Yanji is not a sightseeing destination in the conventional sense: there is no outstanding architecture apart from a few relatively new Russian-style buildings, and no stunning scenery in the immediate surroundings. What it offers instead is a non-touristy place to wander, indulge and get lost in.

1. Head Mountain (帽儿山)

From the tiger statue you start on a boardwalk through the forest and then climb well over 1000 steps to a lookout tower, with plains and rice fields spread out beyond the city.
The carpark and forest are busy at weekends, but few people go all the way to the top, so the summit stays calm. Go on a fine day, since the view is the point, and note that this is not the mountain of the same name in Heilongjiang Province.
2. Korean Folk Customs Park of China (中国朝鲜族民俗园)
A re-creation of a traditional Korean village on Yannan Road, with shops, restaurants and cultural displays, plus a sports and performance area where you can watch ethnic performances and take part. It is free to enter and open from 09:00 to 21:00.
Bus nos. 1, 16, 21, 32, 41, 43 and 46 stop nearby. Pair it with a walk along the Yanji River afterwards, since the park sits within easy reach of the centre.
3. Yanbian Museum (延边博物馆)
A large museum on Changbai West Road devoted to the history and culture of the Korean ethnic minority in China and of Yanbian Prefecture, with more than 10,000 exhibits including 11 first-level artifacts. Labels and explanations are bilingual in Korean and Chinese.
Entry is free. It is closed on Mondays, and hours are 09:00 to 16:30 in summer and 09:00 to 16:00 in winter, so arrive with time to spare. Bus no. 28 stops directly in front and can be caught from Yanji Railway Station.
4. Yanji People's Park (延吉人民公园)
A historic public park in central Yanji near the Yanji River and close to Yanbian University, with flower areas, walking and jogging routes, and sports facilities including football, basketball and table tennis courts. It is free and open around the clock, and it is a good place to watch everyday life in the city.
Come in the early morning or towards evening, when local residents use it for exercise and leisure, and combine it with a wander through the streets around the university.
5. Yanji Dinosaur Museum (延吉恐龙博物馆)
Opened in 2021 as the first dinosaur museum in Jilin Province, this museum on Longxiang Street displays the dinosaur fossils accidentally uncovered by construction workers in Yanji in 2016. Tickets cost ¥50 and can be bought at the ticket office in the visitor centre or online through the museum's official WeChat account.
Hours are 09:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:00, with no entry after 11:00 in the morning or after 15:30 in the afternoon, so plan around the midday closure. The Dinosaur Museum–Mengdumei tourist bus departs from the Mengdumei Ski Resort at 08:05, 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:20 and 17:25.
6. Yanji Dinosaur Kingdom (延吉恐龙王国)
A dinosaur theme park just south of the Yanji Dinosaur Museum on Longxiang Street, open since July 2022, so the facilities are new and some were not fully completed at the time of writing. It is open 09:00 to 21:00 with no entry after 19:30; tickets are ¥198 for adults and ¥138 for children for the amusement park, ¥138 for adults and ¥98 for children for the water park, and ¥60 for the performing arts theatre.
If you read Chinese you can buy tickets through the park's WeChat account. Because it sits beside the museum, the two make a natural half-day together.
7. Ma'ershan National Forest Park
A spot for hiking and natural scenery, known for dense forests and rich vegetation, with scenic trails and fresh air. It suits climbing and a quiet walk rather than a checklist of sights.
Bring suitable footwear for the trails and allow time to enjoy the surroundings rather than rushing through.
8. Mengdumei Ski Resort (梦都美滑雪场)
A winter sports destination at Chunxing Village in Yilan Town, operating from November 27 to March 6, with slopes of different difficulty levels and facilities including rental equipment, dining services and ski instructors.
Wear appropriate skiing gear including ski clothing, helmets and goggles, and warm up thoroughly before skiing. Beginners should take lessons or go with an instructor, follow the resort's safety rules, avoid speeding, and keep a safe distance from other skiers.
9. Longtou Mountain (龙头山)
A 40-minute drive from the city, near the village of Longmei, Longtou Mountain houses royal tombs of the ancient Balhae kingdom, which existed between 698 and 926 AD. It is one for history and archaeology buffs rather than casual strollers.
Because it lies outside the city, treat it as a dedicated trip and combine it with nothing else in this list on the same afternoon.
10. The small amusement park by the Yanxi Street bridge
If you spend a couple of nights in the city, the small amusement park right next to the bridge on Yanxi Street is worth an hour: a dozen small rides and plenty of beer stalls.
It works best as an evening stop, when the stalls are busy, rather than as a daytime destination.
