5. The China Xiamen Machinery and Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE)
Also called the Straits Fair, the CXMEE is run as a joint venture with a Taiwanese organisation and is held downtown on Hubin Bei Lu in the spring. It is one of the city's influential trade shows.
Because it is downtown rather than at the XICEC, it is easy to combine with a walk around the Siming District core.
6. The Xiamen Buddhist Fair
The biannual Xiamen Buddhist Fair is held in spring and autumn. It is generally open to the public, though it is oriented towards industry professionals.
If you are in the city in either season, check the dates; it is a reasonable stop for travellers with an interest in the subject, but not a general sightseeing draw.
7. Water Garden Expo Park
A large Water Garden Expo Park was built in Jimei to host the China International Garden and Flower Exposition when Xiamen held it in 2007. The exposition moves to a different city each year, so the park is what remains in Xiamen from that event.
It sits in Jimei, on the mainland side of the city, so plan it as a separate outing rather than something to fold into a walk around Siming District.
8. The old port area and Xiamen Port
Xiamen Island possesses a major international seaport, and the Port of Xiamen is a well-developed first-class trunk line port in the Asia-Pacific region. The urban core grew up from the port on southern Xiamen Island, so the waterfront is where the city's history as a trading centre is easiest to read.
Walk the Siming District waterfront rather than trying to tour the working port itself, and combine it with Yundang Lake, which is nearby.

Morning: Start at Yundang Lake in Siming District, walking the lakeside paths while the city is still cool. The lake sits on the old Yundang Bay inlet, and the municipal government buildings on the reclaimed land beside it give you a sense of how the modern city was built out over the water.
