Stand on Xijindu Ancient Street where the stone steps run down toward the old ferry crossing, and the layers of restoration sit openly beside preserved medieval buildings. That mixture — a working city with a long river history and a handful of genuinely old corners — is what a visit to Zhenjiang feels like.
The city suits travellers who are already in the lower Yangtze region and want a day or two of parks, temples and museums without the crowds of larger neighbours. It rewards an interest in Chinese legend, Buddhist and Taoist architecture, and the local vinegar that gives the place much of its identity.
This guide covers the parks, the ancient street, the temples and the museums worth your time, followed by a one-day plan and answers to common questions.
Top things to do in Zhenjiang
1. Jinshan Park
Jinshan Park sits on the northwest side of Zhenjiang and contains a Buddhist monastery and a large pagoda. It is known for the arrangement described as a "mountain encompassed by monasteries", and it is the setting of the legend and novel "Tale of the White Snake", in which the heroine floods the site after the abbot imprisons her husband.
The temple complex and a large lake make up most of the park, and paddle boats and electric boats are available to rent if you want to get out on the water. Note that the pagoda charges a separate small fee of about ¥10 if you wish to climb it.
2. Xijindu Ancient Street
Xijindu Ancient Street lies at the foothills of Yuntai Mountain in Jingkou District and was an ancient ferry crossing. Contemporary restoration has been extensive, giving it a deliberately "ancient" feel, but there are interesting preserved medieval buildings along with shops and restaurants aimed at visitors.
It is the most convenient sight to combine with a wander through the modern city, and Bus #2 from DaShiKou downtown, in front of Pizza Hut, will get you there.
3. Beigushan Park
Beigushan Park is on the north side of Zhenjiang, near the Yangtze River, and was a legendary stronghold in ancient times. During the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Bei and Sun Quan are said to have taken a horse ride here together to discuss forming an alliance.
The park is surrounded by good landscaping and the river, and its paths are lit with lanterns after sundown, which makes it a reasonable choice for an evening walk.
4. Jiaoshan Park
Jiaoshan Park is on a small island with a mountain on it in the Yangtze River. It is known for the reverse arrangement to Jinshan — "monasteries encompassed by mountains" — and includes Dinghui Temple, a large pagoda, a peacock farm and many winding paths through dense foliage.
The island is connected to the history of local resistance to a British invasion in the 19th century, and some iron cannons from the historical fortifications can still be found there. It is a good choice if you want to get away from people, as it is nearly empty most of the time.
5. Nanshan Park
Nanshan Park is on the south side of Zhenjiang and includes a hill with various paths snaking up and down it. A large pagoda at the top offers views of the city, the river and the surrounding countryside, and the climb is easy and takes less than an hour.
Many people barbecue at small pits next to a lake to the east of the park entrance, so it works well as a relaxed half-day rather than a formal sight.
6. Zhenjiang Museum
Zhenjiang Museum is on Boxian Road and is free to enter. It is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00.
You can reach it on bus no. 2, 12 or 102, which makes it easy to pair with a walk along Xijindu Ancient Street in the same part of the city.
7. China Vinegar Culture Museum
The China Vinegar Culture Museum on Guangyuan Road in the New City area of Dandu District is dedicated to the history of Chinese vinegar culture. It is a fitting stop in a city best known for Chinkiang vinegar, the fragrant black vinegar that is a staple of Chinese cooking.
It is open from 09:00 to 16:00 and offers free indoor WiFi. Bus No. 633, 70 or 131 will get you there.
8. Zhulin Temple
Zhulin Temple, also called the "Bamboo Forest Temple", sits in a valley between two mountains near Zhaoyin Mountain, which is also known as Bamboo Hill because of the profusion of mountain bamboo. The temple takes its name from the bamboo forest surrounding it, and from a distance it cannot be seen among the bamboo.
It is a quieter stop than the major parks and suits a slow walk rather than a checklist visit.
9. Maoshan Mountain
Maoshan Mountain is 26 km southeast of Jurong City in Zhenjiang and stands at an altitude of 372 metres. The climb takes approximately one hour. It is both a Taoist holy site and one of the bases used during the Anti-Japanese War.
It is open from 07:30 to 17:00, and you can reach it by departing from Jurong Bus Terminal. Because it sits well outside the city, treat it as a separate trip rather than part of a day in town.
If you only have one day
Morning: Start at Jinshan Park on the northwest side of the city, where the Buddhist monastery and the lake take up most of the grounds. If you want to be on the water, rent a paddle boat or an electric boat, and pay the small extra fee if you want to climb the pagoda.
Afternoon: Move on to Xijindu Ancient Street at the foothills of Yuntai Mountain, then walk to Zhenjiang Museum on Boxian Road, which is free and open until 17:00 on all days except Monday. Both are served by bus no. 2.
Evening: Finish at Beigushan Park on the north side of the city, where the paths are lit with lanterns after sundown and the Yangtze River and landscaping frame the walk.
