light are choreographed to music each evening. It is where locals gather at night, and it gives you the city's cultural atmosphere rather than a formal sight.

Performances run 18:00-22:00 daily and are free, with themed shows around festivals and special events. Take public transport to Citizen Square Station or walk in from Zhongshan Street; it combines naturally with an evening on Binjiang Road.

5. Jiamusi Kite Flying Activity

Every spring, Riverside Park on Binjiang Road fills with kites, from traditional Chinese designs to modern creative ones. It is a traditional local spring pastime and free to join or watch.

It runs on weekends and holidays in spring, 10:00-16:00, and the kites fly highest when the weather cooperates. Reach Jiangbian Park by public transport or on foot, and parking is straightforward.

6. Honghe Nature Reserve

A reserve of more than 16,000 hectares, noted for its variety of marsh plants, migratory birds, waterfowl and other wildlife. It is the strongest choice for serious birdwatching in the region.

Come in the migratory season for the best chance of sightings, and bring binoculars. It sits outside the city, so plan it as a dedicated trip rather than a stop between other sights.

7. Sanjiang Nature Reserve

A wetland protection area on the Sanjiang plain, the low, flat land formed by the alluvium of the Amur, Songhua and Ussuri rivers. Expect open water, marsh and birdlife rather than facilities.

Combine it with Sanjiangkou Wetland Park if you are already heading out of the city for the day, and allow for the weather, since the plain offers little shelter.

8. Jiamusi Zoo

The city zoo, with animals and rides aimed at children. It is a low-key option rather than a headline attraction.

It works best as a filler on a day when weather rules out the wetlands or the ski slopes, and is easiest to visit with children in tow.

9. Jiamusi Port

The port on the lower reaches of the Songhua River, first built in 1919 and expanded in 1937 into a steel-structured port. It is the city's link to the river and, by extension, to the trade routes that made Jiamusi a transport and communications centre.

Passenger ships sail from mid-April until the beginning of November, upriver to Qiqihar and Harbin or downriver to Tongjiang and Khabarovsk in Russia. If you want to travel onward by water, check sailings against your dates before building a plan around them.

10. Fuyuan Port

A port site in the prefecture, listed among the places to see. It is a straightforward stop for anyone interested in the river crossings and border traffic of eastern Heilongjiang.

Treat it as part of a longer run east rather than a city sight, and confirm access before travelling.

11. Jinjiekou

A named locality within the prefecture, listed among the places to see. It is worth including if you are already exploring beyond the urban area.

It pairs with the other out-of-town sites on this list rather than with a city day.

12. Wusu

A named locality within the prefecture, listed among the places to see. Like Jinjiekou, it is a stop for travellers covering more ground than the city itself.

Fold it into an itinerary that already takes you out to the wetlands or the ports, and check transport in advance.

If you only have one day

Morning: Head out early to Sanjiangkou Wetland Park, which opens at 08:00 and is free, and spend the morning on the paths or on a chartered boat looking for birds.

Afternoon: Return to the city and visit Jiamusi Zoo, or, if it is winter and you have the time and budget, travel out to Wofoshan Skiing Resort for the afternoon session.

Evening: Walk Binjiang Road, then settle in at Jiamusi Music Fountain Square on Zhongshan Street for the 18:00-22:00 fountain and light show, which is free. In winter, swap the square for Jiamusi Ice and Snow World before it closes at 18:00.
