Stand on the restored deck of Anping Bridge and the stone spans run out ahead of you in a long, low line, with the water moving underneath and the old coastal road running alongside. That crossing between Anhai Town and the neighbouring Shuitou Town is as good a first hour in Jinjiang as any.
Jinjiang suits travellers who are in the Quanzhou area for a day or two and would rather spend it on temples, old streets and a very old bridge than on a checklist of sights. It rewards slow walking and a willingness to eat where the crowds are.
This guide covers the places worth your time in the city, with a one-day plan that strings them together and answers to the practical questions that come up before you go.
Top things to do in Jinjiang
1. Anping Bridge
Anping Bridge runs between Jinjiang's Anhai Town and the neighbouring Shuitou Town, and it is one of the ancient bridges on the old coastal road. It has been well restored, so you can walk the full crossing rather than admire it from the bank.
It is free to walk. Combine it with Sanli Street, which sits just east of the Anpingqiao Scenic Spot and is reachable on bus no. 3.
2. Cao'an Temple
Cao'an Temple is on Huabiao Mountain in Jinjiang and is the world's only surviving Manichean temple. That alone makes it the stop most worth building a day around.
Set aside time for the mountain setting as well as the building itself, and pair the visit with the rest of your old-town wandering rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
3. Wudianshi Traditional Street Blocks
Wudianshi Traditional Street Blocks, on Meiyuan Road in Meiling Subdistrict, are the heart of old Jinjiang, with many well-preserved historical buildings. Entry to the general area is free and it is open all day.
Bus routes 4, 6, 7, 11, 17, 18, 22, 35 and 45 serve the area. Come in the late afternoon so you can walk the blocks in daylight and stay on as the light goes.
4. Longshan Temple
Longshan Temple is on Hai Bazhong Road in Jinjiang and charges no admission. It is a working temple rather than a monument, so the visit is about watching how the space is used as much as about the architecture.
Go earlier in the day if you want quieter conditions, and check the temple fair calendar before you fix your dates.
5. Sanli Street
Sanli Street sits east of the Anpingqiao Scenic Spot and is free to walk. It works best as a companion to the bridge rather than a destination on its own.
Bus no. 3 gets you there. Walk the bridge first, then come here.
6. Jinjiang Museum
Jinjiang Museum is at 382 Shiji Avenue and is free to enter. It is the place to go when you want context for the temples, bridges and old streets you have been walking through.
Opening hours are 09:00-11:30 and 14:30-17:00 from October to May, and 09:00-11:30 and 15:00-17:30 from June to September. It is closed on Mondays. Bus routes K902, 3, 9, 16, 29, 31, 33, 35 and 45 stop nearby.
7. Jinjiang Temple Fair
Jinjiang's temple fairs are part of the local cultural heritage and are held especially around major festivals such as the Lantern Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. They combine religious offerings, traditional performances and festive activities.
Expect dragon and lion dances, puppet shows and folk operas, and locals paying homage to their deities and praying for blessings. Plan your trip around one of the festival dates if this is the part of Jinjiang you most want to see.
8. Jinjiang Lotus Festival
The Lotus Festival takes place every summer and highlights blooming lotus flowers in scenic areas such as Longshan Park and the surrounding wetlands. It includes guided lotus-viewing tours, cultural performances and photography contests.
There are also painting workshops inspired by the lotus, and local delicacies made with lotus seeds and roots. It is a calm way to spend a summer day, so build it into a summer itinerary rather than a winter one.
9. Jinjiang Southern Fujian Culture Festival
The Southern Fujian Culture Festival celebrates the region's Minnan heritage with traditional music, dance and handicrafts. Events include Nanyin music performances, martial arts displays and showcases of traditional Minnan architecture.
Come hungry: local foods such as peanut soup and oyster omelets are part of the programme. It is the best single stop for understanding the culture behind the buildings.
If you only have one day
Morning. Start at Anping Bridge and walk the crossing between Anhai Town and Shuitou Town while it is still cool. Follow it with Sanli Street, just east of the Anpingqiao Scenic Spot and reachable on bus no. 3.
Afternoon. Head to Wudianshi Traditional Street Blocks on Meiyuan Road in Meiling Subdistrict, which is open all day and free to enter, and give the preserved buildings a proper couple of hours. If you have time left, add Longshan Temple on Hai Bazhong Road, or Jinjiang Museum on Shiji Avenue if it is not a Monday and you are inside its opening hours.
Evening. Return to Wudianshi Traditional Street Blocks as the light goes, then eat nearby. If your visit falls during the Lantern Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival or one of the summer lotus events, let the temple fair or festival programme take over the evening instead.
